I do think these ladies are using too much gel for sleeker styles nowadays. Some of this can be achieved by wetting the brush, a little shea butter, grease (or even less gel), and a scarf. I'm old school. A wet brush and hair grease was all we needed; and I still use it to this day.

If you have good nourished hair, your pretty edges will lay pretty independently. I don't touch mines. And they always lay beautifully as need.
