I own the Specialized Creo SL Comp Carbon. It's a programmable electric assist bike without a throttle and without any resistance when not peddling or when the motor isn't assisting. With its weight at around 28 lbs. and its geometry its feel and response is amazing. Without the Range Extender (an extra battery that looks like a water bottle) I have no trouble going 45-50 miles with a 1800 foot elevation gain (I'm 200 lbs). The Range Extender adds another 25 mile range. I mix Eco and Sport (for the hills).

2500 watts (BBSHD 1000 watts , 52 volts and 21 amp hour) with a 5 speed IGH does the trick... the Bafang BBSHD or the 620 Ultra Mid-drive work great. Using the gates belt drive eliminates the lag you will find with the chain drive. 21 AH at 52 volts eliminates range anxiety. Good video, thank you!

    Ok, informative content.
Ironically, most on youtube video of electric bike world is very seldom the topic about uphill test, stupid ebike builder is only test their DIY damn ebike on the flat/ level road, never they try on the hill.
Also ironically very seldom they make the topic about self charging ebike with portable generator, i think most of them is only use market ebike with REGEN hub motor & controller ( regenerative brake only = not constant continues charging). So i plan to build my prototype DIY ebike with unlimited range with no charging, no fuel. I always been thinking and design of building my prototype ebike with range extender generator ( 1. pedal generator, and also 2. Gasoline 25cc 2 stroke 3 hp lightweight 1 kg RC engine : to drive dc dynamo 2 kw generator )

This is very helpful. I have to do lots of tough hills in order to ride anywhere, which is why in my mid 60s, I am not cycling much. So HILLS are my need. However, I DO want to pedal. I want to be able to ride without any pedal assist on the flats. Also I'd like to be able to lift / manage the bike with so ease. So, I think I want 500 watt mid drive, correct. I don't think I need the throttle, although that might automatically come with this? Do you send you bikes to local stores?

Rcently I bought a idotata from ebay with taxes claiming to be able to climb a 30% grade. The ad said 500 watt, 12.8 AH, 36 volt battery, claims to be able to go 30 km with pedaling. I found it performed no better than my old bike with the amazon 250 watt conversion kit with 24 volt 13 AH battery while climbing North Taylor hill in BC Canada on a 6% grade. Both bikes will not move up the hill on their own without pedaling. After pedaling 20 km on level 3 mode my battery was dead by the time I returned home from this ride. I also had a pedal that was feeling weird and noticed pedal sitting at angle and threads in right crank arm chewed out. I have reason to believe this Chinese ebike is over rated in ad, may only be a 250 watt motor being advertised as a 500 watt and the 12.8 AH battery seems to be over rated as well, likely a 8AH battery at best. On a positive note this bike will move me along at 32kmh max but only after unlocking speed control which was set at 21 kmh. This bike is a 21 speed which seems to be very necessary with all the over rated electrics. The bike cost me $1005 cdn with all taxes and free shipping. I was almost satisfied until I seen how poorly bike performed climbing a hill. I just wanted to share my experience with buying off internet that some things aren't what they claim, so beware.

I am in an area with around 30% to 40% incline( how to calculate it other than eyeballing?) It looks 30 degree to 40 degree. Its just a small climb around 600 m or so and I only want to use the bike for this purpose. I only have access to 250 watt bikes, or scooters that dont have pedal( perk is I can fold them up and charge them somewhere in office).
But I fear scooters will fail to climb.
Will 250 watt be okay? I dont mind pedalling a bit or even strain a bit, as it is such a small distance. I am 90KGs and I will have a 10 kg or so backpack with me.(can be lighter). Please help.

Great video - so I am 134lbs, but I have a 2 mile mild hill (20 degrees) and a short 1/2 mile 45 degree hill. What bike (not features, but brand and model) would you recommend? I don’t want to spend too much (since I had bike stolen in the past) My commute is about 6 miles each way( uphills on the way to the train station - on local public roads).
I assume we are looking at mid-drive with 500W? I would like to have the option to easily remove the battery. If foldable is possible and easy to place in the train ride (even better, I could avoid stealing). I need to carry it 2 stories up while trying to catch and switch trains)
Do you think something like the Gocycle could do? It is not a mid-drive, and only has 3 speeds

We cannot recommend it, at least on our bikes as we our bikes are not made to take an extra motor and be able to control it. But if you do have another brand of bike, you may want to check with the manufacturer and see if the's possible.

Keep in mind the range of your bike. You don’t want to travel to far and run out of juice. because you will be struggling to make it back. Climbing hills WILL drastically reduce your range. If your bike is rated at 75 miles per charge and you take on a hilly ride it can be reduced to say 15-20 mile range before having to recharge. Don’t get stuck.

250 W and the term hill do not go together, slopes yes but not hills which are defines as having an elevation above 200 m. I live on such a hill on a Mediterranean island and the roads leading to our village have slopes that vary from a minimum of 27% to 40% and you need a 1000W + mid drive working through a good set of rear cogs and low tooth number crank (28 - 32) to get up them without being very fit. But here we are limited to 250 W so our e bikes are fitted with walking seep setting so you can run after your bike up hills. On our island most of the villages and capital are on similar hills so going from one to another requires a lot of battery power or strong legs. It is not just the watts that matter but the type of motor, whether is is axial or radial where one gives speed and the other torque though some motors combine both.
