Hey, Bill Wurts uploaded a new song, “Where I’ve been” so if you have the time I’d love to see you dig through it. I’ve been listening to it for almost every day for weeks now.
Could you review the Team Fortress 2 soundtrack please?
Hi Charles, I was wondering if you could review to the Spongebob theme song or the soundtracks
I'm still surprised he still didn't react to sonic mania soundtrack
'The Raggy Dolls', 'My Pet Monster', ' SuperTed', 'Fraggle Rock', 'Bananaman', 'Captain Planet', 'Inspector Gadget', 'Power Rangers', 'He-Man', 'Thundercats', 'Silverhawks', 'Bravestar', 'Voltron', 'Centurions', 'M.A.S.K', 'Transformers', 'TMNT', 'Chip 'N Dale Rescue Rangers', 'DuckTales', 'TaleSpin', 'C.O.P.S', 'Count Duckula', 'Madballs', 'Dino Riders', 'The Gummi Bears', 'The Smurfs', 'Winnie The Pooh'
I believe Ziggy Marley -- Bob Marley's son -- sings this theme song! Was always one of my favorite shows as a kid. Had so much unexpected humor, while also taking on some pretty heavy subjects.
Yes he does :)
Oh! That's really cool~
The theme songs from kids shows in the 90s and 2000s were bangers. Postcards from buster anyone? Between the lions?
Between the Lions is a banger, and they had a bunch of other really good songs too.
I loved the Disney cartoon theme intros... Darkwing Duck, New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers... I'd love to see his take on them
Yesss both of those
PBS shows from that era were just the best.
@@secretforreddit The current crop of PBS Kids shows is lowkey jammin with the music they have, believe it or not
As a Caribbean kid, growing up listening to reggae, ska, calypso, soca etc, I loved this theme song. Now, it reminds me of my grandma because I use to watch this at her house a lot
Charles: The Arthur Theme Song Was WAY Cooler Than You Remember
Me, who gets it stuck in my head every other week: I remember ALL TOO WELL
All Too Well is a different song 😉
I'm glad I wasn't the only one that didn't put the two together that the Arthur theme song was not just a reggae song, but one done by a son of Bob Marley, Ziggy Marley when I grew up watching the show. Maybe because the theme song so easily sucked me into the show as the beat dropped harder than the Greek economy. The Caribbean is a region blessed with incredible music from Afro-Cuban jazz to Merengue and reggae. When the wildlife like the Cyclura rock iguanas are as chill as the people, that's when you know the Caribbean is the place to be
I listened to so much Bob Marley as a kid; I'm so happy that these tie together. Feels like fate!
Knew it was Reggae or something like it, did not know the familial connection.
Bruh just VIOLATED the Greeks
The Caribbean is so beautiful.
The fact it was written by a Marley was something I did not catch
@@toriibarlow, well no, it was *performed* by Ziggy Marley, but written by Québecois fusion guitarist/composer Jerry de Villiers Jr. and producer Judy Henderson. (Jerry, btw, is one of the hidden gems of '90s fusion. You can find his own work as a performer on CZcams, but not a whole lot of other places.)
this made me realize that i had such good taste as a kid
Arthur is a fantastic show, I really hope people keep sharing it with their children.
agreed this is goes hard
Especially Mister Rogers Neighborhood. Freeform jazz from the late great Johnny Costa!!!
@@WasatchWind it just ended this year unfortunately
@@ThatWorldWideWeb Really if we're being honest, the best years of the show ended ten years ago.
I love this channel. I still am completely a noob at understanding music, but Charles' energy, enthusiasm, and passion for music is so unapologetically and positively infectious. It brings me joy just to watch him geek out over something he loves!
Me toooooo. I can only play certain songs I practice. No clue about the theory.
You really aren't alone there! We love the enthusiasm!! He's amazing at explaining things too, so even if you're a beginner you can grasp some things!
I know EXACTLY how you feel! Charles is truly a great musician
So ture, same!
This song was a total bop. Not at all very complex, but still very well performed, composed and produced.
Of course it's not complex. It's a simple message from the heart.
As someone who grew up in the black church, it was so fun watching him geek out over chords that I hear every Sunday
Same lol
😭😭
More PBS theme songs please 😊
Fetch! theme song won an Emmy btw, so highly recommend checking that one out.
Wow really?!
Fetch! With Ruff Ruffman is a BANGER and the show was so awesome! I wish more people talked about it!
@@savannahnowicki4453 feel like i was the only one who knew
Oh man, the 90s nostalgia. Somehow my early 2000s 8th-grade class made this our theme song. We’d been together the majority of 8 years and were now looking at splitting up to go to different high schools, and walking around campus singing the “Arthur” theme song together somehow put an affirmative punctuation on our good memories and made the future feel more manageable.
"Arthur theme song is great! Anyway so Chance the Rapper..."
Yeah what was that
i'm jamaican-american and grew up watching pbs. i knew the arthur theme song was reggae and it made me happy to hear it 🥰
This makes me want to hear a full solo piano version of the theme song.
Another problem is growing up TV's don't have bass so lots of subtleties are missed. I've never actually heared the song on my speakers and wow it's great, even though I watched Arthur everyday. Hey Arnold is another one that caught me off.
Oh Hey Arnold had some TUUUNES! Charles did a video on that too! Worth a watch if you've not seen it already!
Yeah, listening with deep headphones, within the first few seconds of hearing the song I was like where has this amazing bassline been my whole childhood?
Oh tvs do have bass. I had a tv where wet always had to turn it of because of the bass
The curious George theme is also a complete bop
Love to hear you break down “bear in the big blue house”, awesome big band/soul pieces.
Yes! had to look it up cause its been a thousand years, that would make a great vid.
I feel so old - we watched Arthur (& Telletubbies, Blues Clues, Big Comfy Couch, etc) with our kids. Loads of great tunes!
Watching Charles Cornell geek over music makes my day!
Everyday!
WOOOO!!!🤣 Can't Help To Do That With Him Cause You Feel It With Him
In the bridge, I hear: F C Dm Bb C, back to F. The “ooh” vocals emphasize that transition to the 6m with the high note changing from a C to a D, an octave above the melody.
This is probably one of my favorite videos from you since I don't really understand the theory. Having you just jamming out and showing another version of the song to show how it can be changed was really cool
Not sure if you check the comments, but, when you’re listening and playing along - in terms of the actual video - is it being done live? How much practice is done between edits in your video? Or is it all purely off the cuff? I’m so blown away with how natural and at ease you look when playing. (Obviously that so years of practice, but still).
Cheers!
This would be fairly simple for any reasonably advanced pianist. I'm only intermediate, and I could probably do this, just not quite as smooth.
I'm not quite as good as Charles, because I don't have as much knowledge of like jazz extensions and stuff, but for the most part I can pick up a stringed instrument and immediately start live playing along with most music. Once you are familiar with your instrument and have a sense for intervals and the common progressions you can just kind of feel where things are going. If the music is too complex I may not be able to get it exactly, but I can at least follow the chord structure or the melody enough to play something that will sound good.
He’ll edit down to get rid of stuff that breaks flow but mostly you’re seeing it at about the speed he’s doing it. This is the difference between learning music properly and just learning individual songs. When you learn music properly you learn scales, modes and intervals which are all really boring but, once you internalise them, they allow you to play by ear.
A lot of the time, especially in shorts, he’ll leave in stupid little mistakes because they’re funny, like flubbing a C major scale
He's so used to it that it's similar to someone typing - when you type you don't think about where your fingers are going, you just know what word you want to type and your fingers do it automatically. (That's why he mentioned that his fingers instinctively wanted to play more complex chords than the ones in the actual song.)
This is pretty niche, but Pajama Sam and other Humongous Entertainment games actually have some pretty neat soundtracks to them. Pajama Sam: No Need to Hide When It's Dark Outside specifically has a lot of bossa nova and jazz fusion scattered throughout.
Charles taking us to CHURCH with this one! JHEEZE! 😍😍 Those gospel tones just kill me every time!
I remember in high school learning about different music styles and when I was looking into reggae I was like, “oh, it’s like the Arthur theme song.”
I think ima just starting asking Charles to check out the main theme from yu-gi-oh. That shit has some low key killer harmony, awesome orchestration, the bass lick is iconic, and the instrumentation sounds so exotic
The master duel music is absolutely amazing. It single handedly got me into classical music
For clarity's sake, you mean the Yu-Gi-Oh! English OP (referred to as Yugioh DM). There's, like, at least twenty more yugioh themes. But yeah, for all the sins the dub has, it's got great music throughout. Kaiba hacking theme is still a personal favorite.
Japanese yu gi oh season 0 theme slaps too, I love that track
Hearing it on piano now makes me wonder if this could make a good wedding song
i think it could
Do Ducktales or Darkwing Duck next. Big band jazz.
Not big band but jazz quartet/quintet but you might like The Consouls’ recent cover of The Moon
@@cooldebt The brass was so tight in Ducktales
Growing in a caribbean household I knew this was reggae off the bat and it felt cool to see my culture represented in a show that I loved!
Thank you….Arthur and Chance SoundCloud era music 😭 love this video
Holy shit man how did I never hear Chance's recording of this before??? At this point I'd even love to hear you do a recording of it using some of the ideas you explored at about 15:12
I play piano for my church and I’ve been doing it for the past 11 years and hearing some else play the keys is just soothing! Love your videos Charles! 🙌🏾
8:50 the 2 with the F on top is such a bittersweet sound :')
Fun and interesting analysis as always. Like you said, it's crazy that a hugely popular children's show like Arthur had a full-on reggae opening and nobody ever really commented on it!
If I could be so bold as to suggest a future topic, I'd LOVE to see you discuss Kow Otani's illustrious work on SHADOW OF THE COLOSSUS, and maybe squeeze in some of his music from the 90s Gamera trilogy as well. If anything, as a piano guy, you should be enthralled by the final credits theme from SotC.
Can we just talk about when DW laughs at the beginning of the main theme?....
Her laugh can be easily transcribe into a rhythmic pattern, listen to how syncopated her laugh is on the off beat. Triplets maybe? I'm not too sure with out listening and sitting at my piano and figuring out the rhythm!!
Charles enthusiasm and energy makes me want to learn to play piano.
Do it, best decision I’ve ever made. Can’t tell you how many friends I’ve made from it.
this show…. i’m literally tearing up from the nostalgia
When you played the bridge I swear it felt like a bridal entrance ❤❤ thank you for showing this song some love
This is literally where I fell in love with Reggae...sure, maybe I didn't know that's what it was...but I loved Reggae/Funk as a kid more than any other kid my age...and this was the reason why. When I would sing this song as a kid, I would sing that Reggae influence even stronger, and usually in a really bad Jamaican accent, just because that was the only other influence that was associated with Reggae. But this song was a huge formation of my love for Reggae/Funk as a kid.
My daughter use to watch that all the time and when I first heard the theme song, it made me stop and listen. And not only because it was reggae but the hook was strong.
I feel like I would be a different person if I didn’t watch any Arthur as a kid. Arthur literally helped me make friends as a kid and helped me be who I am today. Arthur is a must-watch. Even adults can take away valuable life lessons from this show!😍
Believe in yourself cuz that's the place to start
My dad was always a huge music history enthusiast when I was a kid and loved to talk with me about the strong influence of the Black community on American music. From a young age he exposed me to blues, jazz, reggae, and R&B that he loved. I remember him getting so excited when he realized this was Ziggy Marley! He still likes to talk about how much he loves the cartoons I grew up with and mention Arthur haha.
Have you covered the theme song to Chip 'N Dale's Rescue Rangers yet? I love how it starts in a somber minor key which sets the mood and then explodes into the major key. 'We Three Kings (of Orient Are)' also behaves in the same manner.
8:40 “Can any body find meeeeee….somebody tooooooo….loooooooove”
for me, your videos are a great way to get the inspiration flowing to write songs. the energy you bring to a handful of chords is inspiring!
yoooo!! the whole first section i was like "i gotta go listen to the Chance the Rapper version after this" and then you pulled it out yourself. Absolute madman.
As the theme song states, believe in yourself, comrades. Have faith in your abilities! Without a humble but reasonable confidence in your own powers you cannot be successful or happy. Always remember to never give up. No obstacle can stop you, unless you don't try.
thanks, Kim Jong-un!
그럼 왜 음악에 관련된 채널에 글을 오르셨어요? ㅋㅋ

You're not the real Kim Jong-un
@@BlueCometEntertainment347 no he actually is
I love this song when I was growing up. A really cool Ziggy Marley Song.
Arthur has SO MANY catchy songs in it. Especially Arthur's perfect Christmas 😂
It baffled me that someone could not realize that the theme is reggae until I remembered that the only reason I probably picked up on it as a kid was because I was used to hearing reggae already since I’m half-Jamaican 😅
Yep, it’s reggae that’s why it always had that “feel good” vibe.
Shouts out to the piccolo snares it opens with, for being able to tell me from three rooms away that I needed to rush back to the living room because Arthur was starting.
Lol for my comp & arranging class in school I did rhythm changes over the Arthur theme song. such an amazing bop. So glad you referenced Chance's work here too :) amazing work as always, Charles :D
I actually heard 1, 5, 6-, 4 on the bridge of the original arrangement, although the 6- is short-lived.
there’s clearly a 6- before going to the 4. it’s such a satisfying part of the bridge for me that i don’t know how the hell he missed it completely
This is an absolutely amazing breakdown, gave me all the feels and made my day
11:52 that A dominant chord hit different.
Hotel California is basically reggae too. As a kid, I always wondered how it became a ”classic rock” song
I’ve always loved that social experiment cover. It’s the perfect tribute to something nostalgic.
Late to the party, but just came across this video. You have an amazing ear. This vid is bringing back memories of my high school music theory class. Also love your excitement. Thought I was the only one who reacts to songs like that.
This is dope. You should do a video on “Angela” the theme song from the tv show Taxi as well. Tried figuring out on piano and took a bit due to how harmonically complex it is.
Seconding this! Angela is such a beautiful song and feelings like the theme of New York to me because of Taxi's opening.
The backing music from Arthur was phenomenal too. There's one sad piano theme in E flat major that manages to just be heartbreaking. Ray Fabi's band did a fantastic job with it.
Love that this combines Arthur reggae with Chance. Such a cool deep dive. His passion is contagious.
and here's the video I did not know I needed my whole life
Charles: Woo! Listen to this bass line!
My phone: Bass line..?
Favourite vid yet! All the feels 💕
Can’t wait to hear you’re input
In the end when you were adding different keys I was getting some ready Mr. Rodgers vibes
Amazing 😎 Thank you
Yesss, when I saw the title I was hoping it was going to be him gushing about wonderful everyday. Legit one of the best reinterpretations I've heard from the last few years.
Man, I never heard Chance's version before, but holy shit it's so good.
The quality of these videos is insane
Oh man the amount of nostalgia I got from this video is overwhelming
This is incredible!
I play the keyboard as well..
I like how you explain the chord progressions..
I've often done the same when i play and show friends...
Some songs sometimes sound so complex and it ends up being c f g..
Or something easy like that!!
I would love it, if for all these song analysis, that you create an entire cover for us to listen to or watch you perform at the end :'D
I mean… of course it’s reggae! Weirdly I intuitively knew that as a kid, but I didn’t remember that in retrospect. Prompted by the title of your video my hazy memory of the song was like “it was just like a kinda happy hip hop tune wasn’t it?”
Also, do remember the sort of cascading sound of “believe in yourself” being intoxicatingly beautiful
I haven't been deep into music since high school, and this channel makes me want to get back into learning about it more in-depth. I miss those days of my friend and I figuring out our favorite songs from video games just by echoing off one another to learn tunes like Dark World or Death Mountain from Link to the Past. On a similar note, I hope you cover Halo's musical soundtrack sometime soon. Just avoid Halo 4's tunes if you do a video, they're incredibly beautiful but also very prone to copyright strikes :(
Holy Shit! I wasn't expecting you to bring Chance's version into your video. I'm so happy! It's my favourite version of the intro
Even crazier when you learn that Bob Marley’s son, Ziggy Marley, performs the song
banging track, also love Mona the Vampire, so soulful!!!
The CyberChase theme song lowkey slaps! Do that next.
Man you should definitely check out the ost of this show cause it is much more interesting than the main opening song.
lol I woke up with this song in my head, and then you post this... Was literally humming it at work thinking about that bass line
This breakdown made me happy ❤
I was waiting for this one

Arthur was the best. The lyrics are beautiful, great composition. It reminds me of Little Mermaid theme song I think it's reggea. Great breakdown
I loved that theme song!!!
ONE OF THE GREATEST INTRO SONG TO A SHOW EVER!!!!!!!
I clicked thinking that you were going to talk about Christopher Cross's song Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do) 😆😆
Has Prof. C ever noted what vst, program, or piano he is using? That piano tone is *chef's kiss*.
The Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers theme is a solid metal hit.
my dad listens to a bit of reggae so I knew immediately the first time I heard it and loved the show as a result
Please listen to the Master of Masters Theme from Kingdom Hearts. The theme of the track and the character together just screams "planned insanity" and I would love to see your take on the piece.
The Arthur theme song being reggae just blew my mind

They should've made a piano instrumental version of the theme song for a few episodes or even the final episode after choosing to end it cause the theme on piano sounds beautiful.
Chance got some New Orleans vibes in his remix?! Wow! 13:50
For that A dominat chord add the b7th (Bb) to add more tension.
Oh im early. Keep on making good content! I've been subbed for a bit of time now, over a year. Thanks for the entertainment and knowledge
Having ADHD and approximate pitch you end up on a scavenger hunt trying to figure out what song the chords @2:30 remind you of.
It's Baba O'Riley by The Who
