Not enough about the real genius of the band, Allen Collins, one of the greatest natural guitarists I have ever seen! It is why I took up the instrument. Collins was the main man!

Gene has said many times that if ya took Allen away, you would lose the Skynyrd sound altogether. Through a few interviews, it's also obvious that Gene got to where he eventually didn't like Gary very much, as a matter of fact, Gene stated that Ronnie secretly confided in Gene & talked him into becoming the band's financial manager as soon as the tour was over. The very tour they started & the plane crash happened. Anyway, Ronnie had confided in Gene telling him that he suspected that money was being skimmed by the current people who managed the money......so Gene said: "OK Ronnie, I'll do it ( Gene was already Ronnie's bodyguard & head of security of course ), but I need to know something else, is there anyone else in the band that we can trust or not trust? Can we trust Gary?"........and Gene said Ronnie instantly replied: "Hell no, Gary is the worst, he'd cut my throat if he knew he could get away with it".....END QUOTE. And judging by the way Artimus, Gary, and Billy was all going after each other by slinging dirty laundry, I BELIEVE Gene 100%..............Ever since Ronnie, Steve, and Cassie died in that plane crash, I believe & trust Gene more than the rest of em put together.

Gene Odom ,a great friend to Ronnie Vanzant and Lynyrd Skynyrd Band. He is a man of God and you can feel that when he speaks of his time with Skynyrd. He was friends with the other bands in Jacksonville and Gainesville FL. I enjoy hearing all the interviews with him , I believe he speaks the truth. Others may be liars, but not Gene, the man has Jesus in his heart. He is kind and very polite. Thank you for this audio interview with him , it was very much enjoyed. Keep on rocking brothers and sisters of the Skynyrd Nation ✌️&🤘.

Marilyn Mack Ronnie wanted that guy as his manager. He managed The Who and The Stones and Ronnie thought it would be cool if he managed Skynyrd too. The guy was a scum bag. But it was their destiny, unfortunately. This manager single handedly destroyed the band. He told Ronnie "the crazier you are, the better you'll be". And Ronnie believed him. But it was all bullshit so he could steal from the band. This guy wanted to save on traveling costs so he got them a shotty plane for their last tour and the rest is history.

It's insane, the amount of crazy and incorrect conspiracy theories surrounding this band, and their awful airplane crash in October 1977.

@@wingnutt4200 Hi, thank you for that quick response, that's very cool😎. Same here on the research, I get into deep research on various things, I enjoy digging deep and learning about things that interest me. Ive always been a rocker, and certainly I've always been a big Lynyrd Skynyrd. I dove into the history of the band, and of course their horrible airplane crash. Still reading and watching various videos. CZcams is awesome. I don't know how you feel about Gene Odom, I myself tend to believe him, his story hasn't really changed over the years as some have, and he just seems like a straight up genuine type man. It almost always starts trouble, and so I generally avoid bringing it up too much, but I don't get this attitude or picture that so many people have, about Ronnie. Extremely talented vocalist, and songwriter. That said, that man was no saint. Everyone has flaws, and makes bad decisions at times. Ronnie was, according to firsthand accounts from several band members, and others, a mean and nasty guy when he drank. I'm sure you've read about him badly slashing Rossington's hand with a broken bottle. He could be very abusive to those around him, it's no big secret if you research them some. It's pretty much accepted that he drove Ed King away, because Ed simply wouldn't put up with that atmosphere, and senseless violent outbursts, from the leader of the band. Don't get me wrong, Ronnie was very talented, and had a very serious work ethic, and determination. For me, there really wasn't anymore (real) Lynyrd Skynyrd, after that plane crash. What may have been, we will never know. They were just beginning to hit their stride. The addition of Steve Gaines, was a fantastic move. Steve was world class on guitar. I think the crash was the beginning of the end for Allen Collins, he never really recovered from the trauma. The album he recorded with Gary, as well as his own solo album in 1983, are both stellar works, in my opinion at least. Anyway......I'm rambling, I can discuss the Lynyrd Skynyrd band at length, so I'll just leave it at this. Thank you for the response 🙂

Gene was only on road w/band a few mos before crash. He was more babysitter to keep guys (inc Ronnie) off the hard liquor & drugs. That's why he was in everybody's business, tryin to keep them from killin themselves, within a few wks in 76 Allen, Gary & Billy all had seperate car accidents. Allen & Gary others besides that. Ronnie was abt as bad as others but was afraid someone would die. Ironic.
Gene wasn't around when they were writing much. Freebird & SHA both written at hell house.
It was Gary or Allen who had part of SHA & Ed came up beginning lick.
Gene always bad mouthed esp abt the lawsuit, whole thing was abt usin Skynyrd name for profit, when Judy got her & Teresa Gaines cut she was fine, any time she fought with them ended up bein over money she wanted.
Gene has written 2 books etc so Gene is makin money off the name too.
He claims JVZ had nothin to do with it yet Judy sued JVZ, his name is on the suit with evrryone else, you can find who thing online.

Started out watchin Steve & I was like holy shit I missed out on a lot olus back in those days unless you went to concert you really had no idea who did what, how electrifying they were on stage so been watchin video, listening to interviews, anything I can find, just read Tuen It Up by Ron Eckerman which gives great insight of touring with Skynyrd in 76-77, he was on plane as well but he focused on life on the road.
Anyway, my mom died Aug 8 77 then crash 2 most later, I find myself grieving over loss because they are my favorite band of all time but too busy grieving my mom so all this is bittersweet, bless U tube that I get to enjoy all of this.
