She also sang on all of their songs although she didn't tour with them or tour at the time. All of the girls except Mary took a break at one time or another. You'll often see later pictures of Mary, Betty and just one of the twins. See the cover of their 'Golden Hits' album.

I can imagine, I recently only discovered this song and it's kne of the best songs I've ever heard.
Wow! There were charts back in that time?
When you hear a song for the first time, it's just you and the song. When you know how popular a song is, you start hearing others singing the most popular parts.
The Cowboys have never been the same without you.
I first heard this back in 64 and to this day that background vocal just kicks my ass. Unbelievably, i never knew what they looked like until now. That Mary Weiss, oh brother!

RIP, beautiful Mary...I am SO SAD. 💔 We lost a great one from "our time". Absolutely loved the ShangriLas...the sound track to our teenage years. Much love and prayers up. 🙏🏻✝️❤️😪
Funnily enough because of Tik Tok it's the soundtrack to teenage years now!
This song came out when most of our boyfriends were being ripped away from us & shipped to Viet Nam. We lived for letters that came from them...or would never come to us again...all we had were our memories till they came home--alive, or not. This song perfectly expressed our emotions...
Thrilling, amazing music! I crave listening to this, letting it fill me with its power! One thing that I loved about the group was the emotional openness, honesty and vulnerability of the lyrics, of persons- women- who weren't too afraid to feel and show hurt, for example, not just pose as tough and always self-assured. As far as images went and all that it meant, weren't they packaged (I mean this realistically, not intending cynicism) as "bad tough girls who were nonetheless true to boyfriends and who all (four) had hearts of gold and a kind, honest relationship? Image-wise, if taken (at all) seriously, these young women were the stuff of nightmares and panic, loathing by many parents and authorities, who feared, for example, in Heteroland, that their sons would get these women prematurely pregnant, etc., the stuff of young tragic or rocky road, difficult love and life. I care about music and feeling, and their music works on me! On a light note, I love the hairstyles ( all of the looks!), and I love every time I see a big hairdo, a beehive, any of it. I love flips, too- my late fiancee chose to have a neat flip for her high school graduation picture (later, in '69), and she looked fabulous with that style.:) The shoes of that era seem under represented, under- commented upon (but not undocumented). I liked the fashions and styles of that era, when I was so young. (I was born in '61.)

No one who was alive when this song was a hit watches TikTok. TikTok is just one tiny symptom of the total collapse of civilization. When this song came out, people didn't insult strangers millions of times a day, we were friendly to one another, we respected each other's feelings and had free speech, all at the same time. Computers, cellphones and greedy media controllers ruined our beautiful world. There's almost no resemblance to the beautiful world I lived in when this song was a hit.

Their producer, George "Shadow" Morton, said that "Mary Weiss was an actress" -- that the main reason for the effectiveness of their songs was Mary's convincing delivery of the story-lyrics.
Seriously a great song written by a guy named George "Shadow" Morton who was being questioned by songwriters Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich on whether he was able to write a song. He drove out to Long Island and parked at the beach and wrote the entire song. Presented it to Barry/Greenwich (which to say they were left with their jaws hanging). What a group of girls! Too bad Mary's sister Betty (Elizabeth Weiss) left the band. The four girls were incredible. The girls were born and raised in Cambria Heights, NY (Queens). All the Great Girl Groups of The 60s Were Fabulous. For Example The Ronets , The Angels , The Orlons , The Shangralas , The Shirells . And All of the rest of them. The Music of the early to mid 60s was Fabulous. The Ones Who We Have Lost Will Never Be Forgotten.❤ All The Doo Woop Groups Who Have Lost Their Members Will Never Be Forgotten Either. 😊
Mary, Thank you. RIP
THIS should be used on tiktok instead of that annoying chipmunk version
NO, this is another song that tik tokers have ruined for me. i’ve been listening to it for a long time now and just hearing people say “oh it’s that song from tik tok” makes my blood boil.
@@christiansuazo2970 Dude, thats how the internet works.
@@Devvo0z well i find it great that younger generations can find out about these classics but just categorizing them as “tiktok songs” is so annoying. they could at least learn the name of it
SHARE THIS ORIGINAL SONG TO MAKE THIS SONG FAMOUS
this sounds great than the TikTok Version, To be honest the TikTok Version "oh no no no" is so annoying to hear
SHARE THIS ORIGINAL SONG TO MAKE THIS SONG FAMOUS
@@christiansuazo2970 Why do people have this gatekeeping mentality? The fact that it memed on tiktok means people found the Capone song where they remix this and he raps (actual rapping) over the beat. Then people discover this song. what is wrong with that?
The guy who made the viral song is being sued for the sample.
good, its like the idiot who used the entirety of Tiny Little Adiantum but sped it up and added random lyrics over it and sold it for $$$$ because it trended on tiktok
@Kai McCook Yeah when I heard this song from goodfellas i thought it was scummy to steal the song but just ped it this song is great
Good lord, they better do
Hopefully Shadow Morton’s estate gets some good dough out of that! :)
good
RIP Mary. Love those black pvc jumpsuits!
Great work RIP MARY ☹
Mary at about 16 sang with more emotion and soul them most contemporary singers today are capable of, this was 1964 teen angst.
AMEN.!
She was 14 and in the studio recording , they waited til she was 15 to release it , the other girls were 17 (two sisters ) and the 4th was 18 .
love the word angst, so appropriate
easy to see why
To be fair, most of the singers back then weren't capable of this either, you just don't hear about the bad singers anymore.
When you and the fellas are digging up a body that’s been decomposing for 6 months.
me and the _goodfellas_
@@Unfrightable the movie GoodFellas. In the scene where the song plays, Henry Hill, Jimmy Conway and Tommy DeVito have to dig up a decomposing body from a formerly unmarked location in the woods due to the area being used for condominiums.
They are leaving us now. RIP Mary Doll.
Whenever I listen to stuff like this I am reminded that my obsession with Lana Del Rey is really an obsession with the Shangri-La's and Dinah Washington
Forget knowing the song from TikTok, I feel ignorant not knowing "whatever happened to the life that we once knew" from the Beatles song "Free As A Bird" is a direct musical and lyrical reference to this song.
Free as a bird was an unreleased demo until the 2000s. This is probably a coincidence. in fact the part Paul sings was written for the anthology release and wasn't originally part of the song. Great song though.
@@Danocaster214 Idk, it makes sense. The Beatles definitely knew the Shangri-las so it's not so hard to believe
@@asafcohen8796 They performed together on stage so they defo knew each other.
I heard this song many years ago, I think from a Cold Case episode (of all things). And I was like “wait a minute…” because I thought the exact same thing about Paul’s vocals. But I never knew who sang it or what it was called until years later, and I would always incorrectly call it “Walking in the Rain”. Fast forward a few more years, and now it’s been turned into an intolerable snippet for dumb videos.
@Meadow Pinkelle I have some bad news for you about "My Sweet Lord". Look it up. A lot of their early songs are pretty similar to 50s rock songs because rock was a bit more homogenous then. "Dig A Pony" also sounds musically similar to Joe Cocker's cover of the Beatles' own "With A Little Help From My Friends"
Only popular about 2 years and it's amazing that they didn't die of exhaustion. They worked those girls hard. Still stands the test of time.
rocky mullins more talented and original over these talentless groups nowadays.
I distinctly remember some of those scenes. They may have appeared on the Mike Douglas show; Ed Sullivan?. c. 1963? 64?
Being a Boomer..this tune was my older sister’s, favorite tune..RIP..Mary Weiss.

It isnt the tik tok version, its the remix
@@Daniel_Plainview you act like you loved this 60s song before tiktok 💀 I guarantee you discovered it through one of the tiktok videos

TikTok didn't ruin anything you clinging people, it gave a song the appreciation and attention it deserves
It gave appreciation to the crappy remix. Everyone thinks the remix is its own song.
Just wonderful all these years later my dad loved it*
Mary really was something special. Great voice and so gorgeous. Brilliant record. Thanks for putting this video up.
I agree with what someone said here, this song defined the era, "it really did". This was a very very special song when it came out, big big hit. And yes, I remember it well, I'm 70 years old.
CKLW radio "The Big 8" Windsor, Ont. played this a lot. It was THE pop radio station in those days. Absolute tops. Bigger than any radio station in LA or NYC btw.
Don't (date) us man!...lol
