Enoch was one of the most brilliant men of our time.there is no politician alive today who can hold a candle to him.His detractors are irrelevant.

@anthonybasrd. In my day we lived laughed played with our friends, despite a war going on with all its ramifications. The word race or racism wasn’t heard of.There were no. Black people.I went back to my old home in Tottenham recently.I was flabbergasted.I was in a foreign country.I was really shocked.I will never go back.my grandsons said the same.

A deeply misunderstood man. Enoch was a brilliant classical scholar but the ordinary folk in the Tory party didn’t comprehend his classical references and misunderstood him.

Enoch Powell was greatly misunderstood because his classical education & towering intellect were way beyond the wit of others.

And because he was almost certainly autistic. Secondly, his use of logic became irrational and detached from reality. As Denis Healey said of him, his conclusions were often a "reductio ad absurdum". Or as Harold Macmillan said, "Poor Enoch. The remorselessness of his logic has driven him mad".

Many people now believe that Enoch Powell was somewhere on the autistic spectrum. Some of his eccentric behaviour is very typical.

I've also heard Gordon Brown and William Hague described as autistic, I suspect this just reflects the anti intellectualism of our times. No one calls Wayne Rooney autistic because he's only interested in football.

Isn't it bloody time in this country that we stopped taking "classical scholar" as seeming to bestow some special sort of distinction on the person? As if classical scholar is a test and measure of character... Pretentiousness still thriving. Now, this is not necessarily a criticism of Powell, who was a fascinating yet also very divisive figure, with many qualities and many flaws, and simply cannot be drawn in black and white. No, my opening comment is a criticism of the flawed, superficial thinking that still dominates daily discourse

Enoch Powell was a racist. His famous 1968 'Rivers of Blood' speech made this quite clear. In that speech, he referred to black children as 'wide grinning 'piccaninies'. If you say "Enoch was right" or make excuses for him because, like Boris Johnson more recently, his prejudices were partly obscured by a veneer of classicism, then that makes you a racist too. End of.
