Main reason most people watch is the world-class athletes, skill level, and complexity--the hits are part of the game and strategy, but since there is hitting on every single play, it is not the driving force.
It may be that you have to play the game to really understand it. It is a game for aggressive young men. It is a total adrenaline rush when you get it going. I loved it.
Yes it’s rough but there is so much strategy. There is a really fun video called clueless European guide to American football. It explains the game really well and it’s funny
Welcome to the NFL, its one of the big four sports we have here. The others are MLB, NBA and NHL, and don't forget college football, it's bigger than the NFL. The 15 biggest stadiums are all college.8 are over 100K. a few suggestions MLB 15 longest home runs NFL here comes the boom NBA best slam dunks NHL glass-breaking moments.
You have a long way to go on your American Football journey. I played a lot of football until college. Now that I'm very old & retired, there is seemingly no brain damage at all. Although some would argue the point.
Its still a savage sport for sure but the game has been softened a lot in recent years, most of the hits in this video would be penalized now. Edit, you asked about the helmet being protection enough, it helps but no its not. I played for several years growing up and got multiple concussions.
American football is perhaps the most complex game in the world with every team having up 600 offensive plays. Yes, these teams playbooks are thicker than the Oxford Dictionary. On each play every offensive player has a specific movement, positioning, and assignment. Both soccer and rugby may indeed be more free flowing and the action may be more constant. But American football is more complex than either sport combined. To top it off some of the athletes in pro football are some the best athletes in the world. Big, strong, fast, and hostile.
LOL...even as a child with neighborhood football games played on our yards, I was the youngest and one of the smallest but I had no fear of trying to tackle the ball carrier regardless of size. I had a job and did it. I just toughed it out.

A few of the older hits were illegal even back then, and a few more would be illegal today, but most of them are still OK.

I played "backyard" American football with minimal pads, it was fun when you're young, lol. A Long time ago I think the helmets were thicker.
