Blood Sweat and Tears video and song were built and written based on Demian, a novel by Hermann Hesse which won a nobel prize in literature back in 1946. I read this book (because of this Mv) and I'll try my best to interpret and summarize the story here.
The story follows a young boy named Sinclair who had a friend named Demian. Demian acted as Sinclair's mentor during his childhood and transition to adulthood. Sinclair as a young adult experienced series of existential crisis, believing he lived in between the world of light (the world of illusion, full of goodness) and "the dark world" (the real world which was full of lust, temptation, anger and evil world).
Demian, and later on Sinclair's another mentor Pistorius, believed that in order to become a full person a human needs to embrace both of their light and dark sides. This will then lead Sinclair to find out about Abraxas, the god of light and darkness.
There are sooo many imageries and jawdropping details on the MV that represent details in the book. But the point is this song is about the loss of innocence and temptation, about being a human and embracing both of your good and dark sides.
The scene where Jin kissed the statue (which I believe the representation of Abraxas) means he seals the deal with the devil himself in order to fully embrace himself as a person who isn't perfect, full of flaws.
The white and black doors represent the world of light and the real world. Suga playing piano represents Pistorius who was an organ player in the story. The phrase that RM read in English here was also taken from the book, page 26 (on the version that I read). It says "He too was a tempter, he too was a link to the second, the evil world with which I no longer have anything to do."
"He" here refers to Demian, that Sinclair once thought as a bad influence for him, maybe it's because Sinclair tried to deny his dark sides.
The book is heavily influenced by a swiss philosopher and psychiatrist Carl Jung. One of his pupils was Hermann Hesse's doctor back then. This MV and song are also influenced by a german philosopher Nietzche. There's a quote by him on the wall above the painting that Jin is staring at. It is in German but it means "You must have chaos within you in order to give a birth to a dancing star". Again, the same theme occurs here, about embracing both of your light and dark sides. Only by accepting your flaws and mistakes you can reach your true potentials.
Hesse learned a lot about Jung's psychoanalysis and experienced it himself so that was why Demian was heavily influenced by it. What makes it even more interesting, BTS album MOTS 7 is also based on Carl Jung's theory (hence the songs Persona, Shadow, and Ego were born-- these 3 elements are important in Jung's theory Maps of the Soul).
BTS are deep, my friends. They talk about real things like the pain of growing up and youth's experience. They literally make a lot of armys become smarter and read on classic literature like this because of them. lol. Welcome to the fandom!
(Please note once again that this is all my own interpretation after reading the book, take it with a grain of salt.)

Personally, I interpret the destruction(?) of Madonna’s statue as the boy’s loss of innocence (the MV started with them playing, with the toys and books they hold symbolizing childhood and Jin’s discovery of the painting as opening to desires), and for a mother, her child falling into temptation would “break” her.

I agree. Jin kissing the Lucifer is like making pact with the devil, giving in the temptation. And mother Marry represents innocence (virgin Marry), so destruction of statue is loosing the innocence.
I red Demian long time ago, but I remember the feeling while reading it, like Demian is the devil who is tempting the main character and somehow has a bad influence on him.
Also Jin kissing the statue of devil reminds me of Faust and selling the soul to the devil.
V's smirk, i would say he represents the devil and he's like "i got you" when Jin kissed the statue.

(BTW, this corresponds to the author's life as well). So breaking of pieta makes sense cause it represents both of these things. Once Damien (and other mentors) started appearing in Sinclair's life, the image he had of life (and religion, and his parents) shattered

I’ve seen other reactors who constantly praise the group and offer a shallow interpretation. So I love the deep dive you do. Who uses Herman Hesse and Nietzsche in their MV? Or dedicate an entire album (MOTS Persona and 7) to explore Carl Jung’s process of individuation? 💜 1st love your reactions! I am older than both of you and can understand a lot of your references. I love that you use what you know to understand this. It’s natural. I really hope you are enjoying your journey ( minus rude comments).I have been on this journey 6 years and still learning.
I found the CZcams channel DKDK TV to be very helpful. They are a Korean CZcams channel ( they are easy to understand don’t worry - no need for captions) who seem ( as far as I can tell ) focus on Korean culture and K-pop. They have explanation videos for A-LOT of BTS videos.
Not only do they translate any Korean lyrics into English, but since sometimes a word can have complex meanings they also translate the meanings of the words for the song. They tell us about any cultural meanings behind the songs. I would go and type in DKDK TV explanation for Blood, Sweat, and Tears. Then watch it and not only will you see what I mean , but you’ll appreciate getting translations and meanings straight for a reliable source.
They will also translate the lat Festa dinner too. As the translation to English for that was really bad ( incorrect and not complete ). I would watch these off camera so you can take your time and enjoy the process. I would also say to look at them or XxCeleste for info as both only state factual info they have found ( especially XxCeleste ). She will actually tell you if she is not sure or that she is still looking into official info. They have better resources since they are closer to the source. Any way enjoy.
( also ) Other channels other than these two can give you More Detailed info , different perspectives on the group/individuals or delve into the theory explanation parts of things ( they are NOT lacking at all, and have nothing wrong with them. Top two above just mainly deal with straightforward facts which are the starting point before expanding into all the Details of BTS. )
      2. In the 6 years I have been following them I have seen more positive then negative BTS fans. As WE know it comes with the territory ( not pleasant to deal with , but yeah).
The worst ones I report ( wether BTS related or not.. bad is bad). The others I skip by. I am sorry you had to deal with them, but hopefully that is past and done for now.
Just know that people who truly consider themselves ARMY try to follow and learn from the example the boys create with their behavior, actions and moral beliefs towards others and what is and is not considered an appropriate response to things.
This is good as well…. They just make you want to be a better person without realizing it , to want to learn more , discover more and help more. They do it without fully understanding just how refreshing they are for the music scene and beyond. They enjoy each other’s company honestly and let us in and have broken down and still let us in as much as possible.
I want to still discover more and be better , partly because of them. I also appreciate the fact that they are ok with me being me and accept that I wouldn’t always think just like them OR just follow them blindly with out thinking for myself. I like having extra encouragement to just be the best me I can be with no other expectations. It’s nice to not have to adult all the time.
So I hope you can balance out the bad and weigh in the good. We ( ARMY) really need people like you who do reactions in such a straight forward and honest way.
You make them think and bring a different perspective than they have had before ( frankly by people who look old enough to have more than enough experience to give varied opinions. ). I’m technically Catholic too, although a very bad one with pagan leanings BUT, the Mary part caught my attention as well but to me it just felt like an additional representation of a loss of innocence, and everything breaking down. Once through this journey, you can’t go back and everything you knew to be true before, breaks down and you have to look at it with new eyes. Jin cracking, Jimins green tears, chaos initiating growth. In this video I feel like she was the lone representation of the mother archetype, and she cannot prevent the loss of innocence, or coming of age.

    • @saintleadcrow
      @saintleadcrow Před rokem +11

Yeah, I also wondered if it was the moving away from the mother ideal, Mary and embracing, literally kissing, the fallen angel/ new idea of Lucifer/knowledge. The idea that you must destroy the past or really, the past ceases to be ie explodes dramatically? once you move past it. Like you said, you literally can never go back. So, it was the extra dramatic way or moving forward past being cradled, even in death, to a future walking forward and meeting a new thing alone and on your own terms.
There was also, Hermes and Hestia? I think in the background in some scenes behind doorways, visually different spaces, and they were two important household gods so overall it's a coming of age story but why didn't those gods crumble too? Or were the MV chars walking towards making their own spaces apart from the Mary as mother idea. Gosh. I could talk/think about this for one thousand years and really? I think the best part about this video is how rich it is in imagery that gives so much leeway for interpretation, it has a strong central idea Growing Up, but around that there's so much more.

@@saintleadcrow Yes. Each reference is it’s own little rabbit hole, yet they mesh together. The mother archetype is fascinating. I am always reminded that everyone was once someone’s little baby. There is that moment a parent recognizes their helplessness in being able to protect their child from everything. As a child you also have to recognize when it’s time to separate from the parents protection. As a mother I was constantly aware of the milestones in my sons life where I was being “replaced” by his growth and experiences. They need you every second until a certain point and then those needs fall away one by one. Sometimes they replace those needs with themselves, sometimes they hand them to someone else. The temptation in this video is really beautiful.

Strap in for my explanation for the shattering Pietà!
The Pietà depicts Mary grieving her son, a loss of innocence. Both, the philosophy of Demian and of the work the Nietzsche quote was lifted from, say that a loss of innocence is necessary to start to come into one's true self.
Following that thought, it's necessary to let go of one's grief for the loss of innocence to truely become a complete, true self. Therefore this representation of grieving a loss of innocence shattering is a depiction of the final step in self-actualization: finally letting go of your grief for what was and accepting the truth of light and dark, good and evil, temptation and resistance in the world.
After this grief finally passes (shatters), the "old" version of Jin starts to crack. I see this crack as less of a "Jin will shatter" and more as a "a new Jin is about to be born", like a bird from an egg.
(Sorry if this I expressed this badly, English is not my first language!)

To tie in with this.. the part where RM speaks, Jin with the balloon, it mirrors Banksy's portrait. The portrait represents the loss of innocense, the portrait also represent the fact that in our innocense, childhood, we always have hope. So it is also shows the loss of hope. Fun fact, Banksy had a build in paper shredder in that portrait. When the portrait sold, the shredder was activated and the portrait was shredded half way. BANKSY stated that art is not for sale, which in my opinion circles back to what they said in Yet to come.

This is how I interpreted the statue of Mary. In BTS's universe there will be a lot of references to the mother (basically her influence, whether present or absent, positive or negative). The videos, short films and even the Notes will have references and it will be a lot to go into them and be a bit spoilerish so I wont. But since Blood, sweat and tears heavily references Demian: The story of Emil Sinclair's youth by Hermann Hesse and he is influenced by Carl Jung, the female figures in the novel are represented by Emil's mother, Demian's mother Frau Eva and even a woman named Beatrice.
In the novel itself we see Emil interacting with certain characters and because Hesse is influenced by Jung, I saw those characters as representing Jungian archetypes of self, persona, shadow, ego (which BTS have addressed in their music videos). But we also have the anima/animus archetype which I believe the statue represents. Men would be represented by their inner anima (feminine) while women would have their inner animus (masculine). So in anima there are 4 main figures - Eve, Helen, Mary and Sophia. Mary is supposed to represent righteousness and be a 'paragon of virtue' and yes, the name was taken from the Virgin Mary. At least to my knowledge the statue wasn't taken to mean Mary (as the mother of Jesus) but what she represents as in being a mother and of course her status in society. So in overall the statue represents the anima in Jung's collective unconscious theory.
Just to add - the cracking of the statues, Jin's face, all represents the concept of 'the bird flies out of the egg...' a quote in reference to Abraxas. And for a bird to emerge from an egg, it needs to destroy that protection, that shell that keeps them secure from the outside world. And a mother should form that 'protection' because she is supposed to represent comfort and security, supposed to guide to you what's right and guide you away from what's wrong. But in the mv there are all these temptations as the guys are in their maturity stage, grown beyond adolescence and having to navigate the world and its temptations. It's like Emil being sheltered in his own world until he becomes aware of unusual, strange things (strange because it's his level of innocence and unawareness of real life in the beginning). Plus Emil has to deal with that opposing factors can coexist - eg, good and evil. We see this in the mv a lot - good and evil, flight and fall, heaven and hell, angel and devil statues until Jin meets the statue where these contrasts coexist. The winged status represents Abraxas who has good and evil coexisting but also represents flight and fall considering that it lost its wings, plus it being a white statue with black wings. Okay back to the cracking or destruction of things. The destruction represents that loss but also influences his development into something more - like what was said in the video - 'finding your true self' or self development through understanding of Jungian archetypes. But even with this destruction and basically Emil's safe secure world shattering, he finds out what the real world is like and he's drawn to it so much that he needs more of it (refer to repetition of 'more' in the lyrics itself).
Tbh I have so many thoughts about this whole music video that it will turn into a whole unplanned essay but I'll stop here. :)

I dont care about blasphemy, im an atheist, but people on internet cant always talk about "respect this" "respect that" and then they are okay with the destroying of a christian religious statue in a video that they knew billions of people would have watched. The company for once should have said what that was or not having done that at all. Hey guys. The entire Wings era is basically about temptation and coming to accept that you have both good and evil in you. The Wings short films have RM reading from Demian too. There is a connection between Hesse and Jung and they moved on to Jungian themes next. The statue represents Abraxas rather than Lucifer, as in the book, and Yoongi at the organ also represents a character in the book, one who had a positive influence on Sinclair. My mind is scattered but note in Yet to Come the statue in the desert has white wings now. There a lot of small differences in the Yet to Come MV looking back on past videos and themes that reflect growth and change.

I think colleges can go into a whole year of classes just to analyze this whole concept and the relativity and impact it gives to humans in general. As ARMY can agree, what makes BTS more special than any other artists is that BTS doesn't just make great music for music's sake but they go beyond to educate and heal us. They are the ones who teaches us how to fish instead of just giving us the fish. They educate us to think for ourselves and heal ourselves in the process. I can honestly say that I have never seen any other music artist ever do that in my lifetime. They are more than just musicians or artists. This MV is sort of in the middle of the storyline. So it's understandable that the meaning is unclear for you. It's like opening a book and starting reading at chapter 10 lol J-Hope is the one in front of the Madonna and child. His character is associated with the image of a mother and child as it has a key meaning for his character. Another famous piece of art, a painting simply called Mother and Child, is used in association with his character. Man this is difficult to explain without spoilers! lol Basically this is the point in story where they give in to temptation (or are forced to face the grown up world for the first time) and loose their innocence. Each of them have had something (an object) that represents both that innocence (in J-Hopes case a candy bar) and the catalyst for that loss ( the breaking of the image of mother and child). So I see the breaking of the statue as his loss of innocence in a sudden, violent manner. And that's all I'm going to say because ...spoilers! lol

despite everything i still think they shouldn't have destroyed her statue's face. Meaning for the mv or not, a lot of times when people attack churches they destroy christian statues' faces, im Syrian and my father is Iraqi, so i know what im talking about....so its disrespectfullness at its maximum. I dont care about blasphemy, im an atheist, but people on internet cant always talk about "respect this" "respect that" and then they are okay with the destroying of a christian religious statue in a video that they knew billions of people would have watched. The company for once should have said what that was. They can't go to Saudi and cover up the space between the legs of the female staff "to respect the country thoughts" and then they destroy a christian religious statue on a MV :/:/ And i repeat...im an atheist from fudging Syria

I love all BTS albums, but the WINGS era was one of the most iconic.
I'll try to explain within what I know about what could be the reason behind the mother statue in this MV (remember, it's just my interpretation). There will be spoilers, but I will only highlight the J-hope part.
I don't know if what I'm going to explain can help you understand, but I can't miss the opportunity.
There are many representations that are used in the clips, and over time, they will improve their meaning within the B.U (BTS Universe - which is the fictional world created by the group, which revolves around theories and concepts interconnected with all the eras of the albums). ). For example, in the statue of the angel with black wings, which was only revealed years later with Black Swan.
In the Highlight Reel that was released in the Love Yourself era (2017), it shows that in B.U, J-hope was abandoned by his mother in a park, where his mother left him with a chocolate bar and asked him to tell it with his eyes closed. .and she disappeared into the crowd.
In the MV for I NEED U (released years before the L.Y era and consequent before this information above, in 2015) it shows him using medication compulsively, and after that, he passes out in the middle of a bridge, alone.
In WINGS (2016) we discover why. This Era has a short film for each member (because on this album each member has a solo). In J-hope's video, in a very psycholectic way and using metaphors and excerpts from Demian, the base book of this era (just watching to understand) is portrayed to us that he has Munchaüsen syndrome, which is a psychological disorder in which the person simulates symptoms or forces the appearance of diseases, encouraged by the use of medicines. And at the end of an outbreak, he sees a picture of a mother hugging a child... that's why he constantly appears next to the statue that appears to be the representation of Mary with her son in Blood, Sweet and Tears. It was the loss of innocence, of the lap, of faith (both religious, but not only in this one... in life itself)... and the beginning of her precipice towards madness, trauma of an abandoned child.
We can highlight his own solo in this album, which is called MAMA, where in his performance at the shows, in the final part, a choir appears (resembling a gospel choir) and on the screens he shows a colored window of a church, as if he really was in a temple, and in the lyrics, thanks for all the love from his mother (Apart from the theory part, J-hope composed this song for his mother who with many sacrifices encouraged him in his career, so it is truly a way of thanks and honor her), but also fits perfectly into the needs of the then character abandoned by her mother in her delirium.
And it is worth mentioning in the Mv of Fake Love (2018), J-hope is in a room with objects from an amusement park, the same place where he was abandoned, holding the same chocolatre that his mother gave him.
We still have the Web Toon "Save me" launched in 2019, where it goes in-depth in the form of a HQ all these and other theories around the boys. J-hope's is just one of those...
Everything in BTS' theories is so tightly tied together, conceptualized...it may take years, but they tell the story.
Loved your reaction, please continue (´▽`ʃ💜 ƪ)

I love how you dive deep into the songs ! BTS' videos need to be watched multiple times, especially this one, it's impossible to get everything by only watching it once ^^
RM talked about the meaning of this song, saying that it's about the passage between childhood and adulthood.
My interpretation of this is that, When we're children, we're innocent and protected by our environment. We learn from adults around us that we should only surround ourselves with "good" things. However when we become young adults and see the "real" world, we quickly realize that actually there is both the "good" and "evil", and the world can't existe without either of them. That's why here Jin kissed "Abraxas" the status representing the god of "light" and "darkness", meaning he now acknowledges both sides.
If you listen to the Wings album, you will see that the boys are exploring both their "dark" side, something they started in the previous era HYYH (the most beautiful moment in life) and You never walk alone.
Ultimately, this will lead to the love yourself series and the Map of the soul series. It's a journey where they discover their "real" selves.
There is an explanation video by Bookish Theories I think, that explains all the details from Demian, the paintings etc
PS: I apologize for any mistakes, since English is not my first language 😅

The black winged statue is Abraxos. And the cracking and destruction of Mary's, and then Jin's, faces has to do with the destruction of the light side of a person once they've succumbed to temptation/acquired knowledge/question their place in the world of light vs. the world of darkness. The old self cracks and crumbles away so that their new self can be born.

But I love your take and your anecdotes on the whole music video in general.
There is one thing no one really pointed out but after Jin kissed the depiction of Lucifer, the statue was seen crying from the right eye - which indicates happiness whereas Jimin is seen crying from his left eye which means sadness. It's so minuscule in the grand scheme of things but really, no detail should be missed when it comes to BigHit :). He's the one who had the wings in Black Swan and you can see it reflected back again after years. Hopefully one day you guys will watch the music video in the sequence of the BTS storyline. At it's basics, BS&T is telling the story, that in order to become a full human, you must recognise that there is both good and bad in this world and readily embrace that the world is not just roses and sunshine as often your innocent childhood will lead you to believe. To understand what it means to be truly human and to grow as a person and spread your wings, you can only have true flight if you recognise that even yourself, you have both good and bad within you, that you will wrestle with this a lot as you go through adolescence and twenties but will eventually settle on what you are comfortable with but the strict abstinence in one domain will never let you truly realise yourself as it denies the fundamentals of human existence. Kissing lucifer is just symbolism that we must accept both our bad sides and good sides to understand ourselves as a whole. This is why Jin cracks in the mirror in the final scene, he has now shed his one sided innocent self and has become a fully realised human. In our adolescence and young adulthood, we struggle a lot to find ourselves, who we are, people telling us we are wrong or bad, praising what society sees as good. The whole wings album and short films and live performances is amazing and beautiful storytelling. Excited to see you guys react. About Mary:
Considering their age, I think the song is about knowledge, struggles and growing up tearing down your innocence. So them kissing Lucifer (temptation, knowledge) is them pushing beyond established boundaries in search of themselves and their ambitions, and when that shatters their innocence and potentially their purity as artists, Mary, the mother figure, breaks, as they are no longer kids, but corrupted adults whose dreams have turned into ambition and are close to crossing onto greed. That is my read anyway!
I think this is supported by other songs by them. Suga’s solo work in particular grapples hard with greed vs healthy aspiration and creative impulse, and RM talks a lot about knowing himself and how he struggles to do that, a fight for authenticity towards himself and others. Something Suga also reflects by using multiple voices in his songs. Since the rapline have the most creative input, especially early on, imo my interpretation fits themes the group has covered both in their group music and their solo careers.
    I hope that makes sense!

Another awesome reaction video. This is my all time favourite song of theirs and it is so pleasing to see that you understand just how much work and effort BTS put into their songs and video's. You don't just take them on face value, you research the meanings behind the concepts and are always respectful of the artistry involved. Ignore the haters, there will always be those who try to be negative, just keep doing what you are doing and show us all awesome content :)

Really like your honest and open reactions. I did not realize you had received some negative comments last week. Very sorry about that.
WRT this video, I understand the statue is that of "Abraxas" (who is supposed to both a god and demon, hence only wings are black) and not that of "Lucifer" . But my knowledge is limited, there are explanation videos that can better explain this video better.

BTS said that this is a song about what do you do, who are you, when your artistic ability disappears. How do you redefine when your muse leaves you what do you have left. Hope this helps.

Enjoyed your review & analysis of Blood Sweat & Tears! I really think this song & video are a true masterpiece. The time it must have taken to put all of the visual references together is commendable. Kudos not only to BTS but the entire staff, crew, and production team for a brilliant job! 💜

    Lucifer was also a tempter
He tempted jin in which leads on for RMs reading from Damien. He too was a temper a link to the second.
The song is about the temptation of wanting more

Since you enjoyed this MV so much, you may enjoy checking out the Wings short films. I think it may give you a bit more insight into the Madonna statue as well. J-Hope's story in the BU involves his (fictional) mother who abandons him and so there are a few different symbols used to represent her and that loss. I'm not sure how directly you can link the Madonna statue breaking to that part of the story beyond it being this general loss of innocence, but there could be something more there.

Discussion and even disagreement are healthy parts of the fandom, hate is not.
I had some issues with the YtC reaction, but would never be disrespectful or hateful in the expression of that.
I enjoyed this reaction very much. Thank you for your thoughtfulness. There really is a lot to unpack from this song/mv.

My thoughts. I've been into this BTS rabbit hole since 2020. And as much as I love seeing reaction videos from everyone who appreciates BTS, I know (and we all know) some are just doing it to get views thus the fake reactions or over acting). So upon seeing your transition from "I have no idea who they are" to analyzing their videos, its not what everybody wants to hear but this is the content we need. Please don't hold back from your comments or comparisons. There's a thin line separating real fans from obsessed worshipers, many are overstepping the boundaries. And honestly I haven't heard a bad comment from you guys just constructive criticism. You guys are awesome!

I interpret this song in relation to their passion and how that turns into greed. They make music because of their passion but the greed takes over of being famous. The line “the grail was poisoned and i drank it anyway” speaks about how they know that being famous comes with its ill traits of wanting to have even more whether its money or fandom and there always comes a point in an artist’s life where they drink from that poisonous stardom. Which is what i feel that they are speaking about. All the imagery and references from damien and lucifer all correct but how for me it connects is that their own inner struggle of separating their passion from wanting to be drunk on that power/influence that comes with the stardom
I also interpret this in this way because BTS always tries to write songs of their own feelings that they have experienced in the past and they did speak about how for this video they wanted to look more consciously sexual to display the greed. Greed also probably isnt the correct word but I couldn’t find one that is more fitting
