- This sand flea is made of PLASTIC! I can't believe this is actually for sale. Today we will be beach fishing and testing a fake sand flea vs a real sand flea to see which will produce more fish. I have my guesses, but then again I'm always surprised when I am up against mother nature. Who knows what will happen!

I've been to beaches where there were thousands and the next day, nothing.
Haha I used to dig em up for fun, Santa Monica Beach always seems to be loaded with em.
In Indonesia we call this animal "undur undur".
we use soft ones for surf fishing bait.
Along the southern coast of Java. Top bait for all kinds of medium sized fish.
I’m still in the middle of your video, but you can’t run a test with a live sand flee at the bottom and the fake one on top. I hope you switch to having them on separate set ups and have a real outcome to compare.
that or change to the artificial on the bottom and the live on top, as it might have just been a case of fish biting at the lower depth.
Good video ,definitely seem very skewed towards live bait.I get that 100% live is going to get bit generally. I've caught plenty of fish on gulp sometimes better than live or fresh dead bait, but not always. I like to use the Gulp Amber Glow sand flea at beach and the Gulp sugar spice glow shrimp on a jighead. Hold them up to your head light to charge them up for some glow. Try out the shrimp on jig head some time. have a good one.

One of my favorite bait to use in Central Coast California is the sand flea. I do spend a good amount of time digging them up myself though

They make those gulp, sand fleas in natural colors too. They look just like the real thing. You should try another test with the realistic colors.

The issue is the lack of movement, artifical baits need to be fished actively. That sand flee is most definitely moving and trying to swim.

Hey, can you post how you make the lady fish balls and ingredients you used. Thanks a lot and more power to you.
Ingredients:
1 lb ladyfish meat
2.5 Tbsp Viet Huong fish sauce*
1 Tbsp vegetable oil
1/4 tsp black pepper
1/4 tsp white pepper
1.5 Tbsp cornstarch
1 Tbsp lemongrass powder
1/2 Tbsp minced garlic
1/2 Tbsp granulated sugar
1/2 cup chopped scallion
extra vegetable for frying
Notes: I recommend using anywhere from 2 to 2.5 tablespoon fish sauce per pound of ladyfish meat. Anything less would be a bit bland and more than that would be too salty.
Wearing a latex glove, mix the fish paste together as if you are kneading dough, folding and pressing down the paste, and repeat again for about two minutes or until all ingredients are combined evenly well in the fish paste.
Fry the fish cakes on medium or medium-high heat. Fry each side for about 2 to 3 minutes or until golden.
Don’t air fry makes them chewy & dry
I use only a stand mixer and don’t find a blender necessary

I think to have as fair of a comparison as possible, it's best to use as natural color of the artificial bait/lure as u can find.
That plus you have to work them and not just let them sit there. Most people I know Carolina rig them and slow retrieve them and catch plenty of fish with them.

In these types of comparison, for a more accurate comparison, you would also need to put the Gulp on the bottom and the real one on the top. Next, you only use the orange color. Gulp makes a more natural colored sand flea model. I would say the best comparison would be with the one the closely resembles the natural coloring, since fish are very color oriented when it comes to their common foods. I've had good success with the natural colored ones. I've never tried the orange or other unnatural colors.
I would be the Gulp would work a lot better with being actively reeled, in rather than sitting static like you can with live bait.
I'm not sure about ocean fishing, but I was taught Live bait = sit and wait, good smells, bugs move themselves. artificial = active casting, great for inducing a reaction with color and movement.
Maybe a different, more active set up with artificial and having the live ones sit on the bottom will produce efficient results ' u '
I've caught sand fleas south of St Augustine that were mostly red-orange and much bigger than the "regular" gray ones.

I fish all the time in the New Jersey shore, using fish bites and every time I go out, I catch a lot of fish like a few days ago. I had a 12 inch flounder.
I from west cost, its ok using sand flea for fishing on the surf. I did that all the time. I caught more fish. Soft shell even work better.

I use Berkley products, and i use live bait. Live bait always works better. (even recently alive bait works better) That being said, it is nice to have a backup plan just in case i can't catch/find live bait.
I use live sand fleas with a small piece of an orange balloon on the hook underneath the flea. If the fish can choose, a flea with eggs is tastier. Also, a fair test would be to alternate the positions of the bait. lower baited fleas get hit more often.
Any way you could post the recipe for the fish balls? I've always thrown the lady fish back or used them for bait!

@HeySkipper Gulp makes Artificial Sand Fleas that look more natural (color wise) wondering if you can try those and have better luck , due to the lack of movement I Recon they’d work better over a Piers Edge on a Sabiki set up … but… it’s quite possible with a more natural colored gulp sand flea and some scent additive you can possibly get the bites from shore line as well, just a suggestion , I’m new to the channel but glad I’ve subscribed love watching your content , also for location reference I’m located in the west coast so Pacific vs Atlantic Ocean where you are. I noticed you catched Pompano fish. May I asked what location of the city you caught those? I live in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. I never catch those type of fish in the pier. I find It pretty odd.

Look at the rod bend @ around 16:40. You miss the bite
It's the color and the smell. I don't think a vinegar smell, silicone smell, would attract fish and the the color is all wrong. If the a mottled gray/brown with a red/orange spot on the bottom, I think they would be more likely to attract a fish, oh and of course the smell, Gulp is going to have to find something that doesn't stink like silicone.
Gulp is made of "mostly biodegradable water-based resins" according to Berkley.
Fishing marketing is primarily about catching fishermen, not fish.
