darchon5 - I like Cousins but Smith works far better in our offense. Jay Gruden likes to go with the traditional mentality of running the football. In this offense, Kirk wouldn't be as proficient because he's never really been considered a "game manager" and turnovers are also much more costly. I think we took Smith to save money and paint an easy path for a rookie qb to come in, in a few years from now and of course bring in his winning history to possibly make it to the playoffs. If you've seen the contract negotiations, Cousins's life in DC has never really been certain. Edit: You can't just compare the two because they're completely different.
Ryan B Hi Ryan, my original response was to John, so I don't mean to bury you too. But some of your statements have issues to respond to, so let's go. And in case you're wondering, I've watched every snap of Kirk's career and have studied his numbers long before today. I'll respond point by point:
1. So you're arguing that Smith is a better fit for Gruden's offense because he's a game manager and Gruden prefers running the ball, while Kirk has always been a gunslinger? You're right that Smith is a game manager, but a bit off on the other points:
- In terms of Gruden's mentality, where's the evidence that he prefers the "traditional mentality of running the football"? So far this year they've run the 9th most (in terms of percentage) in the NFL, but they also have a rejuvenated AP. Previously under Gruden, they ranked 18th (before Kirk), 14th, 25th, 18th - an average of 18.8.
- To be complete, in Cincy as O-coordinator, they ranked 13th, 16th, and 12th. So that's a an average ranking of 15.6 in his 8 yrs as O coordinator & head coach. That's a balance, not exactly a run-first mentality - which I haven't heard that he is in interviews except when he's had game-managing qbs, like this yr and when Kirk started out in 2015.
2. "In this offense, Kirk wouldn't be as proficient..." Gruden hasn't overhauled his offense or personnel this yr, so comparisons can be made. And if anything, he's added better skill position players (Richardson over Pryor, AP over anyone, Reed & Thompson back from significant injuries). So is the following not proficient enough for you? In Kirk's 3 yrs under Gruden as a full time starter between 2015-17, he was:
- The only QB in the NFL who's had 4000+ yds, 25+ tds, 93+ rating in each of those seasons.
- In the top 3-4 in passing yds, completion %, yds/attempt, game-winning drives (11), and rushing tds (13). He was in the top 6 in passer rating and total tds.
- With a team that only produced 1 Pro Bowl appearance by any skill position player (RB, WR, TE). No tremendous talent supporting him - Reed was the Pro-Bowler and he could be argued, except that he missed almost half his games during those 3 yrs and played hurt for a bunch more.
3. Kirk has "never really been considered a 'game manager'", really? This statement calls into question whether you even followed the team until 2016, which is when he started to truly shed that label as he was improving and throwing for almost 5000 yds.
- McVay and Gruden had designed the offense before then to get him to do 1 or 2 quick reads, get the ball out, no audibling. They also did this in part because Kirk used to throw ints with more frequency between 2013-14.
- It was widely known and discussed in the media and by fans that Kirk was a game manager, including by the team, until Kirk's improvement caused the narrative to shift around 2016.
- Former GM McCloughan even less than a yr ago in his Kirk-isn't-special interview still was saying that you don't want to depend on Kirk throwing it a lot to win a game.
- Kirk himself in the 2015 season said he didn't mind being labeled a game manager.
4. "...and turnovers are also much more costly". Everyone agrees that Kirk could do with fewer turnovers. But, in Kirk's 3 yrs with you guys as full time starter, your run game was ranked 20th, 21st, and 28th, while your defense was ranked 28th, 28th, and 21st (he's the only QB in those 3 yrs other than Rodgers to make the playoffs at all with a below avg or worse run game & D). That means all the pressure was on him to do it himself almost every game without much support from the run game or D, and not much help from receivers either in 2017.
- Kirk has never been among the leaders in ints as a full time starter (15th, 15th, 7th, and 28th most ints, respectively), but he's been a leader in fumbles, for sure.
- However, the D and run game are supposed to help out so it's not always on the qb to win every game. Besides the terrible rankings above, here's how Kirk's defenses have ranked in takeaways: 14th, 17th, 23rd, 16th (17.5 avg) - not good.
5. I agree that partly they went with Smith to save money, but as it turns out, it's not much more. After his guarantees are up in 2020, Smith will be walking away with $71 million (if you cut him then). After 2020, Kirk will have $84M. That's a $13M over 3 yrs, $4.33M/yr. No one else would offer that big of an extension for a game manager, just like no one one was close to what they offered KC for Smith, a 3rd rd pick this yr and Fuller (best performing corner last yr) for a 34 yr old qb with 1 yr remaining on his contract.
6. You say part of the reason of going with Smith is to "paint an easy path for a rookie qb to come in" later. Smith signed a 5 yr deal with 3 guaranteed. Why do that in their plan for a franchise qb? Why not draft a qb this yr (Jackson or Rudolph) or trade up (for Darnold or Rosen)? The experts considered this yr one of the strongest for qb classes. You'd also have kept Fuller & the 3rd round pick that way.
7. "Cousins's life in DC has never really been certain". Not sure if you're implying that it's Kirk's fault or not, but if you're a diehard fan of the team who's not in the tank for Snyder & Allen, then you would know the details about how they gave little reason for Kirk to want to stay long-term.
- This includes lowballing him twice to never showed that they truly thought of him as their guy (such as the Snyder locker room incident with RG3, Allen throwing Kirk under the bus in 2017, Gruden singling out only Kirk for their record after 2017).
- The 'worst' that Kirk can rightfully be blamed for on this one is that he dared not to sign a below-market deal in 2015 & 2016, and decided in 2017 to wait until free agency, after the team never made an attempt to offer him anything close to market value (Smith's extension of $23.5M/yr was more than the rumored $22-23M/yr highest offer to Kirk).
- The proof is in the pudding: in 2018, Kirk took the Vikings' $28M/yr offer, with the Jets and Cardinals both having offered around $30M/yr. If Kirk was being 'greedy', as the team and some fans implied, then his free agency results would've seen much lower numbers. But he ended up getting paid what he correctly thought he was worth, which btw is in the range of what media gurus had predicted.
8. You say we "can't just compare the two because they're completely different", yet that's what you basically did. And that didn't stop quite a few in your fanbase and also local media and former players from saying that Smith is a better version of Kirk. The Post called them interchangeable except for turnovers. Darrell Green said Smith is Kirk's older brother. I do think they're different, yet can still be compared. Sorry but that's a cop out. RG3 & Kirk were as different as can be, and as I'm sure you remember, they were compared constantly between 2013-15. But, I tried to honor your wishes here, and this post is long enough already. But I can really delve into a qb comparison too if need be.
