    Great videos!
Did you know Simpson makes a adjustable hingepoint hanger instead of cutting a notch in your stringer?

1:45 mark: I can tell you (and you know) that using a piece of plywood to attach stairs to a deck will fail. Im dealing with this issue now thanks to our scab building contractor who cut corners all over the place while constructing our home. The issue i face is the deck rails are screwed into the concrete pad at the bottom of the stairs and the ledger is used at the top of the stairs to connect to the deck because the stringer isnt long enough to actually connect to the deck itself. It looks like Im going to have to add a support to the deck header beam and then use hangers.

Bummer, it's always difficult to deal with problems like these.

This is always "the" issue for deck stairs and or deck landings. I will almost always make the outside stringers a full board with cleats. This way you have a good contact with the deck joist. Thank you for your videos

Hi, Love your channel ! Do you have a video on building outside stairs going up to the roof ? ( slump block exterior w/ flat roof )

Glad you like your channel and no I don't have any videos on masonry stairs. If this didn't answer your question, feel free to provide me with more details or email me a picture of the type of stairs you're referring to. You can get our email address at our website.

@@stairbuilding Hi, I was explaining that the house is masonry slump block ( it was not stated ). My house is slump block . It is one story.. I do not have much money so i want to build the steps myself with a friend.

I would simply have cut my stringers longer such that the top-most segment tucks under that edge joist, to align with the four floor joists and bonds to those. Also, if you're going with the setup shown in this video, Simpson makes some really good "stair ties" expressly for tying them into an end or rim board.

I always rest my joists on the beams...That's a no brainer. Joist hangers are for rookies who don't know how to build. Decks and stairs should be built, not hung on a handful of fasteners....
When I make a set of stairs to the deck I always make the top stair tread an extension of the deck surface. That way I get full bearing of the stringer ends on the rim joist without any wood sandwiches to trap water and rot. Sure there is one more tread and riser on my stairs but I won't be rebuilding the stairs in a couple of years because the wood is rotten or a stringer hanger has rusted away or the nails loosened up in the soggy wood.
I see deck stairs built all the time with only an inch of the stringers bearing on the rim joist just so they can save one tread and one riser.
    It's scary!

Making an extra stair or an "extension of the deck" is a sure sign of a bad carpenter

@@jackfarrell4727 OK. Why is that? That seems like a very intuitive way to solve the problem here. I am a DIYer. I want to change the pitch of my deck stairs that need to be replaced anyway. I will not need to make any extension like was suggested.
