I always loved Bruno's song. Neil and Babs song to. I really wish that Miley and Bruno would do a duet of these songs.

@@Kowalski301 it's not about the lyrics at all. when i first heard it I could hear the original's melody. the clever thing she did was taking words from the chorus and singing it in the melody of the opening lines of Bruno's song. I'm not an English speaker. I didn't know what she was singing about but still i could hear the similarities because of the melody.
It is definitely an interpolation. I assumed Mars was credited and am just now learning he's not.

There have been countless times when she didn’t even have to legally give someone a credit but she did to avoid backlash and she still gets it. She chose her lyrics to be a response to "When I was your man" because Liam had once dedicated that song to her. So, yes, the songs are directly related.

Read the lyrics of Bruno Mars' "When I Was Your Man".. . The lyrics of "Flowers" is quite literally a side-by-side direct response to the lyrics of the Mars song.
Ex. He says "I should have bought you flowers "....her lyrics "I can buy my own flowers". He says "I should have held your hand", she says "I can hold my own hand". The list goes on.

@@williamrandolph1566 It's actually a contradiction of Bruno's song that's why I could not connect Flowers to that song. Bruno's song depicts a man that did nothing but heartache to her woman. Liam dedicated that song to Miley so it proved that he had a lot of shortcomings during their relationship. Whereas Flowers is empowering a woman that suffered a breakup.

Bruno's song is about a man who went through a break-up, realized afterwards he made a big mistake, and was trying to apologize by telling her all the things he should have done when he was her man. Miley's lyrics are a direct response to the break-up described through the pleas in Bruno's song,....saying that she doesn't need the man described in this song or his flowers.
I didn't even know the back-story about Liam when I heard "Flowers" and I immediately made the connection the second I heard Miley's song. It was so blatantly obvious, I am still amazed people somehow couldn't make the obvious connection.
