    Correction: M&Ms are like Smarties. In fact, they're directly based on Smarties, which one of the bothers who created M&Ms discovered on a trip to Europe.
    M&Ms are literally an American version of Smarties.

    • @DaveBartlett

      It was Forest Mars, (son of Frank C Mars, founder of the Mars Company,) who, during the Spanish Civil War in the '30s, spotted British born soldiers eating Smarties and decided to copy them. Like a decent American, he went over there to fight for freedom, and then like a typical American, he decided that he'd be better off plagiarising one of our established sweets.

    It’s interesting that the three you either didn’t like or hated were all Fry’s bars. I am surprised that you hadn’t heard of Turkish Delight. The Fry’s bar was an attempt to capture the exoticism of the traditional Persian confection of that name. Turkish Delight is known to have been around since the 18th century, often flavoured with rose water, bergamot and lemon. Additionally traditional Turkish Delight often has nuts, such as pistachios added to it. The bland gel filling of the Fry’s bar that you sampled has very little in common with the real thing. (See the Wikipedia page on Turkish Delight)

    • @artgreen6915
      @artgreen6915 Před 7 měsíci

      Yes! Get the stuff with nuts in. Or a mixed box of rose, pistachio and lemon.
      The extra bits of the nut combining with the sweetness yet contrasting with the gelatinous texture and adding a slight hint of savouriness. WAY more sophisticated, not often mentioned. Plenty of boxes of this on the shelves in Turkey.

    Tunnocks Tea Cakes are actually Scottish and are a short digestive type biscuit (not a cookie) with a marshmallow dome, and covered in either Milk (the most common) or Dark Chocolate. Tunnocks can barely keep production at pace with demand. They are a National Treasure! Tunnocks also make a Caramel Wafer bar also covered with either Milk or Dark Chocolate and are just as good.
    Aero & Cadbury chocolate bars are the standards by which everything is measured.
    Maltesers are known to be fought over and also come in either Milk or Dark Chocolate.

    The reason Flake and Aero are so good is that the main chocolate taste you get isn't on your tongue, it's in your nose. Aerating the chocolate gives more surface area for the unstable elements which you smell as "chocolate" to leave the bar and enter the air in your mouth and, eventually, your nose. So: you get a bigger chocolate "hit".

Decades ago you could smell the chocolate and caramel hovering over the place but that pleasure has largely gone. Every Friday the workers including my mum used to bring a paper bag full of Caramel Wafers, supposedly broken biscuits but there was nothing wrong with them. They had no wrappers and tasted better than the ones in the shops. The Tea Cake is unofficially Scotland's favourite home made sweet.

    Hi Q.B., I think you were thinking of the song, (Afternoon Delight) by the Starland Vocal Band from 1976. I like Fry`s Turkish Delight personally but it is rather like Marmite for people`s reactions to it. The Jelly is rose-scented flavour, I had Rosehip Syrup as a baby, so I think that is why I have a liking for it.
    I do not however like traditional turkish delight, (white & pink cubes) such as that offered by the White Witch in the Narnia Chronicles. I also love Maltesers, again I had Horlicks tablets as a child & I think that made me predisposed to them. I`m glad you enjoyed these more than the previous British items. :)
