Katie Ridder and Peter Pennoyer's Millbrook, New York, home is a serene retreat that reflects their deep expertise in interior design and architecture. Tucked away on six secluded acres, the property offers a peaceful escape from the couple's busy professional lives in Manhattan. Surrounded by expansive farmland, the home is a haven of tranquility, where the pace of life slows, and the natural beauty of the Hudson Valley takes center stage.
The house, a striking square-shaped structure, is the first that Pennoyer, a celebrated architect, has ever designed and built for himself. His affinity for Greek Revival architecture is evident in the home's classical design, which features fluted Tuscan columns and intricate foliate reliefs. Each of the four facades of the house is unique, yet they all maintain a sense of symmetry and balance, creating a harmonious and cohesive design. The front entrance, framed by elegant columns, leads into a home that is both traditional in its architectural roots and innovative in its execution.
When it came time to decorate, Ridder, a renowned interior designer, took charge. Known for her bold use of color and pattern, Ridder infused the interiors with her signature style, creating a richly layered environment that is both lively and sophisticated. The living room is a prime example, anchored by a vintage Oushak rug that once belonged to tastemaker Dodie Rosekrans. This cheerful rug sets the tone for the room, which is further warmed by walls lined with rosy tea paper. Ridder’s approach to the home’s decor involved experimenting with new colors and patterns, resulting in a visually dynamic yet cohesive interior.
The dining room, for instance, is painted in a high-gloss mulberry, creating a striking and dramatic space. The entryway features lilac hexagonal floor tiles, introducing guests to the home’s playful yet elegant aesthetic from the moment they enter. The stairwell is another highlight, adorned with blue-and-white sgraffito-inspired wallpaper that adds a whimsical touch to the transition between floors.
Textiles are a major feature in the home, with each room showcasing a different array of fabrics. The living room's mossy-green linen curtains, trimmed with a graphic border and wood-bead accents, create a cozy and inviting atmosphere, while the study is enlivened by botanical Swedish fabric.
Outside, Ridder's passion for gardening is evident in the lush gardens that surround the home. Inspired by the gardens at Wave Hill in the Bronx, the flower beds are a vibrant mix of shrubs and petite annuals. The vegetable garden, located near the barn, is equally abundant, yielding crops like rhubarb, kale, potatoes, and lettuce that sustain the family throughout the growing season. Enjoy!

oh my goodness what an incredible home. the architect is such a dear soul. he completely won me over when he told the story about the beautiful sky light he designed and then said the stars were just vinyl stickers that he put on himself as an arts and crafts project! i mean, how sweet!!!! what a cute couple! beautiful meaningful home

I collect a lot of antiques and I appreciated all the details in the creation of the house and how she decorated around the many pieces of dark furniture- bringing in color, the different collections, even taxidermy- love the garden- dreamy.

I think this house is so special! I wish I could live in a place like that..absolutely fantastic architectural design! Ever since I saw it on another home tour they did years ago, Ive not been able to find something equal or more beautiful than this house. Its just a very rare gem! I noticed the turtle wall paper right away ❤ Looking forward to looking at the whole LINE, the graphics, scale, tonality looks super liveable. I have only made it 9 minutes in...but I know it is going to be a favorite tour, because the designer got to make and stick to her own instinctive choices, and they chose so much of their furnishings at Auction. It is the result of super eclectic choices, choosing the best of, and what could work, from what is offered....that is how I end up choosing things. for real, I do enjoy and appreciate seeing all-custom work, and the need for custom work, but I really love collected, put-together interiors the best.
OK to be fair, the VERY FIRST thing I noticed was how delightful the shape and mass and proportions were of the house, it looks like a little mid-1800s bank, and has the suprising oversized windows of old, old places up in the Maritimes, up Nova Scotia way. I saw the house in the drone shot and how quirky it was and thought "Oh YAY, they SAVED it!" because I always worry about the quirky, Old, Old, OLD places...I do not like to see all that art lost! But here it is, ideas seen and saved, reborn! WOW! I hope many clients step up and more get built! I love this home!

I love Katie Ridder and her use of color. Her book "Rooms" was gifted to me by my husband for Christmas one year and I believe that was my first real interior design book. And how lucky is she to be married to an architect!

I really enjoy these two. Their house is wonderful,I bought the book they put out celebrating this home, lots of great pictures and so many ideas! Do you know how many times I tried to wipe that bug/spot off my iPad screen….it was on your end! Oh well!
Love, love the doves and I will be copying that styling of my ceramic collections. The darkest room is stunning. So many compliments I could say, love so much. (I feel so bad for the camera person who had a chewing out about the dust particle.)

Loved this place - they did a great job. Love their angle on things. Love the Coney Island aquarium props framing the sink, love the purple tiled entry, the needlepoint, the light cream/pink/peach living room walls (all the colors and fabrics in that room - the bullet-hole lampshade, too!). Love hearing about their design decisions and life. Great kitchen and island/pots solution, too. I used to live on Lexington and 71st and can visualize where her old store was. Super great area, as is Millbrook.

I'm delighted to see colors again. Interior design has become so bland and colorless the last 20 years. I dislike so much of it. But this is lovely. ☺
