When you did your first video you inspired me to go and play with what I had in the garden and although most trees have had a slow year this one has begun to take its shape.
I learnt the hard way that bougainvillea breaks easily. Luckily it was only a branch that broke off and a new shoot grew from the break and created a bend naturally.

Nice hot and sunny here in Jozi we could go with some rain, please send it up this way when you done ; ). This season is crazy our side some trees 6/8weeks early on the budding and no rain. Again no real winter like we used to get. Currently 24c before 11am , we have had snow here this time of year a few years back crazy times.
Ayyy also in rainy cape Town Today.
There is a very nice shop called "little shop of bonsai" in Cape Town that's the guy that taught me what I know, if you haven't already you should maybe go check him out, he also have some very nice material for good prices, I like to go there every now and then

I have a dozen pieces of driftwood and a few junipers to try. Keep swapping them around to find something I like.

Great demonstration. I love my Tridents, but my Junipers need so much attention, I am at a loss, and demonstrations like this help me to try to come up with visualizations for possibilities.
I only wish my Shimpaku's would fill out much, much more so I could possibly restyle them and find a more creative way of showing them off. Thanks Peter!!

Thanks So Much Mr.Chan. where we live we have an abundance of ground juniper and Ponderosa Pine and Spruce and I have THROUGHLY enjoyed your videos of the different ways you can make Bonsai with Conifers. I have a larger Juniper that I was wanting to do something special with because it was already growing in such a way that it will be PERFECT for a "Tanuki" Juniper Bonsai. We also have a huge abundance of dried hard as iron root wood from Spruce and Pines that will make PERFECT TANUKI structure...I can hardly wait to go out and collect a bunch to find just the perfect match for my first "Tanuki"

We have a Variety of Spruce that grows no where else but our Mountains here it's called Aptly enough, Black Hills Spruce. It's so easy to work with and remains very flexible clear up to 1" or sometimes bigger Branch or Trunk. Sure wish I could send you some seedlings to grow and see how you like them but I have NO IDEA what is required to ship them outside the United States ?

Another great video. I have seen a very nice example of this with a olive on a big "stump/trunk" . Remember if your cable ties are too short you can link them up to get the size you need, just put on end into another just a little way until it bites.

weather here in wesdtern canada temperatures got to nearly 50 celcius. So many garden trees and municipal trees died from the drought and intense heat. Watering was 4-6 times a day sometimes.

I always have my eye out for juniperus virginiana Eastern red cedar driftwood. I have carried substantial pieces 50+ lbs a mile or more to make tanuki.

I’m back on the side of the mountains of Colorado where beautiful bonsai style trees grow in by the thousands all on there own. I only wish I could make my trees as beautiful.
I have heard about the pines and junipers that grow there. Wish I could visit one day.

I’m running into the problem Peter mentions, I have an eastern red ceder and a piece of driftwood but the tree is much too small for the wood, so I’m hoping that the tree will work with the wood after it’s grown a little
even if a tanuki failed, one can make tanuki using falied tanuki

Tamuki are tricksters and visually tricking the eye by marring a living tree to dead wood is indeed a good trick.

Very nice sir. Is there any reason that you used cable ties instead of wiring the tree to the dead wood? Cost is what I suppose. At any rate, another fine video and of course a fantastic shirt!

Instead of a deadwood can a craggy rock or a small boulder be used for tanuki?

As it is "fake" some bare thickish branch, burn a track of char in a crevice in the branch, lightly knock out the loose char. Saw it done once, on a slope. Looked like an old lightning strike or old forest fire damage on the side of a mountain.
Could I soak a nice pice off soft wood in epoxy and use that for tanuki cause the expoy would make the would long lasting 🤔

Love Peter and love all the wonderful work! But I’m fairly sure in the last few videos the audio has been peaking more or less throughout, and they’re hard to watch! Of course, not hard enough to watch that I don’t watch… but maybe go back to the rhode Wireless system you had before?

Tanuku is a raccoon dog. A kind of wild dog.
I think the Tanuki's were wonderful creatures because they had GIGANTIC testicles and look funny. The trees are nice too.
