Artificial Disc Replacement Solves New Jersey Man's Back Pain

- Dominick Pace had a partial discectomy to help soothe the pain caused by a herniated disc in 2014. But that surgery provided only temporary relief for his decade-long battle with back pain. Dominick then turned to Gino Chiappetta, MD, an orthopedic surgeon at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, for a more permanent solution. Dr. Chiappetta performed an artificial disc replacement and soon after the surgery, Dominick was back to his favorite activities - pain free.

I'm 40 years old, I went to Germany for a 3 level disc replacement in October of 2019. They used the M-6 disc, these discs are far ahead in design and function than what was previously used. They respond to movement and restriction almost exactly like the human disc. I had a great experience, 5 days after surgery I was walking 10,000 plus steps per day, once home I continued to walk, stretch and slowly exercise. I was playing non-contact hockey by January 1 of 2020. I feel great. My lower back feels like it did at age 20. Based on my experience I would recommend anyone with chronic back pain to consider artificial disc replacement, but with none other than the M-6 disc, unless a newer better one is available. Today I am fully functional, no pain. The only thing I am working on today, is to improve is my flexibility. I had back pain for 15 years and lost flexibility due to extreme pain, and 3 failing discs. The doc and physiotherapist said in time flexibility comes back. Do not settle for spine fusion, do not get back surgery today unless they are using the M-6 disc or something newer and better...as far as I know this is the most recent disc development in spine technology.
what's the cost for 3 level?
@@stefankalafior The total cost was 36,000.00 euro. Flights are extra.
@@henrykrahn2618 I am also over 40 and I'm scared that sooner or later I will need this done also
@@stefankalafior Once the disc is ruptured and touching the nerves it never gets better. There are only times where the pain is less and you learn to live with it. The longer a person waits, the more difficult surgery can be, and the longer it takes to recover from the surgery. After my surgery I was 1 inch taller than before, I was back to my height at age 18. But that stretching can cause muscle, ligament and tendon pain because everything is suddenly being stretched. Sooner than later is better.
Great story man so glad to hear! I need it done
I've been doing pain management for 20 years now. I've never had a fusion or surgery done. I've been waiting patiently for the technology to advance. The risks terrify me though.
good buddy, i don't think it's going to advance to an adequate enough level in our lifetime. it seems that at best it's just buying time and still resigning yourself to the fact that you won't be able to do the things you have done before your injury
Wish I had known
I watched a video from 2011 that compared fusion to disk replacement and the cons of replacement were in the technology of the prostheses. It has movement but the doctor said it didn't have the second aspect of a real disc which is the ability to restrict movement. I'm wondering if the technology is better now where that's not an issue?
the ability to restrict movement???
@@fallback8314 yes supposedly restricting certain movement is key I'm assuming it's undesired or unnatural movement. A real disk only allows for a certain range of motion and the prosthetic doesn't have that. Therefore making it much worse
Alslamu Alikum, what is the prostheses used in the surgery? is it mobi-c like the one used for cervical disc replacement?
I'm kind of interested in this question as well.
I did fusion but did not work, artificial disk realy works?
Hi don where did you have this done my disc burst backwards severed my nerves to my bladder and bowels say no more , I struggle every day with my bowels I can’t live like this
Only ten months?! I've been suffering for years and Kaiser Permanente can't help besides fuse bone together! Amazing
Fusion isn't that bad for l5/s1
45 more days until I go to Germany for two level lumbar job. I can’t wait.
Mike Young I’d love to hear your updates!
Do u hav to be rich for that? I’m from the states lol
Chad Cummins About $65,000 Canadian dollars.
Very expensive yes. I have taken loans and started a GoFundMe. It’s worth it for me considering for many years I’ve been in so much pain I can’t hardly walk, take care of my young kids or work etc. Ive had two micro discectomy surgery’s which haven’t done much.
Artificial disc replacement surgery is not done in Canada.
Mike Young I really hope it works out for you. I have a herniated disc l5-S1 and don’t want a fusion because of the bad things I hear about it. I would love a disc replacement to hopefully finally relieve pain. Let me know how it goes
Chad Cummins Indeed. I’m replacing l5-S1 and L4-L5. I no longer want discectomies performed on me. They cause scaring which often makes impingement worse, even causing scar tissue to bind to the nerve roots. Removing disc material has caused them to collapse. The geometry of the joints are bad, facet joints are now stressed causing arthritis and spurs etc.
I too am afraid of fusion. I’m also (was) extremely athletic and don’t like the idea of all that hardware (screws, pins, rods etc). I do like the idea of the ADR implants being able to move. Some even have shock absorbers !
I had an artificial disc replacement in May 2018, but I can't
walk and I can't go out.
It's been a year and 10 months, and it's not getting better and it's been
suffering from severe side effects.
In my country, I can't find a doctor who can fix it, but I really want someone
to help me.
Talk with this doctor and hope by next year you can get fixed. Good luck!
I’m so sorry love I’m waiting to have this done I think it’s in America
Where did you have this done love

I had surgery at this hospital, and other hospitals have the same attitude.
South Korea is currently in a medical war and I can't afford to be treated abroad.
I think doctors have misselected the president of the Medical Association so that patients can do nothing in the event of a medical accident.
KMA'president is czcams.com/video/5Qc-YnhvZNQ/video.html
In my country, doctors are like politicians.
It's been more than two years and three months since I suffered from this post-op, All I can do is sigh.
