- Americans are in mourning after 29-year old Omar Mateen walked into a gay nightclub in Orlando and shot 49 people dead. The alarming frequency with which mass shootings occur in the U.S. does little to blunt the trauma of each act.
But the facts of the case raise uncomfortable questions for those who seek to defend the country's gun laws. Mateen carried out the bloodiest mass shooting in recent history despite being on the FBI's radar.
He was investigated at least twice for suspected ISIL sympathies. But had no trouble buying a military-style assault rifle. A weapon that has been used in several mass shootings in the U.S.
The number of gun-related deaths in the U.S. are high, especially when compared to the rest of the world. Americans make up less than five percent of the global population, but they own more than 40 percent of the world's guns.
But why is it easy to access and own guns in the U.S.? And what's preventing change to laws on gun ownership?

Someone without enough evidence against them to arrest and charge them for a crime should not lose constitutional rights. Gun ownership is a right., flying on an airplane is a privilege.

If you try to get rid of the gun show so called loophole then you would have to register all guns. That is basically confiscation.
Would have liked if the moderator clarified some of the empirical points being made on each side, to strip the facts of their biases. Instead there were a lot of questions that felt repeated rather than pressed

Leah Gunn Barrett has incorrect facts on firearms, namely the Ar15. It is not the same as an M16 or M4. It cannot pop off 30-40 rounds in a matter of seconds on semi auto. And it is actually a modern sporting rifle. Just look at IPSC 3-Gun. Also different projectiles do different things and hollow point projectiles do tend not to go straight through, but i can't see somebody being shot in the ankle and it splitting the spleen. She needs to check her facts a little. Whether you are for gun control or not, you cannot go from her arguments, because they are uninformed. A lot like Donald Trumps. The presenter also says "semi-atomic rifles" in one sentence.
This woman has no idea what she's talking about. An AR-15 is not identical to an M-16. M-16s are either 3-round burst or fully auto. Ar-15s are only semi-automatic.
Also, gun sales are not on the decline. During the Obama administration, the estimated number of guns in the country (calculated by sales) rose from 250 million to 350 million. They started keeping track in 1900. So she literally has no idea what she's talking about.

We need guns to fight government suppression. Being in the police or military should not give you special rights to bear larger arms and to kill without any percussion.

Her stats include suicide by gun. If you look at per capita rates of gun homicide the US looks much more reasonable. Also if you look at per capita rates of gun death at mass shootings the US ranks below countries like Norway even. Check out data from the Crime Prevention Research center.
