    The God Machine was a rock band active in the first half of the 1990s. Its members were all from San Diego, California, U.S., but they all lived and performed mainly in the United Kingdom. Subsequently, they were one of the few foreign acts to play at the short-lived Repre club in the Obecni dum in Prague
    The band consisted of three members, Robin Proper-Sheppard (born Gary Sheppard) (guitar/vocals), Jimmy Fernandez (bass) and Ronald Austin (drums), and they first performed officially under the name The God Machine in 1991. They released an EP, Purity with the record label Eve, and were later given contracts with the label Fiction. They released two albums in their career, both with their trademark dark and industrial-sounding alternative rock, before Jimmy Fernandez suddenly died from a cancerous brain tumour. Robin went on to form The Flower Shop Recordings label, and bands Sophia and The May Queens.
    Their second album, One Last Laugh in a Place of Dying, was recognized by Alternative Press as one of the "90 greatest albums of the 90s" (#88) in their December 1998 issue.
    Their San Diego incarnation was called Society Line and also featured guitarist Albert Amman, who left the band before its move to London.

    It is indeed a masterpiece of an album. Yet it still keeps getting overlooked. The music press raited it highly upon release. A lost treasure of the 90’s. It deserves so much more recognition.

    Was lucky to see them in Amsterdam at the Paradiso in 93. Someone needs to compile everything and put out a discography on vinyl.

    I used to find this album hard to play at times, not because I did not like it, in fact the opposite, the raw intensity, the depth, never easy to digest but so rewarding.

    This band was so good that I not even mentioned it to my best friends. I was afraid that they would never understand the greatness of it. I actually met Robin after a Sophia show in stockholm. Nice dude! Number one record of all time!!!!!!

    While I spent the Nineties throwing myself around to Mega City Four, Senseless Things, Leatherface and the like, I saw The God Machine many times and they were really very good. Excellent two albums.

MAGNIFIQUE !!

    God Machine was a band before its time and mis-understood. Glad they had success overseas. I picked up Scenes from the Second Story by chance in a record store 8 years ago and have been a fan since then. Everyone i ever ask here in the USA have never heard of them, their loss. So now i let them rip copies of my two cd's or point them to youtube.
    Thanks for keeping God Machine - Alive in music

    Achingly sad and beautiful at the same time. While I'm truly grateful for the music they left us, I really believe their third album would have been their zenith; however, what they left us was and still is some of the greatest music ever written.

    Exceptional musicianship. With all the tragic losses over the years, life can have real gravity at times. First listened to this in July, 1994, whilst visiting someone who had a top floor flat overlooking the city of Bath. Left me speechless, for hours...

      Sono d'accordo, il secondo album è tristissimo, purtroppo x ovvi motivi. Anche il progetto Sophia di Sheppard mi piace molto, pur non suonando come i God. Ma l'essenza è quella

    • @licantropia1512
      @licantropia1512 Před 6 měsíci

      @@marcopassoni2996 il secondo album forse non era nemmeno completato. Non lo so. Ovviamente era un momento difficile. Però nel secondo trovo pochi brani che mi convincono. ( Almeno per me). In bad Dreams stupenda. Ma non è tanto per la tristezza (che c'è) è per lo stile meno insolito, meno cattedralico, meno simbolico, meno corale,meno imprevedibile....oserei dire più commerciale. Sophia onestamente non è minimamente i God. È un altro mondo che non mi fa impazzire. Scenes from the Second Storey resta qualcosa di indimenticabile e piuttosto unico. Vanta di un universo misterioso e profondo. Lodato, ma non abbastanza. Ma è uno tra i dischi più importanti della musica. Forse, e dico forse, Fernandez era assai importante per le canzoni. R.i.p.
