    This video was so helpful !! I've recently been interesting in majoring in journalism. I've been reading articles from the New York Times and analyzing them; I realized that that's the company I would like to work for one day. I wanna start doing my own stories, but am not sure how to go out and do them. If there's any advice you could give for that, I would greatly appreciate itxx

    • @FernDaily
      @FernDaily  Před 6 lety +41

      Hey! I'm so glad it was useful. That's incredible! Full steam ahead and you'll get there I'm sure. Okay so I'm assuming you mean written stories.
      First, just an overall tip, the most incredible stories I have found is by asking people lots of questions about their lives. Everyone has a story, that's what makes Humans of New York so good. But if you want to ease yourself in try and do the following:
      1. have a reliable recording device, a note pad and a pen
      2. look up a local event happening in your area (for example a gay pride rally)
      3. when you're there get quotes from three sources (for example a protester, a political figure and an organiser)
      4. note what time they say something on the recorder that would be a good quote and write down that time stamp (saves sooo much time)
      5. make sure before you leave you have the basic facts - who, what, when, where
      6. write the story based off a 400 word article from a regular news site
      - look at how they spell certain things, how they quote people, what grammar systems they use (many publications vary)
      7. get it proof read and put it in your online portfolio

      @FernDaily  Před 6 lety +5

      Casie x i think that in journalism you do talk to be people quite often. But with photo journalism there may be less of this because, depending on what your shooting, you may not have to ask their permission. I recomend emailing a photo journalist that works with a local publication and seeing if they'd be willing to have a coffee and chat about it. The photo journalism i have done didn't involve a lot of talking but I'm just one source xxxx

      Yes Journalism can be hard but i wanted to help you out and share a few things with you. Several years ago I took TV production course as part of my Journalism major and what I learned I can give you a few pieces of advice. One network with news anchors, reporters and others in the news business. Secondly, contact a news station near you and see if you can get a tour of the tv studio as well as intern . And lastly, someone once told me who worked as a tv meteorologist he said to me work hard, study hard and never give up if meteorology is what i really wanted. So for you if Journalism is what you want keep following your dream. Good luck.

    I have been dreaming of becoming a science journalist ever since I discovered my passion in writing, like I am really piqued by ideas that Journalist in the discovery channel have or the clips from the national Geographic channel. Also I often research on things that intrigues me, so highly that I think I can write an article about them. In fact I really enjoy campus journalism in my school because it brought and stretched out the inner passion within me. But there's this problem that I am currently facing. I can't find any college that offers journalism course in my city. And I'm really struggling to find a better alternative for my passion. I have to do something the spring is just next few months.

    Hi, I just came across your account and journalism videos and love your insight. I am in college and I'm curious about how to go about freelance journalism/writing stories on my own like you suggest. When talking to sources, who do I say I am with? Some sources don't like to talk to a reporter without a good enough platform/newspaper. It can be hard to get solid freelance positions so I'd like to learn more about navigating this independently. Thanks!
