  • In this video I get into a misfire and check engine light on this 1997 Nissan Altima. The misfire codes are P0100 MAF sensor, P0325 Knock Sensor, and P0304 Misfire cylinder #4. The engine also runs rough at idle. I go through the steps of it's diagnosis, find the problem, and come back after the repair. The actual repair of this vehicle will take place in another video (next week), this video covers how I found out what was wrong with this Altima. Engine performance issues can be tricky to nail down but with a little time, patients, and some diagnostic know how, I'm sure you'll be able to overcome any engine performance issue.

    Eric, thanks for taking us through your troubleshooting process and not editing out the dead ends. It's not always easy to tell what's causing a problem. You shouldn't apologize for heading down the wrong path initially, especially when making a video about it. It is very educational for newbies like me to know the different things we should be checking for.

    Don't feel bad. I can't tell you how many times I've went way far in depth trying to diagnose a misfire/air pump, etc.
    Sometimes the most obvious solution is the one over looked. No harm in looking at the entire system as a whole and testing/verifying each individual component. This video was a great learning tool for me as it was for everyone else.
    Keep up the great work!

    I absolutely love this video! My 2000 Nissan Quest is throwing exactly these codes (except the misfire code is for a different cylinder). I have done a number of things so far, such as replacing the distributor, ran the fuel injector cleaner, cleaned the throttle, replaced the fuel filter and air filter. The problem is still there. This video provides many great tips and tactics to think about what to try next.

    I think this is a very good video to put up Eric because it shows the challenges a technician faces trying to diagnose a problem and all the possibilities they can be. It also illustrates how important it is to look at all possibilities before you start throwing expensive parts at it. A lesser tech would have just installed new injectors and then the customer would eat that without a resolution to their problem.

    Eric, I'd like to share with you some things I discovered in my endeavors with this exact same car experiencing the EXACT same problem. I really think it'd be a GREAT addition to this video because the majority of the viewers watching this video are working on high mileage cars versus the lower mileage car featured in this video. After going through regular diagnostics, and replacing the standard tune-up parts, I determined my intake gasket was leaking as well. After a timely job of replacing it as you know, I also replaced both egr valve gaskets (top and bottom) , the egr inlet tube gasket located on cyl 4, and the throttle body gasket. I started her up and it purred like a kitten..... For about 5 mins. Then it went right back to missing at idle. Under load driving was greatly improved but under 2k you could feel the miss and I was not happy. I pretty much went back through the entire diagnostic process trying to eliminate things. Long story short,

    • @Grescht
      @Grescht Před 8 lety

      When I replaced the intake mani gaskets I did not fully remove either half of the manifold from the car, I just separated them enough to get the job done. What ended up happening was during this process I managed to loosen some carbon somewhere in the egr passages because they were absolutely FULL of it and a chunk of carbon made its way into my egr valve which made it unable to close. This happened five minutes after it started and was running perfect. It had all the symptoms of a vacuum leak. I think you should add a note to the video really stressing the importance of full removal of the manifold so you can do a thorough egr valve and passage cleaning by removing the four access plugs located under each runner. It's impossible to do the cleaning in the car and if you reinstall with new gaskets you are just wasting your time. At any point in the repair you can knock loose some carbon and it can get stuck in an egr passage and BOOM, you're missing again required full removal a second

    • @Grescht
      @Grescht Před 8 lety

      Second time. I learned this the hard way and after having to do THAT job twice, I wouldn't wish that on any mechanic.
      CLEAN YOUR EGR AND EGR PASSAGES WHILE THE MANIFOLD IS OFF!!!!! DONT BE LAZY LIKE ME AND NOT PULL THE MANI ALL THE WAY. YOU DONT WANT TO DO THIS JOB TWICE.
      ^ moral of the story kids
      Learn from my mistakes and Eric's knowledge.
      For information on how to clean the egr passages refer to Eric's video where he performs this job on a F22 series Honda motor that's very similar.
