- As soon as you know you have a cast iron project, you get into brazing mode. There are a lot of reasons the skill of brazing was one skill that was handed down to me by the first old timers I had a chance to work with in the shipyards. The strength of it, the likeness in bearing surface, the ease of machining and the non-effect it has in the base material, no crystalizing or work hardening, maybe more but there are the most important in my book.
I agree to help a customer repair an old shear of his that sustained an injury during moving.

This will be a good brazing tutorial for me. I like the idea of getting rid of the smaller chunks and making it one big chunk of adhered brass, which should make the machining part a bit easier. Nobody seems to braze anymore...it's almost one of those lost arts.
I was taught to braze at school, borax flux and spelter rods for serious work. Nowadays they call mig welding with brass wire brazing, which is why they have banned brazing in car body work in UK (somebody did not understand the difference !)
@@CrimeVidthat is interesting, I also learnt to braze at school, it is a useful technique which goes with traditional filing & sawing skills.
Keith I do want to say thanks for turning me on to the Rawhide mallet. Its a beast. Yea new rawhides every year. But I have tendency to beat the shit out of stuff but know no marring.

Most excellent course of action. The nation should be thanking you not, just me. Inspiring. I'm going to now repair, my Weber grill handle with a thru bolt. It was spot welded and failed. Most would trash it. Not me, thanks to you. It's only 28 years old. I would never kick a 28 year old to the curb for losing the ability to provide a hand grip. That's almost criminal.

Keith I have the exact rawhide mallet I think. Mine is a Chicago rawhide number 4. Has a C/R on one side and 4 on the other. I inherited it from my Dad a WWII Navy (Okinawa) veteran. If you get a chance do a quick 'rebuild' video on your mallet and let us know where you sourced your new rawhide. Much appreciated sir.
