    To the people saying that this only happens to sloppy people I have some news for you! I am a young teen and I have campilobacter! Not because of not washing "the chicken" but because I own chickens! How I got it was, I went outside and fed them, ran to the car to get in it, forgot to wash my hands, and ate some food. It's not about being sloppy ALL THE TIME ! My mom has gotten it twice now and has gone through so much pain she couldn't eat! (She did the same thing as me!) All I have to say is that PLEASE wash your hands and stay safe!

    I had compylobacter, went to hospital in New Zealand, sent me home, no advice or answers to what was wrong with me. I had stomach pains that absolutely crippled me, diahorrhea all day, and then some. Lost alot of weight within 2days. Had test done with GP. Results finally found. Here this type of bacteria has to be recorded with the hospital here, my GP tells me hospital will call me. Still waiting for phone call, 1 year has gone by so far.I am with yours on this bacteria and know the hell we went through to get well. No antibiotics was given to me, lost appetite for over a month, couldnt eat at all, had no appetite or felt hunger pains .Thanks for sharing this video, I thought I was alone on this in New Zealand.

    I got very sick a day & a half after eating a chicken stir fry in a restaurant. High fever (104ºF) for 6 days. Diarrhea for 3 wks. Lost 13 lbs. 30 days later I am still weak & tire easily. Tested positive for Campylobacter. It has been brutal. Dehydration was a real problem . Sports drinks really helped as I lose a lot of salt when I sweat. Fortunately, there appear to be no long term effects.

      Bonjour.

    Well... the reason i got sick with campylobacter is because when i went to a local fast food place that normally sells fish and chips has decided to include chicken and they wanted me to try if its good or not because someone else said it wasn't good but i didnt find anything bad with it and i was just happy to get free food .
    Then a week later the symptoms came and i had the worst 2 weeks of my life ... i counted over 200 about times i had diarrhoea and i was feeling really dehydrated plus my poo was often green from the bacteria colonies in it.

    I have had campylobacter coming up to 4 weeks now. This is in the top 3 sickest I have EVER been, and I got extremely sick as a kid. Every time it looks like it's resolving, it just comes back again. I wouldnt wish this on my worst enemy (well maybe the guy that stole my wallet in Auckland).. I got it from a steak and cheese pie that I only took two bites of.

    Today I found out that my stool sample came back positive for campylobacter. It's a horrible infection that made me as sick as a dog. I had non-stop watery diarrhea for two weeks and I had severe abdominal cramps. I felt tired and nauseous, with vomiting. I also had a fever with chills. I was very miserable in those past 2 weeks and a campylobacter infection is definitely not fun. It's an illness that nobody wants and everyone should always be careful when handling food. Always wash your hands and always make sure that nothing dirty touches your mouth. Don't touch your mouth with unwashed hands either.

    I contracted this about three weeks ago. I am nearly recovered now but am still not 100% right. It was horrible.
    To some of those people asking why you don't just stop eating chicken, it was a vegetarian dish from a takeaway that infected me. If it's a place that doesn't care about hygiene for things like this, they're not going to bother changing knives between cutting the chicken and cutting the vegetables.

    This suggests that people should wash down their kitchen benches after preparing any meats, poultry and fish prior to potential cross contamination. Do not mix raw chicken with water and splash it around your house. I thoroughly agree with the comment below that our collective immune systems need to be exposed to more environmental combat in order to sharpen our defences.

    I work in the restaurant bizz. We prepare/ I cook at least 8 chickens a day. We fry a few 20 chickens a day and never wash them. Drain then season and cook never a problem. They get packed with a saline solution to keep them moist while they are cooking. And we get them in about a week from their kill date. Any longer than 2 I send them back. DON'T WASH YOUR CHICKEN. Where the hell do you people get this idea? Proper ServSafe rules and never a problem.

    I feel like I can never go out again for a meal on a restaurant, or ordering food somewhere else after eating a chicken burger from a store. The burger tasted great in all. The chicken taste was gone, no meat taste at all! When I took a bite, only from the chicken. It suddenly had all kind of weird tastes, especially a sour and a touch of sweatness. The consistency of this chicken which was also fried, was gummy. So I think we can taste these bacterias in meat/ or especially chicken, luckily.

  • @jimmij3894

    I thought the idea of washing was to clean it, after all bacteria have to go to toilet as well and from what I understand cooking kills bacteria but the waste from bacteria is not so easily destroyed.
    One advantage is that I don't like chicken anyway and rarely eat it plus to much meat gives me digestive problems so I'm not a great meat eater.

    The core question is: What is the ratio of people who contract campylobacter compared to the number of times people wash chicken? My gut feeling is that it'll be statistically ZERO, like 4 people contract campylobacter for every 10,000 instances of washing chicken. Sounds like alarmist crap to me.

    • @Darkgalahad
      @Darkgalahad Před 9 lety

      You're an idiot for putting shit like this out, what you THINK is one thing, maybe you should entertain google and check how many people contract this horrendous crap each year and then come back and say wether your stupid "i think" statement has any merrit.

    • @JohnWrightMoreCustomersGuy
      @JohnWrightMoreCustomersGuy Před 9 lety +2

      Darkgalahad First Google result:
      www.food.gov.uk/science/microbiology/campylobacterevidenceprogramme
      "About four in five cases of campylobacter poisoning in the UK come from contaminated poultry."
      Therefore roughly 80% of 280,000 campylobacter cases equals 224,000 per year, or 613 per day.
      How many chicken meals eaten per day in the UK?
      Let's see . . .
      64 million people live in the UK in 2013. Therefore @ 2 meals a day, approx 280 million meals a day.
      Let's say 10% are chicken, therefore 28 million chicken meals. Of which 613 cause campylobacter.
      Hmmm looks to me like that comes to a whole .002%. TWO THOUSANDTHs of ONE percent.
      As I said, statistically ZERO.
      And you call me an idiot? I dunno what everyone else thinks, but if we're looking for an idiot, I'd say YOU will do until we find a more ignorant one.

      Lol, you can get Campylobacter by just eating bad chicken, it's a type of food poising and its probably one of the worst you can get. I contracted it a few years back and was in hospital because of it. My case was so severe that it became septic and almost died from it. This isn't an 'alarmist crap', it's a serious bacteria that ignorant people like you have no idea of. Besides, wtf is the point of washing your chicken? You have to get it to a temperature so high it should kill all bacteria. so idk what you're doing with your chicken man, but you must eat shit so you're immune to probably even e-coli. Ps, i contracted the bacteria from a McDonald's chicken wrap that the staff left in their storage fridges for only three days. Didn't even have anything to do with washing the chicken.

    I've always washed the chicken and will continue to do so. Never had any problems. I've always, always, cleaned up after preparing chicken or any meat by scrubbing and cleaning every surface that I used while processing, everything. That's just how I was raised. Don't think I'll NOT wash the chicken; that doesn't seem right.

    • @november2743
      @november2743 Před 10 lety +4

      You don't understand. Even a perfectly cleaned sink and cutting board can still harbor salmonella, shigella and campylobacter. It doesn't matter how you were raised. Washing splashes contaminated water onto your clothes, the skin on your face, and around the room. You can very carefully open the package and with the faucet running, slowly pour the extra juice down the drain without creating aerosols.

    • @marcellee.1749

    • @jimmij3894
      @jimmij3894 Před 10 lety +2

      Maybe the problem is that the raising of chickens in modern farming conditions is contributing to the problem. Saw a program recently where thousands of chickens were in a warehouse. I suppose if any animals were confined over a long period of time it would be a surprise they didn't get infected.

    • @tristanhnl
      @tristanhnl Před 9 lety

      Rachel DeTurk That depends what you mean by "perfectly cleaned sink". Warm water with dishwashing detergent, no. Chlorine or chlorhexidine gluconate (same stuff used to disinfect patients before surgery), yes. You can wash the chicken gently without splashing everywhere; just don't turn the water on so high, and pat dry with a paper towel before moving it out of the sink. Common sense, really.

    • @Darkgalahad
      @Darkgalahad Před 9 lety +1

      Marcelle E. This is coming from someone who is in his 3rd campylo infection at the moment and that takes hygiene rather serious in the kitchen.
      Stop being stupid. Washing chicken doesn't do anything. It's stupid to do either way. Just because you learnt it doesn't make it right. You're stupid for putting yourself at risk, it's the same as with the seatbelt in the car.
