âą My Japanese Koi Pond i...
How to mix it up.
One BALL jar or it want work. (NOT MASON..đ€Ł)
One cup of White Distilled Vinegar
One cup of boiling HOT water
One triple zero steel wool pad. (Super Fine cut into small pieces)
One capful of hydrogen peroxide
Mine sat for two weeks until I did this job.
It works, I kid you not! Right now I'm looking at a pine plank I bought last week at the lumber yard that looks like it's been outside in the weather for the past 20 years! Thank you very much, Mr. Cole, I couldn't have done it without you!
SisterWithit - Good deal. Iâm glad it worked out for you. đđđđŒ
SisterWithit o yeah!!
Patrick Lowney - Yes I do. I have a 1946 J-3C Cub that may Grandfather left me. Check out my videos.
Patrick Lowney - Yes sir. Burt changes a lot in Aviation. Fantastic guy! He is 77 now. Not 75. Lol
I tried this and figured out how to speed up the process. Instead of leaving the steel wool in the solution for 3 days, take the steel wool out after one day of soaking let it sit for 10 minutes so it rusts, put it back in the solution and it does the trick
Clever.
@@neobailey5268 my wife thinks I'm a genius. Lol
so i made it too . just by using woodprix woodworking plans :)
Best plans to me!
@@sandygrey5513 Glad you love it !
Finally, after years of watching CZcams videos, I can plainly understand what the narrator is saying. :D

Mick Bradford - đ€Ł I hear ya brother. Iâm just an old Country boy. Lol. Thanks for your comment! God bless!
This is a pretty funny reply. Thanks for your humor!
Brilliant
How the hell does 179 people do a thumbs down? Very cool video, just getting started with woodworking. Very excited about it and any little video like this is helpful. Thank you, Sir
Who knows. But that donât bother me. They probably tried doing it but didnât follow my directions exactly and it didnât work for them so they came back and gave it a đđŒ. đ€Łđ€·đŒââïž
Glad you liked the video. Wood working is very fun. Iâve been doing it all my life. Thanks again for watching!
Merry CHRISTmas & Happy New Year!!!đ
Those are from those big city liberal types. đ”âđ«đŹđ
Because they don't like Larry the Cable Guy doing woodwork!
That's funny, right thar... I don't care who ya are!
Git 'er done!
for those who don't know you can boil the vinegar for making using it faster be ready in about an hour. less steel wool lighter stain more its darker.
Your place is beautiful good work buddy
Thanks đ
Nice video and down-to-earth narration. But your yard is the star of the video. Beautiful setup and cool looking buildings and features.
Aww thank you so much!! I hope it helped you. đđđŒ
I had just started putting my Koi pond in not long before I made this video on how to age wood. Here is a great video of what it looked like in full bloom during the summer.
czcams.com/video/WS6bNQHvGJU/video.html
All the other videos are about how to refresh old wood. This is awesome!
Thanks so much for showing the contrast between the effects of the aged âstainâ on the strips and the fresh stain on the door. I have been having trouble getting the aged look but thanks to your video I will let it sit for a couple weeks! And Iâm going to get gloves!
Sean Clark đ€ŁDo ware gloves. đđŒ
Thank you so much for your comment! Best of luck!! đđđŒ
Very talented builder. You could build and sell the little buildings...........!
I used this process a few years ago...it works great! Thanks for reminding me about it. Cool pond too! Thanks for posting this video.
Thank you so much! God bless!
Beautiful! Rusty nails in vinegar will give a rich brown tone.
The fresh/clean pine on top of the weather wood was a really nice look! Provides a nice bit of contrast.
this is the third video I have watched for three different products and all that any of them do is color the wood. Not do anything to affect the grain to really make them look weathered
Wow, some fish! Looking forward to your pond video. Thanks Cole!
Interesting, woodmaker just told me this technique, it was nice to see in action.
Thanks for watching!
You can heat your vinegar in your jar, wash out your steel wool with a bit of soap to get the factory oil out. Squeeze out the water and snip it into the hot vinegar. Let it sit over night. In the morning add one teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide and it will darken, then just paint away. No waiting a week. đ
Ok gonna try this~
Wendy and David do you use same water amount as his recipe or no water?
swstiglich I don't think anybody is using water unless they are making a stain with tea.
I've done that and my wood turns kinda reddish?
No Problem. Love your houses and buildings. They look so authentic! Very cool. Wish I had a yard like yours.
Michael Breskin - I greatly appreciate it. It was a lot of work. I need to do a pond update video. It looks so natural now. My fish are 18â to 24â now. And 4 to 7 pounds. đđđŒ
You definitely get a thumbs up from me! This is the first time I've ever given one as well! Clear instructions and it was an absolute joy watching your video! Thank you so much!

Thanks. I knew about the vinegar and steel wool but didn't know about letting it sit for days or weeks. Great tip!
Mark Simmons - Thanks for your comment!!
Another person claims that adding 1 (tsp or tbsp ?) hydrogen peroxide after waiting just one night . . . but snipping the steel wool into the vinegar to start with . . . and it will darken it quickly via sped up oxidation.
Thank you so much , great and quick way of getting aged timber look .

Nice work. Thank you. Lovely pond too.
I just poured distilled white vinegar into a mason jar and put in one pad of 000 steel wool and put the lid on. I am going to let it sit for two weeks and give it a shot. I will let you know how it looks. Thanks for the video.

Thanks for the tip. Think your water mill looks great, too!
Craig Humphries -Thank you so much!!!
Chad Cole - Youâre very welcome! Can I also ask how old that maple tree is? I think you mentioned that youâd just planted it there - Did you plant it from a large pot or did you actually dig it up and move it?
Craig Humphries - Me and my late dad planted it beside his Japanese Koi pond in 2000. It is called a Dragon Lace Leaf Maple. But I went over and dug it up about 3 years ago or so.
Looks amazing!!! And way cheaper than stain
Killa Catfish - Thanks! And yes it is. đđđŒ It works perfect if you mix it just like I have it listed in the description of this video. Thanks for watching!
"Ball jar, not a Mason" đđ
I have my steel wool and vinegar aging. One week now. Iâm going to apply it to old wood to see how it comes out. Wish me luck!
thank you, very informative. Looks nice. I'm going to try this in an old house that I'm Remodeling to match some old wood in kitchen.

I like the little doll house on the other side it's a cool look also
Thanks!
Made this solution and tested it after only three days. It turned white pine a dark brown. Going to test it again at the two week mark as per the video description.
PrimitiveVsns - Yep. It will turn it brown if you try to soon. Thatâs why it said two weeks. đđđŒ Thank you so much for watching and for your comment!! God bless!
Cole Aviation thank you for replying. I miss spoke, the wood I tested is Douglas Fir and the project that Iâll be staining is Douglas Fir. Been testing it every day just to see the different colors so I have an idea for future projects.
Used something similar (vinegar that I had used to remove rust from some old files) on the handle of an opinel knife. Let it soak overnight and it turned almost black.
Very nice. Going to use that in making my camper shell interior look rustic.iam going with a western cabin theme
Creative Hearts John Villanueva - Thanks John! That will be cool!!! Let me know how it works out. đđŒ
Is that your backyard? If so it is beautiful. It looks so peaceful and Surien like a country nature wonderland. I would love for you to do a video tour of your backyard. And if you can please include the construction process and what was your inspiration for the creativity of the overall look that you wanted to achieve.
Lakeisha Galloway - Thank you very much for your kind comment. We put this koi pond in - in remembrance of my late dad. He LOVED Japanese koi ponds and Japanese maple trees. I was able to go back to where I grew up and the people that bought his house was nice enough to give me my daddys Laceleaf Japanese Maple tree that me and daddy planted next to his koi pond. No problem and I am also from the south and have a southern accent. Not quite as strong as yours but I always get asked where I'm from. My wife is Canadian so we always poke fun at each other, and we were in Adairsville, Georgia over Easter. Great idea for wood....

Very helpful! Going to try on the new cut side of naturally weathered redwood. Wish me luck. Thanks! (And enjoyed your back yard.)
Loren Woodson - Goodluck Loren!! I hope đ€ it worked out for you on your red wood. Glad you got something out of my video.
Tried it on some cedar and some redwood. The mix of steel wool and vinegar had sat for about 2 weeks. Does definitely darken wood to a dark gray--for me a little too dark. I'll try experimenting. Thanks!
Loren Woodson - sorry it was to dark for ya. Maybe try it after it sits for one week instead of two weeks. đđŒ
Actually the dark is a good application for the interior of some rustic redwood furniture I'm making. But thanks for the tip!
Loren Woodson - Good deal. đđŒ
Nice
Thanks!
Looks good! Fish pond looks good too
Jason Burnett -Thanks brother! đđŒ
Followed the instructions exactly. The wood turned dark brown. I could have much easier used walnut stain.
What kind of wood did you use?
Excellent âșthankyou just what I was looking for.
Jacqueline Foote - Your more than welcome. đđŒđ
Nice little spot ya got there.
Bone Headed Thanks!
Good job !!!!!
Bill Pruitt Thanks buddy!
Thanks for actually filming this Chad, though I have not been able to get this to work under any circumstance. Two week old viniger and steel wool, even when applied to heated wood ( sometimes stuff like that can make a difference) it just will not work.
kerry krishna - WOW!!! I am so sorry it did not work for you. đ Did you use every thing I had in the description just the way I did? And did yours turn dark brown after two weeks before you tried it?
There are not enough tannins in the wood I am working with Chad. I have brewed up some strong tea, and soaked the wood, and it is doing some interesting things now. I have done this in the past year a few times, and even using different kinds of wood, have never had the amazing success you have in minutes. Thanks for your responce !
Chad, I think the end story is this: Always put the steel wool in a mason jar with water and a few drops of liquid soap and super shake it up, dry the wool, and then cut it up into tiny pieces and add vinegar. I think the oil prevented the vinegar getting into the wool. It is working for me now on a few projects. Thanks!
WOW!! Bless your heart. I am so sorry this didnât work out as easy for you. I think it may be the brand of steel wool I used. And I canât not remember what brand it was but I will look and see. Plus the strips of wood that I was staining I had just ripped them in the tablesaw so it was fresh cut wood. Glad you finally got something to work. đđđŒ
I have also heard the finer the steel wool the better, ie. go with grade # 000
Beautiful! Im going to try this!!
Check out a product called Eco Wood Treatment - you could throw it on after the vinegar/wool weathering has done its thing and the wood will last 20+ years in the weather. It turns a sort of brown grey unlike the patina'd grey you have here, but you could probably put it on afterwards and it would darken up a tad.
goodolarchie - Thanks for your kind comments! I will for sure check it out.
Great vid chatđđż

Hey boss man can you run another experiment?!
If you spray bleach on weathered wood would it turn back to fresh cut wood?
I would love to see you show us if it works on your project here!
You have your wedding ring on the wrong hand đ€, but great information thanks

Thanks! I so love this! Your yard is amazing! Do you make house calls, would love to have this whole area in my yard!
Sam Siler - Thank you for your kind comment! Iâm sorry I do not. đ
My solution turned rusty and makes the pine boards a warm , rusty brown . Iâd prefer the grey . Should I take the steel wool out before it rusts ? The brown is nice. But Iâm making faux barnwood for a big job. Need more grey . Love your pond and setup . Good video. Are ya from TN ? Your accent is similar to mine . Have a good day !
Thank you so much for watching! What I discovered with that is if the wood is really smooth or slick then it COULD turn it brown instead of grey. The strips were cut on a table saw so they were rough cut which makes it turn grey. If you notice in the video my door on the water mill is more brown but the strips are grey. But no you do not want to remove the steel wool. Leave it in there until it rust away. Which is about 14 days. đđđŒ
Nice look. I'm going to try this on a test piece. I know you are using white, distilled vinegar, but you said you "mixed it up". What did you mix up and "let it set"?
Thanks for watching! Everything is in the video description. đđđŒ
Thanks for a great video, Chad! You have a great space there - love the waterwheel and the koi pond. I do have a question. I really want to weather some pressure-treated wood that was used to put a tin roof over a swing. We are going to use some old barn wood for the gables, but you can see that ugly lumber and it really messes it up. Do you think the treatment will work on this lumber? I made a batch using your recipe and am letting it set up for the two weeks. Thanks for any advice and keep the great videos coming! You're awesome!
Angie Howell - Hello Angie! First off thank you so much for watching my video! I really hope you get what you need out of it. I hope you and your family are staying safe through out this CRAZY CRAZY WORLD.
But as far as the treated wood goes Iâm not a 100% sure how it will turn out. Iâve never tried it on pressure treated wood. Please let me know how it turns out when you do it.
God bless!
