    Grandmaster Chu Shong Tin was the 3rd student of Ip Man.
    Ip Man called him "Siu Nim Tau Wong (小念頭王)" or "Siu Nim Tau King ".
    Grandmaster Chu Shong Tin was also my Teacher.
    Let me teach you what he taught me

    "The Empty hand Forms of Wing Chun are not fighting techniques". This is what Master Chu would always say to us while we are practicing. "You must find the idea behind each movement, what forces and ideas are being cultivated, how can we produce power with as little brute force as possible. What is Nim Tao..."
    Master Chu's take on the forms were different to most. Ip Man also had a very similar take on the forms which is why he told him that the purpose of Siu Nim Tao's practice is to "cultivate an idea"

    You have said it all. Those who have not experienced it may not believe and may criticize. Some sifu may get it himself but trying to make things complex for whatever reasons. That is not helpful keeping the real Wing Chun alive. You are doing an excellent job.

      @MindfulWingChun Sorry about the Zhan Zhuang question! I bow to and totally respect your superior knowledge and skill. I have not trained with a Master since 1999 and not trained with anyone properly since my friend took ill with a stroke in 2015
      However I find I get a similar effect from both Siu Nim Tao (mainly the first part) and Zhan Zhuang. I suppose it depends whether you stand like a Tree or a post!

    I would love to hear more about this roundness of force that you were talking about. for me recently I have been trying to practice more in public spaces when I am waiting or something. I used to practice just standing but I now also do some of the form. I think it is helpful so as to open your mind in the sense of not resisting you surroundings or thinking they have to be a certain way for you to be the way you want to be. I feel like I have some days where I feel like i have acheived a lot and also am amazed at how easily it seems like I revert back to some old habituated self.

      nice. It sounds like you are enjoying the exploration. I'm glad to hear that you're not just standing and are doing the form now too. I did the standing for a long time but it's so much more fruitful and much higher levels are gained with doing the forms cause different ideas are gained. Standing is like starting the engine of a vehicle, and the forms are learning how to actually drive

      Thanks for mentioning Zhan Zhuang, I just had a brief look into it. I'm not sure what Nima would say about it being the same as standing practice but it definitely sounds like the same thing. Perhaps our lineage adds a Wing Chun twist to it.

      @KateJohn2013England I don't think Zhan Zhuang practice attains the same thing as our kind of standing practice because over the years I've met hundreds of people who do that and are on a very different path to what we do.
      But either way, just doing standing a practice without moving is very limited from my experience

    Hey Nima, thanks for your passion and content. I really like the perspective of wing chun as an internal art with that kind of effortless power and I'd consider myself as a open minded person. Though I don't understand how you can use that "Nim Tao" state of mind in a brute situation if muscular force is coming at you. I really would like to see an internal practitioner sparrs against a common boxer or some other dynamic moving person. I kind of want both: that internal health benefit and relaxation, mindfulness etc but also I want to be able to defend myself in a aggressive surrounding. If I get A. Mizner right you cannot have (practice) both and have to decide which engine you want to develop and use. What is your opinion about selfdefense and internal martial arts?
    Best regards! Matt

    • @michaelreadnower4424
      @michaelreadnower4424 Před 8 měsíci +3

      Hi matt I love your question. I think it is much more valuable to cultivate a state or naturalness to your body-mind condition that you can maintain under all circumstances. I think it much more effective for self defense as well. also I understand your concern about wanting to be able to nullify aggressive behavior toward you via physical or verbal I imagine. I think for self defense the best thing to cultivate is your awareness of you own inner conditions as they result in your outer circumstances. you are also cultivating you awareness of your surroundings so as to be able to sense other people states. Also it is training you not to react how most people react when they encounter certain outward conditions so you can maintain your inner condition. There is progressive training in most arts to allow for you to slowly be able to deal with more force. I think like nima said about the natural forces of your mind and the earth are what you are training to understand. I think nima has some other great videos showcasing how he can deal with someone using force. hope that is of service haha! much love happy practicing and many blessings

      @MindfulWingChun  Před 8 měsíci +6

      Hi Matt,
      I don't see it in that way that the engine developed can only be used for either health/combat and that you need to choose one.
      It does take a lot more time and practice to be able to apply the state in more dynamic situations for sure, and people may not have that kind of time. For example on the onlinenschool I know majority of the students are doing 20mins a day. With that amount of time the person won't be able to get very good at sparring, especially cause they only do partner training every now and then.
      However take someone like Sifu Lawrence who is doing a couple of hours of forms per day, sparring with students a few times a week, doing bjj, strengthening and conditioning his body etc. he can have both and improving very rapidly in both the health aspects and the fighting aspects, as well as getting better and better as a teacher.
      So with this method, the Nim Tao state can be applied to any kind of movement but that situation but be practiced diligently to be achieved.

    • @darkhorse888
      @darkhorse888 Před 8 měsíci +2

      @@MindfulWingChun I'd also say that to be good at fighting you need to fight. Is Lawrence sparring with gloves, mouthguard and in a ring against other motivated fighters? The sort of sparring i see a lot of wing chun people do is very compliant. Typically from people who have no idea how to throw a punch, move, pressure, defend etc. (not saying that is Lawrence and his students). You can say the same thing about people sparring in boxing or kickboxing gyms as well. Even BJJ. Its all very compliant. The ring/cage is a good indication if your skills work. Not perfect of course but better. The new Jorge Masividal MMA bare knuckle is a little closer to the truth.

      Hi, can you elaborate what do you mean about punching and kicking without the intent of it. I am confuse as well what it really means ?

    • @australianwingchunacademy
      @australianwingchunacademy Před 8 měsíci

      @@user-ux7kq1lz5j Different ideas work for different people but a lot of people do a similar thing. When performing a punch or kick our minds think of putting effort into the movement as it needs to have a powerful result. This often expresses itself as muscular tension which doesn't allow the force to come out freely. We might experience force bouncing back at us. If we think instead of moving our arm for instance from point A to point B we can do it with no tension. We often practice by visualising a similar movement. Instead of a punch we might visualise grabbing a cup, it is a more relaxed, tension free idea rather than a strong punch.
      Another idea is when using your fist, hand, knee, leg what ever you are doing, place the fist or leg in the end position you wish to accomplish, not worrying too much about how to get there. We obviously need to think of how to get to that position but sometimes it's good to "just do it" your mind is often way more free and your body will use less or no tension.
      I hope that explains the way I've been thinking about punching and kicking. I'd love to hear other peoples ideas too.

      Thank you for your awesome and detail explanation. I would like to incorporate this idea into my training. When you relax the muscles in striking, what happens with the activity of the tendons? @@australianwingchunacademy

    • @australianwingchunacademy
      @australianwingchunacademy Před 8 měsíci

      Hey no worries, I hope I didn't waffle on too much.
      If I understand correctly, the tendons should be in a neutral state not under tension. Something that isn't always easy to achieve.
      Try feeling the bicep tendon and ligaments on the inside of your elbow joint when you hold your arm up. You can feel that in different positions it will relax or have tension. Ideally we will put our arm in a position like a punch with the tendons being relaxed. If you can pin point the tendon area in your mind you can work on relaxing that area.
      I'm still learning how to do this myself and how to help people improve with this.

    Thank you for the video :) very helpful - a question I have is: would you suggest we take the “application “ (fighting, etc) mindset for a while? Or watch the proportion of training (form, then a bit of chisau and sparring) ?

    • @MindfulWingChun
      @MindfulWingChun  Před 8 měsíci +1

      I think both is very important to practice if you are interested in the whole art. some people are more into the health mind-body aspect so for them I don't recommend the fighting training (sparring), but they should still do chisau, and other lighter application as that will also out the practice of the forms into perspective

    Hey sifu let me ask you something uts good to practice weigthlifting in wing vhun or it's better use isométrics ,?

    • @MindfulWingChun
      @MindfulWingChun  Před 2 měsíci

      I lift once a week (just deadlifts and sometimes squats). I also do a little bit of calisthenics here and there.
      The imporant thing is to ensure that you retain a good level of relaxation and if lifting weights is resulting in becoming more tensed up overall and decreasing your relaxation levels in Wing Chun then you should decrease the load and frequency.
