An armour (spelled armor in the US) is a protective covering that is used to prevent damage from being inflicted to an object, individual, or vehicle by weapons or projectiles, usually during combat, or from damage caused by a potentially dangerous environment or action.
The word "armour" began to appear in the Middle Ages as a derivative of Old French. It is dated from 1297 as a "mail, defensive covering worn in combat". The word originates from the Old French armure, itself derived from the Latin armatura meaning "arms and/or equipment", with the root armare meaning "arms or gear".
Armour has been used throughout recorded history. It has been made from a variety of materials, beginning with rudimentary leather protection and evolving through mail and metal plate into today's modern composites.
Significant factors in the development of armour include the economic and technological necessities of its production. For instance, plate armour first appeared in Medieval Europe when water-powered trip hammers made the formation of plates faster and cheaper.
Well-known armour types in European history include the lorica hamata, lorica squamata, and the lorica segmentata of the Roman legions, the mail hauberk of the early medieval age, and the full steel plate harness worn by later medieval and renaissance knights, and breast and back plates worn by heavy cavalry in several European countries until the first year of World War I (1914-15). The samurai warriors of feudal Japan utilised many types of armour for hundreds of years up to the 19th century.
A sword is a bladed weapon used for cutting and thrusting the enemies. The precise definition of the term varies with the historical epoch or the geographical region under consideration. A sword in the most narrow sense consists of a straight blade with two edges and a hilt, but depending on context, the term is also often used to refer to bladed weapons with a single edge.
Maces are blunt weapons, a club-like that uses a heavy head on the end of a handle to smash enemies with powerful and devastating blows. A mace typically is made of a strong, heavy, wooden or metal shaft, reinforced with metal, with a head made of stone, copper, bronze, iron, or steel.
They sometimes added flanges or knobs to the head of a military mace to allow greater penetration of plate armour. Maces were developed during the Paleolithic from the simple club, by adding sharp spikes of flint or obsidian. During the Middle Ages armour made of metal such as mail protected against the blows of edged weapons. Metal maces and war hammers though proved able to inflict damage on metal armoured knights, as the force of a blow from a mace is great enough to cause damage without penetrating the armour. Iron was often the main choice to build this kind of weapons but copper and bronze were also used, especially in iron-deficient areas.

Thanks for the correction mate. I guess it comes down to how we define what a battlefield weapon is. I don’t really consider the longsword a battlefield weapon either, even though it was used on the battlefield, because that is not it’s sole purpose or use, whereas a poleaxe is far more designed for the battlefield. I guess I should stick with, not a “primary” battlefield weapon to be clearer ^_^
LOVED the video, especially since you touched on several things I skipped, and elaborated farther on others, all depending on what we’re more studied in. I noticed you skipped the archery decapitation part but were also able to share more information on the Japanese elements. Just makes both our videos complement each other even more.

To be fair, from the period pictures I've seen, longswords with shields appear to be mixed into spear lines; whether it's to protect the spear bearers, or so officers could move through the line more easily, isn't so clear.

Anyhow I'm glad you liked my video and Great job on yours! As for the Battlefield weapon I consider a Battlefield weapon a weapon that was used on a Battlefield, since all Samurai during the time the katana was in use carried them on the field I would consider It as such, but I do see your point of view too.

I would also like to point out a mindset a lot of people who are unfamiliar with historical combat have. They tend to talk about medieval combat as if it were every man for himself on the battlefield. I think it is very important to mention that formations (not the 'tightly packed' ones we see in the trailer, but actual tightly packed ones) were present for almost every battle. Every soldier had a part to play in that formation. In this case, when referring to early Medieval era, or the "Dark Ages," shield walls were a common formation for "Vikings," Franks, Saxons, and most of western Europe at this time. You need a shield to complete a shield wall. It isn't just to defend yourself, but the men on either side of you, and behind you. If you have two axes, you aren't really all that helpful in the otherwise effective formation.

    Very good debunking video Metatron!
I wanted to add that blade grabbing as an option happens quite a lot during a fight. The requirements is only grabbing the opponent's sword while it stops (which requires good timing), if the sword doesn't move it is possible to hold it bare handed, of course a pair of "simple" leather gloves is recomended, it'sfar more than enough to decrease the chance of being slashed by a twitch, a twist or a pull (which are three common ways of trying to free the sword by a grab).
Anyway Fiore dei Liberi tells us that while duelling (and most probably also while traveling and as a Fashion tool) people was wearing "Guanti di Camussa" chamuis leather gloves, to protect the hands. Armor doesn't increase the safety in this specific act, but increases the chance of stopping the sword (you can stop it whit almost all your body) and so increases the number of chances to actually grab the sword.

Aside from the historical facts, pointed out by Metatron and Shad, my main issue with GT's video was that it's all over the place. The initial premise was supposed to be whether or not dual wielding 2 different weapons (axes) is practical. Then it diverged to all sorts of topics from decapitating heads with an arrow (incorrect as pointed out by Shad), dual wielding shields, and then the title of his video which is different from his opening lines in the video.

Correct. I practice Arnis and Shotokan Karate and my Master in both says a "dead hand" in combat is undesirable.

Usually they do the "hand on the hip" thing when doing certain sequences.
We do (almost) the same in modern sparring for Arnis since you're only allowed to hit with your stick/blade. We have our hands close to the chest to guard the heart/vitals in the center of mass (torso).
When it gets closer than the effectiveness of sequences with the szabla/baston/espada, we still have to take that "dead hand" and use it to check/trap/control the opponent... As you may already be aware. 🙏🇵🇭

About the argument of contact area: he is forgetting another physical property and that is hardness. Basically if you hit someone with your fist, tendons, muscle and bones are there. SOme of it has some leeway to give way and therefore basically "cushion" the impact and limit the amount of transfered force. With a shield that is less of an issue. Plus you have more weight with a shield, aiding with the kinetics and no chance to injure yourself, as opposed to hitting someone with a fist.

True. Our modern practice (I am currently studying under the Cinco Teros style ) of Kali-Arnis focuses on weapons, but the dual wielding sequences also help in the dexterity of using the so-called "empty hand" in parrying/checking/trapping for using single weapons, as well as total empty handed techniques in Dumog and Panuntukan/Suntukan.
Similar in a way to the actual use of the "Hiki-te" (pulling hand) in Karatedo. It's meant to control/seize an opponent, and possibly to break their posture in close quarters.

They were Decor and not weapons, which fits them. And after the third time Mat has done this, well... I’m not willing to help him. But, my crusader comrade has made a good argument with dual wielding and he does seem proficient with it. And as a minor correction, Mat has some weapon experience. In choreography because in the same damn month you, Skall, and Shad made responses to him, on his TV Show, Game Lab, he hired a Choreographer to teach him swordplay, which me and my lad were rather offended by as sword enthusiasts. There are different ways to multiply that force that dont include extending your reach. Brass knuckles for example. They work by concentrating the force of your entire fist into the small surface area of the brass knuckles. Pretty sure Matt got like 4 things right in this video and one of them is his name.

26:50 I gotta disagree here. Most armies, even well trained ones like Romans would break into a charge in the last few meters. For example, at the Battle of Pharsalus, when Caesar's men were advancing at Pompey's line, the Centurions called an abrupt halt because Pompey's men refused to counter charge. Sure, depending on the formation they were using, like the Phalanx or Testudo the armies would be forced to march slowly, but the Phalanx was phased out for a reason, and you'd never want to attack an enemy position in Testudo unless you can't avoid it. Even in the exact time period Mat Pat's talking about, the only time you wouldn't want to charge the enemy would be if you're in a Shieldwall, and that's a defensive formation. You'd rarely advance directly into the enemy while in a Shieldwall, you'd wait for them to come to you or wait for them to stop raining projectiles on you.

Even in full armor in a fight, wow when someone starts slamming you with their shield sometimes... I would argue the shield is more important in melee fights than the weapon itself really, it just plain packs more of a punch and force. I also have a teammate that uses dual axes... it's so annoying... in the best way for him. You can hook pieces of armor and weapons and completely disable a person, sometimes for what feels like a lot longer than "temporary". Just to add too, the largest dents in my armor and helmet are from blows from a 2 handed axe.
