They are two different things that cannot be compared. Luciano sings it as a tenor. He sang it as a kind of “opera piece”, whereas Caruso is a popular song, it is not “opera”. Lara here instead every song she performs , regardless of the type of song, makes it sound like every song was born with her (Caruso as well as the other beautiful Italian song “Perdere L’amore”).

Only Lara and Julio should be allowed to perform this
Pavarotti was bloody awful and his cover is arguably..and a strong argument at that ... the worst cover EVER.
      Just saying.

The writer of this song, Lucio Dalla (from Bologna, northern Italy), wrote this in 1986 while staying in one of the rooms where Enrico Caruso, former famous tenor (From Neaples, southern Italy), spent the final days of his life. Caruso was 48-years-old when he died, and a few years before Caruso died, he married Dorothy Park Benjamin who was 20 years younger. They had a baby girl they named Gloria. Lucio Dalla wrote this song while imagining how Caruso, who knew he was dying, would have said goodbye to his young wife - the love of his life.
curiosity: in sicilian dialect the word caruso means (ragazzo) boy.

As a Belgian, I've known Lara for a number of years. I knew a handful of songs, the ones they played on the radio years ago, like "Tu Es Mon Autre", "Je t'aime" and "Je Suis Malade". I'm Flemish though, and Flemish radio channels tend to not play a lot of French tunes. I recently discovered more of her songs, this one for starters. I've been sitting here for hours, days, weeks, listening to her songs on repeat and my emotions are all over the place. I go from super excited to bawling my eyes out in mere minutes. That's the power of Lara. It's not just the music and the perfect pitch and the incredible talent and the faultless singing technique. It's all of that and more. The raw emotion she brings. Her inner (and outer) beauty. I find myself wishing I had a time machine so I could travel back in time and go to all of her concerts. Speaking of a concert, do yourself a favor and go watch her "En Toute Intimité" concert. Here's the link: czcams.com/video/WMkwU9HVCvU/video.html. If that doesn't work, search for "LARA FABIAN ♥♥ En Toute Intimite ♥ Live 2003 (Hi-Fi)".) Make sure to bring tissues. I take it you don't speak French (you sound Scandinavian, Norwegian perhaps?) so some of the lyrics will be lost on you. If you don't want to listen to the whole thing, make sure you fast forward to 1:26:07. You'll recognize the song as you reacted to another version of it. ;)
As for a suggestion for a next reaction video, if I may, please have a look into Faouzia - Tears of Gold (Stripped) czcams.com/video/gz1zi7oUt_Y/video.html

Lara Fabian was born gifted with such a talent for singing. PLUS, she was very well trained by the best opera teachers from Belgium and Italy, but she decided to sing pop songs, she also has the knowledge to sing in operatic way, she studied from her 8 to 18 at the Belgium Conservatory of Music (there she learned Bel Canto, piano [she composes her own songs on piano), she started singing professionaly at the age of 15, in 1985, her first video clipe came when she turned 16, in 1986 and her first world wide album was released at the begin of 1990. Then since 1998 she kept having vocal lessons with her Italian teacher untill nowdays, she has two vocal teachers (From Belgium and Italy) and she keeps having vocal lessons at least 3 times per week on-line. Lara also has been working as a vocal coach on The Voice Canada, she already worked as the vocal coach at the Star Academy program in France from 2004 /2008. Please react to Lara Fabian - Llora live in Kremlin 2010 (Llora means cry in English). She speaks fluently and composes in 4 languages (English, Spanish, Italian and French), but she is able to speak and understand a little bit of Russian, Dutch and Portuguese, she already sang live in 12 languages.
    Thank you.

Didy, what a real moment. Thank you. You now know fully. She is the Queen, long may she reign. Grown men cry hearing this all the time, I can tell you from personal experience. A little below on the backstory to this song. I adore Luciano Pavarotti, and "adore" barely scratches the surface. I am a child of the Pavarotti Era and we all worshipped him, live, I remember seeing him live like it was yesterday. There have been only two voices that can make me tear up just hearing them. Luciano and Lara. Luciano's "Caruso" is traditional, he uses the high notes at the end of phrases to go big. She uses them to go angelic. Her interpretation is vastly different. And in all do respect, molto rispetto, to the Maestro, I like Lara's better. The song is very beautiful, covered by many, and it is about the dying days of Enrico Caruso (the O.G., the Original Gangster of modern opera and a worldwide superstar on the order of Michael Jackson). He married a women, an heiress, in a very public affair. Lucio Dalla, the author, imagined those gut wrenching dying days of Enrico, saying goodbye to his young wife. Dalla visited the Hotel where Caruso and his wife stayed often, the actual room in fact, on the Gulf of Sorrento (hence the words in the song). She says - Gulf of "Surriento" not Surrento - not a mistake. Surriento is the Neapolitan word, a word which Caruso would have used (He was born in Naples). Beautiful song, beautifully...masterfully done, in perfect Italian. Knowing the backstory only makes one cry a little more the next time you listen to this, and you will. She has you now as she has all of us.

@@didymalgia No problem Didy. My Lara journey is about 18 months along. I am still in the "awe" stage. I am told I may never get out of this stage. I am an armature musician (very), and just a music nut in general. I like all music, all styles, constantly searching for new musical experiences. One artist has kept me in the "awe" stage over what is now getting to be a long lifetime, Luciano Pavarotti. Lara is starting to feel like the 2nd one.

I must agree with you about Pavarotti. This version is a near to God experience. That's it. It's not about technique even if she is very skilled, it's about being and communicate emotions. I have never felt that anyone could make everything around me to just disappear. Like she was in the same room. Nice reaction, I could see you were moved. I guess you are Swedish? Nice background too.

Enrico Caruso (*1873 in Naples, † 1921 ibid; actually Errico Caruso) was an Italian opera singer. He is considered the most famous tenor of the early 20th century and one of the most important singers in the world of opera.
Caruso was famous for his baritone voice and stage presence. In a performance of La Bohème he sang an aria for the suddenly voiceless bass so convincingly that no one in the audience noticed.
Caruso established a new, exemplary style of singing in which the focus was not on beautiful performance but on becoming one with the character being portrayed.
Caruso is the name everyone knows and to which every opera singer is compared. Those who have seen him describe the onset of his voice with the warm power of an organ.
Caruso still holds the record of 863 appearances on the Metropolitan Opera stage.
And it was Caruso who initiated the triumph of the record with his work.
Caruso's generosity was legendary. For example, during his most successful years at the Metropolitan Opera, he gave almost all employees Christmas presents.
His sense of humor was also famous. Again and again he joked with his stage colleagues, for example sewing up a sleeve of a coat that a colleague in La Bohème had to wear during the performance, or filling water in a discarded hat that someone had to wear in the performance.
3 years before his death he married the American millionaire daughter Dorothy Park Benjamin. With her he had a daughter, Gloria, at the age of 45.
He died at the age of 48 from protracted pleurisy and blood poisoning. (www)

Dude...it was the perfect reaction video actually! I don't get reaction videos mostly these days! Reactors these days listen to an unheard song and they stop at every amazing thing sung to make an obvious comment about what's happening! It's like they think we are there because we want their non expert opinion on what's going on! For me, unless you're a vocal coach, I'm not here to listen to them analyze what's going on! As i see it, you can only hear a song for the first time once! The best reaction videos to me are those that allow me to hear that song vicariously through you, hearing it for the first time! I've heard this version a thousand times but I cried right along with you! I like your format. Talk about the song as you know it or do research on who did it before and why, listen to the song in its entirety, then discuss it! Keep up the good work

A Didimalgia. You understand italian language. Please, listen the song" ADAGIO", but in italian language ( italian lirics). The song is great . Great lirics. Great voice of Lara Fabian!

    Hello Didy.
Thank you for your sincere reaction! I like the way you express your point of view: unlike some other reactions, you don't try to say what people expect you to say.
When it comes with Lara Fabian, I attended to 3 concerts of her in the late 90s and in the early 00s: she is more stunning in reality (if it is possible). Indeed, she can repeat flawless performances during the whole concert. Moreover, the sound is far better in live.
The only regret I could have about her concerts was they were too short (hardly more than an hour), and Lara was very strict on the timing (she knew she had more concerts to come, and then she wanted to be in a good shape for the next concerts).
I bought my tickets for her 2022 world tour: I don't expect her from being as good as she was 20 years ago, but she is still the greatest voice in the world in my opinion

She does the best female cover of this song, love Lara’s voice it’s flawless. Another artist who does a great cover of this song is a young English tenor named Jonathan Antoine, he’s amazing

The three Lara Fabian videos you commented are from the same concert (Montreal 1999) and the entire concert is EPIC!!. Her voice and the emotion she puts into her songs takes her to another level. To appreciate an other aspects of her, I suggest two videos very different and more focused on her as performer.

Hello from France... If you don't know before, it's complicated. An angel on earth who beats the lacrimal glands. There are great artists in this world... But for me, she's just the best by far... In many languages, she is able to transmit all the emotions directly into people's souls . She is a passionate hard worker who gives everything for her audience. Unfortunately it is discovered late by many people. You are one of the lucky ones. 🙏👏👌

Hi Didy, you're not the only one Lara does this to. Yes, she has this power because she is in this case, the pinnacle of interpretation on a stage. As Fedor, a great admirer of Lara, often says, she gives everything on stage, she is 100% for the song and her audience. It's all in her voice, she conveys emotions like no other. It's not opera but the feeling is the same. I guess you are very interested in singers because you seem to know a lot of them and you make the effort to go to the source of the songs. Not everyone does this, so you can compare and give an informed opinion. I'm glad you discovered Lara and we're going to go a long way together to listen to this great performer and singer.

Thanks Didy! Just the reaction i presumed it would be 😁 Welcome to the family... I saw this concert first time about 20 years ago. I remember being in awe almost all the time. I couldn't speak afterwards in many hours. I had a lump in my throat as soon as i tried to recall what i just witnessed then. Thank god i watched the first time alone without my wife...🤣 No, she actually love this concert almost as much as i do. I got musicality in my genes (thnx mom dad), and started taking music lessons age 6. I would say that this performance is so close to perfection as it in humanly is possible. I've watched and listened this about 1000 times and still can't find one single note or gesture or sound or movement to be wrong or to correct. And Lara's voice, oh man. What to say.
It's just crazy gorgeous. In every area of her range. For me this is even better than "Je suis malade" which is also unbelievable performance. As you found out it's almost impossible to watch Lara without having teary eyes. I dont' know if it's her voice, the songs, her soul, her looks and performance or something else. Possibly the whole package and knowledge of that fact that there is no one else in this planet to deliver the same feeling...it's surreal. But it is a priviledge to witness this all.
But keep digging. You have few more songs to find...hah. Lara's debyt album from 1991... and year 2022 now...So...about 14 or 15 albums...it takes couple of beers or what ever refreshment 😜

J'aimerai beaucoup, car j'adore tes réactions spontanées et sincères, que tu réagisses à Lara reprenant la légendaire interprétation de Barbara Streisand Papa, can't you hear me and a piece of sky.
