  • Gundam exists to sell Gunpla. The cooler the Gundam series and its mecha are, the more likely you'll buy them as Gunpla. So... they decided to cut out the middle man, and make a Gundam anime about Gunpla. What's up with that!? Does it work? I talk about Mr. Ral a whole bunch on this latest Gundam Timelines!

The first season of Build Fighters is a fucking master work. likely in part cause, I don't think they really expected it to work so it just kinda does what ever, and ends up being a HUGE amount of fun in the process. The second season ... kinda misses the point ... but I don't think it's 'terrible' I mean .. SEED Destiny, G Reco, and the first season of Build Divers still exist, so there is absolutely less watchable, and way worse Gundam out there.
Build Fighters also got me back into building. something I hadn't done since Gundam Wing first really brought Gundam to the west, and indecently, one of the discord groups I'm in, really only exists BECAUSE we all loved the first season. Effectively, the first season of Build Fighters got me some new friends and a revived a great hobby, as cringe as that sounds. It even got me to make my own custom builds for the first time. One of which is a kit bash made ALMOST exclusively of the old Wing 1/100 kits (only thing not Wing is the double V-Fin I stole off the Nu Gundam), that I namde Viper, cause i use a color for the majority of it that is really only used on cars. Plum Crazy Purple case anyone is interested, although my favorite is a 1/144 IBO kit bash I call Therion.
as for recent Gunpla .... >.> I buy in 'bulk' ... to a degree .... but RX-78-2 The Origin Version, Gundam Marchosias, and the MG Gundam Barbatos are my most recent 3.
I've also started picking up the odd SD. only the CS frame ones though, I got a non CS frame SD and it SUCKS. The CS Frame SDs are SO MUCH NICER, though the majoirty of mine CS Frame SD, all 4 of them ... aren't Gundam. They are Super Robots. MajinKaiser, Shin Getter Robo and GaoGuyGar, the lone Gundam of the group is the Freedom.

Build fighters is definitely an anime that took me by surprise, it’s not ground breaking by any means but they definitely put care and effort into the show with an understanding of what makes us love gunpla and why we wish gunpla battles was real.
Build fighters try….was okay, definitely not better than the first season, but it was still entertaining.
And then we get to build divers……god I wish I could forget about it, it’s a god awful mess.
Build divers rerise is a direct opposite of build divers and is surprisingly really good, with actually having more interesting built gunpla, a group of characters that don’t really look like theyd be a team becoming a really good team over time, and overall just downright entertaining. I’m hesitant to say it surpasses build fighters, but it definitely comes close to matching its level.

I only recently got into gunpla about a year ago mostly because of Bandais 30 Minute Missions line of kits. I have been into modelling, specifically Warhammer 40k, for about 12 years now, and I liked the gundam series I did watch, and the mechs were cool as hell, but the overly stylized main character gundams never really made me want to buy one, especially for steep prices. I really liked the idea of grunt suits, the mass produced rank and file, so I got some of the 30MM kits and loved them. Now my little collection is made out of a GM Ground Type, a Zaku High Mobility, a Leo, a basic Zaku II, and the GM Sniper K-9 from Build Fighters as well as half a dozen 30MM models. If and when I get more kits they are more than likely to be the grunt suits of various series because I like that aesthetic. I'm calling my small squad of mobile suits the Chump Blockers.

The premise of the series is very similar to that of Angelic Layer, and many people said that it was ashame that (at the time) there were no toys tied to Angelic Layer and how much it would sell, specifically comparing it to Bandai's Gunplas.
So it is no surprise that when they did a similar idea, gunpla sold like hotcakes.
Additionally, I like the cameo characters. It kinda feels like those people who suffered for so long finally got to live in a universe where they're not under constant war 24/7.

I'd like to give a friendly reminder that GUNDAM BUILD SERIES IS GOING TO TURN 10 ON OCTOBER 7TH! MARK YOUR CALENDARS, FOLKS! 😆😆😆
Gundam Build Series is one of my favorite Gundam series that I've been following since its inception. I love how the show and the toys made use of its meta elements from the proper Gundam shows and how they use custom versions of existing gunplas.
I also love how GBF also had a neat cameo of pre-existing Gunplas from Gunpla-based installments like Beginning Gundam (Gunpla Builders) and Perfect Gundam (Plamo Kyoshiro)
With Build Series having its 10th Anniversary soon, I wish there would be a new crossover project that involves ALL of the protagonists and have them further explore Reiji's origins and the El Divers. Heck, having cameos from Gundam Breaker, Gunpla Builders, and Plamo Kyoshiro would be neat as a celebration of Gunplas.
If it were up to me, I wish there would be an Extreme Gundam variant in Build Series so that it'd goad Bandai into making and reissuing more Extreme Gundam kits since its also my favorite Gundam. 😆😂

I had watched _Gundam SEED_ and _Gundam 00_ before _Build Fighters_ , so I knew a bit, not not a lot, about the deep lore of Gundamology. It's a lot, since it started in 1979, and unlike _Star Wars_, never really stopped (thankfully). Yes, not all of them are hits, but most are. I think we need to be thankful for predecessor series (and models) for giving Sunrise and Bandai the blueprints for more successful series (and models). _Beginning G_ let Sunrise test what would and would not work for _Build Fighters_ , and with _Try_ they tried to go more _G Gundam_ . When that didn't work as well, after the mixed reception of _Battlelogue_ , they went VRMMO with _Build Divers_ . I think that didn't work as well as it should have because they spent so much time on particular plot threads and not on their characters. I like how the first arc built up the world of _GBN_ while also reflecting the experiences of both building gunpla and of joining a new MMO. I didn't like how the final arc focused a bit too much, and unrealistically, on responding to a growing data problem -- there are test servers and backups for just this sort of thing, and GMs respond very differently from what is shown. The result is that the stakes don't feel real, so the whole arc lacks the weight that _Build Fighters_ had. And when the stakes feel wrong, so do the characters. With _Re:Rise_ , you still had an MMO setting, but the stakes were ramped up to an incredible degree. Everything felt weighty, and character development made you cheer for each character, wanting to return for the next episode. It was undeniably a _Build_ series, but it also had _Mobile Suit Gundam_ stakes, making it an odd but working mix. Which also makes _Re:Rise_ one of the better-received _Build_ series right beside _Build Fighters_ .
Yes, there will be more _Build_ type series coming, but the mainline _Mobile Suit Gundam_ stories with high stakes and war themes won't be going away either. They are the mainstay of this massive franchise, that has kept it going for over 40 years. Why stop now? It's basically a license for Bandai and Sunrise to continuously print money, and even a certain virus hasn't slowed them down much. I'm thankful, since the quality on Western shows and movies has dropped significantly. _Gundam_ , at least, can keep on going.
In recent years I have looked for and watched a lot of the UC series. I have also seen some of the more recent entries, like _Unicorn_ and _Thunderbolt_ . I usually enjoy the different characters and settings, and the cool mecha designs also keep me coming back.

Much in the same way if YGO had Kaiba's tech or even better the Solid Vision system this would be a world wide sport TODAY. Gunpla would be serious business because people can break all of your hard work and you have to be commited to building.

Its funny. Don't get me wrong, I am a big fan of the mainline UC timeline, but I would be lying if I said that it was my favorite. My two favorites are unironically G-Gundam and Build Fighters. It comes down to the battles for me. Competition battling with both parties fighting because they enjoy it always get my blood hotter than simple fights for survival. I always love those warrior characters more too, especially when they are put up against one of those reluctant soldier types. The conflict always rattles the soldier and even if they die the warriors are almost always an influence on the soldier going forward.

The only memories I have because I was still very young was of a sort of country club the friend was a member to that and he also either sold toys or designed them or made them. But all I remember was down in the basement there was a room for kids and there was a wall lined with little arcade like machines that all had Gundam like games on them if I'm remembering correctly again I was still young but thats what I think it was just a wall of Gundam themed arcade cabinets in the basement of a country club lol

Gundam Build Series Ranking (based on everyone's opinions) :
    1. Build Fighters
    2. Build Divers Re:Rise (close to 1st)
    3. Build Fighters Try
    4. Builder Beginning G (close to 5th)
    5. Build Divers
P.S. : Personally, while I do think that the gunpla-damaging aspect from Build Fighters with the Plavsky Particles shenanigans could give more impact to the players, I do also think that it's not quite as realistic as GBN, which used a 3D scanned model of your gunpla without a physical manipulation nor alteration of your scanned gunpla.
This is also why I kinda bummed out when Build Divers introduced GPD (which is basically just like what we see in Build Fighters) as a predecessor of GBN. 3D scanning your gunpla is way more realistic than physically controlling your gunpla with a magic crystal or something like that. Another -1 for Build Divers for me, I guess 🙄 But the thing is, that episode was pretty much the best episode of Build Divers 😂🤣

    • @Sorain1
      @Sorain1 Před rokem

Honestly, I think a series that has normal 'scanned in' fights with an underground/high steaks circut of full on 'trashes your model' fights showing up some times would be good. Frame it as an older system that got phased out because it's more expensive to run and hard on people's model kits, but have a sub-culture akin to the street racing 'for pinks' scene. Then again, I'm also the nutcase that wants essentially 'Gunpla battles, but it's a team game with a performance/parts value points system and team budgets' as a series format. So you can have some fun pilots and a strategist coordinating them on each side... also so you can have some real fascinating 'is this worth the points?' questions on assorted Gundam UC/AU technologies and the fun of points updates and balance changes that are so much a part of any long standing game. (Should I just go with EXAM or is ZERO system worth the points cost?)

    • @alfianfahmi5430
      @alfianfahmi5430 Před rokem

@@Sorain1 That's literally what happened in Build Divers, bruh 🗿 It's way more plausible to make GBN in real life than making Plavsky-powered arcade game. I mean, what was Plavsky particle even made from? Radioactive crystals??? That shiet would be very unsafe if you're using it for a commercial arcade game 😂🤣😂🤣

So I didn't start with the beginning of the series. I actually started with rerise thanks to captain zeon and his mobile suit. And I was suddenly swallowed into what's basically yugioh but gundam. Rerise so far to me is the best of the series. It's a very mature children's show and I love it alot. It still shows the horror of war, extinction and ptsd of all forms.
I really enjoyed it and it's gotten me into kitbashing despite being terrified of it. I highly reccomend this story if normal gundam is to dark. It's a great starter in the shape of "here's what you can expect in some stories".

Build Fighters honestly reinvigorated my love for mecha shit (and Gundam in particular) after having dropped it when Gundam Seed was being shown on Toonami back in the day. I still don’t really catch up with anime in general as often as I want to, but Build Fighters was just this really fantastic, pretty light anime with relatively low-stakes and some absolutely *fantastic* action scenes due to the fact that all the mechs were really just models.
I watched Build Fighters Try and, yeah, it just wasn’t as good. It has some amazing moments, like the Tryon 3, but otherwise just isn’t as good.

  • @draketheduelist

I liken Gundam Build Fighters to the Yugioh of Gunpla, which isn't a bad thing, seeing as I like Yugioh. Both have highly iconic casts of unique, fun, and cool characters. Both insist that their particular corner of geek culture will essentially inexplicably replace all other hobbies. Both games use their mechanics to illustrate what kind of characters their players are. Heck, both even have a protagonist who is extremely skilled but too much of a wimp to fight on their own, thus putting the weight of combat on the shoulders of a more assertive character. (I can't have been the only one to notice that...)
As someone who had very little exposure to Gundam by the time I saw Build Fighters (I had seen Build Divers, about half of 00, about 10% of 0079, and about 5% of Seed and Wing each by this point), I felt *VERY* adrift in references I didn't get. Now that I'm on the far end of 00 (including the movie), Re-Rise, IBO, and Origin, I've been rewatching the Build Series to see if I get the references. Either stuff is still going over my head, or I don't see not being in on the jokes as being that detrimental to the experience. Fighters is generally kind enough to explain its more exotic references. Divers *loves* its obscure trivia and in-jokes, to the point where at least one major fight hinges on knowing how the Unicorn Gundam works. Re-Rise seems content to do its own thing as far as Gundam goes, though be warned that a working knowledge of what happened in Divers is critical to getting the full experience.
Do I feel that the Build series is a good intro to Gundam? Well it's absolutely not *representative* of Gundam, but that may not be a bad thing depending on how you're wired. If you want to know if Gundam proper is right for you, go IBO if you prefer raw human characters or 00 if you dig complex worldbuilding. I'm apparently a big weirdo in that I really gravitated towards the Build series. In fact, the Build series is home to my favorite Gundam installment to date: Re-Rise. To be perfectly honest, the 'proper' Gundam installments tend to get too politically obnoxious for my tastes when their message invariably becomes what I like to call "war has cooties". If you know Gundam, you know what I'm talking about. That moment where the anti-war message gets so blatant that it smacks its own characters around with rolled-up newspaper for daring to fight for *any* reason, even if the characters have a point in context. Looking at you, Marina Ismail... If you feel similar, rest assured that the Build installments aren't about getting particularly sanctimonious. It's all in good fun, even in-universe.
Besides, Gundam is always, always, always at its best when it's about people, and IMHO the Build installments are the writer's sandbox to play with characters. Even the widely-disliked Divers has some really satisfying character moments in spite of having plot twists a third grader could see coming... but I'll save that for the comments section of a future Divers video.

Gundam Build Fighters is not "Gundam", and to be honest, it's not trying to be and it works very well. It's in my opinion the most "fun" Gundam anime. Watching it makes me happy and enthusiastic about every episode coming out. Yeah, the stakes are considerably less than an actual war, but there's a reason why the Slice of Life genre of anime is one of the most popular ones. It feels good watching a bunch of friends building Gunpla and enacting badass space battles between their "babies". Watching Reiji and later Sekai discover the joy of building and playing with Gunpla made me actually try building Gunpla (and also made me perpetually in Gunpla backlog hell). It's a chill show that I'd greatly recommend to watch with people unfamiliar to Gundam even if some of the in jokes fly over their head. And if they seem interested in that suit you can point out where that's from and maybe that'll pique their interest in watching more of it.
It's my favorite Gundam anime for the simple reason that it gives me joy while watching it. War dramas has it's perks, but normal kids playing with toys just invokes the same feeling of watching Beyblade or Bakugan all those years ago that makes it hit different.
Build Fighters is 10/10, a must watch for all Gundam Fans and Try is a very solid 8/10 that while flawed is still just as passionate and fun.
