- Today I'm creating an alla prima oil painting of Lois van Baarle, aka Loish, in the style of John Singer Sargent. I'll also be talking about a breakthrough I had with this piece, achieving flow state while painting, and how I adapted a technique from artist Suchitra Bhosle to make that happen.

As a portrait painter myself, Sargent is one of my idols. Thanks for showing the reference photo -- always helpful to see.
Quite Sargentistic, Chelsea! You can definitely see it in the eyes, an economy of brush strokes. Wonderful job!!!
Thank you Shawn! :D Sargentistic? The highest of compliments! Now to just keep making paintings that push even closer to that goal.
It really is a privilege to witness the painting coming to life!
I love how you set up your stream and the quality of the audio too, fine artist are criminally underrating their video quality production.
You ma’am are a treasure trove for us beginner! 🙏🏻
I premix a whole tube of paint in a tiny mason jar with a slow drying recipe of different mediums. Learned from Mark Carder. I'm still a beginner, but it's what I started with. Red, blue, yellow, burnt umber and white are all I use. So of course I'm mixing lots of my own colors!
Beautiful painting. It really does emulate the Sargent feel. Very enjoyable to watch you create the piece. Thank you for uploading the video.
Thank you so much 😀I am so flattered, I'm glad it captured that Sargent spirit. 😍
I love it. The subject just glows
Loved this, flowing loose brushwork, very impressed, Norrie Scotland
Thank you Norrie! I cannot *wait* to make more like it. It was just so much fun and the paint did exactly what I wanted it to. What a dream, right? 😂
What a Beautiful video ✨
This was so fun to watch, and I learned a lot about oil painting too. Great video!
Love this painting. Thank you - so glad I found you on You Tube!! xx
Beautiful painting. Thanks Chelsea!
So much to be excited about here!
Thank you, Gary! :D I'm tickled pink. Now just have to make more 'just' like it!
This is fantastic!
Excellent result.
Beautiful work!
Such a cute little girl. I'm so happy you took the time to capture her sweet face.
Also, i rarely use oil. medium. Just gamsole all the way until the end awhich is the only time I use straight paint. I am interested in trying to mix some oil with it now.
Thanks for this insight. You are very generous with your help.
Nice video and info. I did Suchitra Bohsle’s workshop as well through Sentient. Your observations were pretty much the same as mine.
Sargent basically just used linseed oil so you shouldn't be too worried about the medium.
Awesome and beautiful piece! Thanks for sharing it with us ^^
My pleasure 😊I'm so glad you like it, and thank you for the kind words! :D
That's a lovely piece! It really is very Sargent.
Got a quick peak at the floral still too! :)
Eeeee! Thank you! :D Now to just put in 10,000 more hours toward that end. 😂 Also, yes -- that floral piece is slowly but surely coming along. I can't wait until it's done and I can share it outside of Patreon!
Excellent work! Beautiful painting!
Thank you very much! 😍
Wowwa lots to learn. Ty
👏🖤
WONDERFUL.
Excellent video!!!
Thank you very much!
Good job. Portraits Inc.is your goal.
Amazing work! Thank you for making this channel. Don't stop, pls
❤❤
I used to layout a penciled grid to ensure correct placement of the subjects' facial features but found this tedious...now I use a comparator mirror to get the face right and go from there. It's much faster and a simple comparator mirror setup can be constructed easily. What are your thoughts on using such a device? I enjoy your videos. Ken in the Philippines.
Bravo
Hope you don't take this as overly critical as I enjoy your videos and artwork. But, in claiming to be an alla prima painter, you state that this painting (done in one sitting start to finsh)wasn't usual for you. That is what "alla prima" or " wet on wet" is. It's not simply painting in an expressive or loose style. That said, this painting was an excellent example of "alla prima " painting. Beautiful work, look forward to seeing more.
Please do a self portrait ?
Amazing work! Just an FYI, that ig link goes to a different user lol. At least I think.
Thank you!!! At some point my link got condensed and copying and pasting messed it all up. It should point to my actual account now. :D Now I just need to go and check back through all the other videos.........🙃
@@ChelseaLang no problem haha. And I already follow you on ig -- amazing work.
Chelsea Lang Sargent
I always wonder... men paint women and women paint women. Men aren't the subject of paintings much. Wonder why. Great Channel!
Far away from Sargent.
I love your story and your content but there is no way you unironically say "drawl."
Beautiful work!
