Backstory: 2 years ago, as a Christmas gift, my wife bought me your Christmas Sheet Music of this tune. I thought, yeah, no way I could play this!! I'm still dealing with tendonitis, something I am mindful of when I perform. Still, David- you looked like a "machine" to me, and I thought man, I'm inspired to give this a go! I fell in love with the arrangement. I had to play it. I gave it a go in 2021, but the tendons in my left arm would scream at me. I couldn't get through it. I put the sheet music away.
Still, David's version was calling me. I had to give it another go this year. I memorized it. Then starting to train my left arm to get through it. I slowed the tempo down a bit which helps. But there are moments in the tune where I take the opportunity to stretch my left arm! That's my tendons are screaming "stop!"😱 I recorded it this morning: czcams.com/video/D97XyL1EVs4/video.html. ML Champion it actually is pretty easy!!! I was expecting the sheet music to be impossible but it’s really not. It’s just cuz of how fast he plays it. He gives some tips to make it easier in the sheet music!
It’s actually not that hard to play, it’s just that when people play a simple song, they try to be Mozart by playing fast and adding 5 million extra keys
I will practice how ever many years it takes day and night to get on that level :)

"Shchedryk" (from Ukrainian: Щедрий вечiр, "Bountiful Evening") is a Ukrainian shchedrivka, or New Year's carol, known in English as "The Little Swallow". It was arranged by composer and teacher Mykola Leontovych in 1916, and tells a story of a swallow flying into a household to sing of wealth that will come with the following spring. "Shchedryk" was originally sung on the night of January 13, New Year's Eve in the Julian Calendar (December 31 Old Style), which is Shchedry Vechir. Early performances of the piece were made by students at Kyiv University.
It has become a favorite carol heard everywhere at Christmas but I wonder how many people know it originated in Ukraine. Thanks for explaining, Edward.

I have always had dreams of being able to play this, every year I always try and practice the easy version of Christmas Carol of the bells on piano so I can play it for my family. I’ve had a dream that once I found a piano in public and I played this version and everybody just stood there with their mouth wide open, gasping at how beautiful this is. I played piano for almost 8 years now and there is no living where I can get the strength to be able to master this. His finger strength must be amazing to be able to constantly do those melodies nonstop.

Suche schon zwei Stunden nach einem authentisch klingenden und wirkenden Instrumental, Geige, Celtic, Modern, alles durch. Jetzt habe ich gefunden was ich suche. David Hicken, einen Namen den man sich merken kann.
I can FINALLY play this! It isn't perfect, but I am just about at full speed with a few mistakes here and there. I have been learning piano for about 3.5 years and working on this for around 5-6 months. It won't take you a lifetime if you try. I think I have easily played it over 1000 times. Now I just keep going and going. My hands scream to stop, but I make them keep going.
I Already posted this a s a reply but then i noticed more people had commented on the lady who was in the video.
I personally think she is there to represent and bring forth more of the underlying meaning in the piece, She represent the beauty contained within the sheets. The songs grace channeled into her, every musical note played and produced from the piano becoming her. She is the life force or the essence of the peice. Her "jaunt throughout the woods" the symbolic meaning of the pieces allure and elegance (her) that in my view is contained in such a violent tempo (the woods).
Correct me if I'm wrong.

Hello everyone! I found this on a website from an interview with David hicken, and here's what he said The Bell Carol is about : ( I hope it isn't fake!) DH: The idea was to have the story be a dream. A young lady discovers an old music manuscript and plays a few notes on the piano. She then enters a dream where she witnesses a performance of this piece. Later, she finds herself in the woods where she falls asleep in her dream. It was a challenge to fit all of our ideas into just a few minutes. We also had time constraints and had to film in just one day.
This one of my favorite pieces omg I'm sitting here watching with a huge grin on my face THANK YOU!

IT is amazing, very cool. The song is based on a traditional folk chant. It was associated with the coming New Year, which, in pre-Christian Ukraine, was originally celebrated with the coming of spring in April. (This explains why the original Ukrainian text speaks about a swallow returning and lambs being born.) So it is the most famous ukrainian melody in the world.
