    Hey guys! Do keep in mind that the excellent tricks and processes shown on this video apply only to raster layers not vector layers. It happened to me earlier today that the color block and wand selection was not working and the reason why was because I had the line art on a vector layer :P

      Hey I’m really new to this so I’m sorry if this question seems stupid. You seem pretty well versed so I thought I might ask you… I’ve started doing my line art on vector layers as well so that I can more easily manipulate them after they’re drawn to correct them. Is there a quick and easy was for me to copy then line art from a vector layer to a raster layer so that I can then do my flats like this video shows? Thanks in advance if you have any tips. I’ve been a traditional artist for years and moving to digital has been really challenging for me. I appreciate literally any help lol

    This is such a gem of a video. I'm saving it n will refer it forever!
    Also love that he just talked through the whole thing like talking to himself n not like a strict tutorial, which overloads with info even when the artist is figuring out.

    What was the silhouette on the bottom for if it ends up being completely covered? It might have been different back then not sure but not with the Vector line Layers you can still use the fill with vector line layer as reference without the silhouette. Im not sure if theres any more tricks that can applied by using the silhouette

    I don't understand the "refer to reference layer" thing with the fill tool. When I do it as shown, mine just fills in the entire picture (outside and inside the lines) with the skin color. It does that whether or not I am on the actual skin color layer. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong..?

    • @JonathanAlexMusic
      @JonathanAlexMusic Před rokem

      Maybe there are too many holes in your drawing, and the colors are bleeding out. You can either fill in the gaps with the color you wanna use manually to stop the bleeding, or you can simply go to the reference layer, use the magic wand with the "close gaps" set to full and move back to the color layer in order to fill the color in.

    • @fredcustodio5078

      For what I understand and based on my workflow, It makes my work more faster especially if you want to have layers for each part of the character and unsure of mood of color you are using , It gives you the whole silhouette of your character and it also ease my mind that I don't have to think of making another silhouette of other character parts later on like I said it eases my mind on my workflow, now after that process, I'll enjoy painting what's on the inside of the silhouette and not think about having to paint outside the shape

    • @jacobnewell4633
      @jacobnewell4633 Před 2 lety +5

      Not having an under color does make the process a little slower since you have to trace the outside edges of the character for every color on the outside such as the coat, hair and pants in this pic. It also makes sure you don't forget any spaces and have a gap/hole in your colors that go through to the background. using it makes flatting more efficient and gives you a cleaner result.

      His usual approach is actually way different than what he does in the video. If you look up one of his speedpaints or tutorials videos he's often using the blue flat color as an underpainting and leaves out some of the spots to shine through. its easier if i just link the video because i'm not that good at explaining.
      czcams.com/video/ELM7q4pDrvM/video.html&t
      He may make the flats he put above that underpainting layer a bit transparent in the next video and color pick from that or something. I think he has another tutorial where he does something similar with layer opacity.

    Does this also work on vector layers or just raster

    • @izarak_arts
      @izarak_arts Před 2 lety +1

      I believe the fill bucket only works on raster layers (won't swear 100% to that I could be remembering wrong). But you can use a vector layer for the lineart and set the vector layer as reference like he did with his lines. Or if you have more then 1 layer for your lines you can also put them in a group folder and set the folder to be referenced if you don't want to merge them.

    • @firstdondiego
      @firstdondiego Před 2 lety +2

      @@izarak_arts that is correct, fill doesn't work on vector layers. Nor does the gradient or blend tools.

    • @jacobnewell4633
      @jacobnewell4633 Před 2 lety +1

      While the bucket tool may not work on vector layers you can use it on your color layers set to raster and just have your line art be vector. So this process should work fine.

  • @jacobnewell4633
    @jacobnewell4633 Před 2 lety +2

    I find this multi-layer approach to be overkill. He could have all the flats on the same layer and select them when he wants to change or manipulate the colors. I do the flats. Duplicate that layer and then color the duplicate while leavening the original as a reference layer so I can select each color. Same thing but instead of 50 layers I use 2. But I do comics so maybe for some reason this is better for illustrators.

  • @paulpalmer545
    @paulpalmer545 Před 2 lety

    Does the color that he uses underneath the flats affect the flats? Or is it just to keep the colors inside the lines?? Someone please help

    • @jacobnewell4633
      @jacobnewell4633 Před 2 lety +2

      No. The layer that covers the entire character and the dog (the blue) doesn't effect the colors he puts over top it. He is just using as a guide so he doesn't go outside the lines when laying in his new colors.
