  • In Part 3 of this series, I give a very brief overview of HT antennas, the effect of poor antennas on reduced output power and why upgrading your HT antenna is a very good idea (In most cases).

KD7CKT, just getting back into my Ham Radio after 5 to 6 years out due to the Loss of my Father, N7JWF/AE7AD. When Dad had strokes and such I had to short sell the house in west Phoenix and liquidate his gear and mine in the move. Just got a Yaesu FT-60 at a local Pawn shop for less than $80! Happily, it came with the original dual band, rubber duck antennae, a completely dead NiMH battery which happily came back and so far holds a full charge and the repeaters here in Flagstaff. This HT had a few channels already programmed and after a week or so monitoring, I am now involved with one evening net. 23 years ago I was very active with the Arizona Repeaters Association both 2 meter/70cm and HF so there are many new digital aspects and repeaters and connected networks. I have printed off the ARA repeater lists but have also discovered a wonderful application called, Repeater Book which includes a bunch of Nodes and connected Networks and even a few private repeaters in northern Arizona. I am looking at getting one of the new table top discones that are so popular as I enjoy listening to Aircraft AM too and there's a lot of minerals and metals in the ground and trees here. I enjoy your channel and videos, they get right to the point. Thanks and 73's to the Ham Community once again.

I purchased a few antennas. The Abbree 33in tactical, yes it’s big but the people on Colorado connection can now hear me clear. I’ve tried a bunch, Diamond and Nagoya 771. For 12 bucks it was worth it. I know it’s not very practical but when I go for a hike, etc. it worth having in my backpack. Give it a shot.

I purchased a Signal Stick with the BNC connection for my KG-UV9P. I was not satisfied with the results when I used it for 2meters. The antenna that came with the radio performed better.
I’m looking for other options for now.
    Enjoying your videos.

for someone wanting High Power output (30+ watts) on an HT, better rethink that.
you really don't want that much RF energy that close to your head.
HT's are most commonly used being held next to the face for speaking and listening.

I don't recall mentioning that. But, I will keep your suggestion in mind.

I think you’ll find that the only radios that transmit more than 5W are Chinese radios. There’s a reason for this, China doesn’t care about stealing IP or following safe radiating power. In the 90s you could purchase 23cm (1.2GHz) HT radios and then they disappeared from the market. Why? The power and frequency was found to be unsafe.
You’ll also find that the difference in real world performance of 4W vs 5W vs 8W is not as significant as you might think.
      Edit:
Give your Malicious Fv**ing Junk a couple rounds for me. 💥🔫

@@KS6DAY I'm not saying that you were increasing the power output but @6:16 you mentioned amplifier and many other youtubers say they want an HT that outputs more than 5 watts or more than the false claims by china radios claiming more than 20 watts.
my comment was for those youtubers that want higher outputs of more than 5 to 10 watts in a HT.

Yes, please see if there's a way to determine performance gain from a tiger tail.

But just like tuning your antenna for the best swr, you also have to tune the tiger tail for the best swr.

See, I try to explain the same thing to people about power. If you really want to know what kind of power your pushing, check it with the damn antenna! Does it make sense to you to check it with a dummy load? It doesn’t to me… common sense people.
