    LEAD IN:
Busy New Delhi residents are finding tranquillity in Buddhist chanting.
The rhythmic mantras are offering practitioners a chance to be mindful and present in the moment.
    STORY-LINE:
    They chant in unison.
A group of six people from across the Indian capital, office workers, homemakers, students, people who belong to different faiths, gather to repeatedly chant Buddhist mantras.
Devotees say it brings practitioners spiritual solace or just a break from the cacophony of New Delhi's crowded streets.
Buddhism has a history of drawing outsiders: Hollywood celebrities, agnostics, Christians and Jews who have lost touch with their own religions, attracted by Buddhism's easy rituals and lack of dogma.
Now, Buddhist chanting has come to the upper-middle class enclaves of some of the most crowded, noisy and stressful cities in the world, drawing in thousands of Indians - most of them Hindu - in search of something to soothe their troubles.
At a recent chanting session in a middle-class New Delhi neighbourhood, participants quietly sat down on thin mattresses on the floor in the carpeted basement of a residential building, with their legs folded under them and hands joined in prayer.
Facing an ornate wooden altar that contains the Gohonzon - a scroll with the chant "Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo" inscribed on it that is venerated - they begin chanting.
Latecomers seamlessly join in, blending their voices with the ongoing rhythm.
Soon the tempo picks up speed and builds to a crescendo before slowing as the chanters gather their breath.
The repetitive mantra is accompanied by the clicking of wooden beads and one of the chanters striking a gong at intervals.
" I was like, over forty years old when I started chanting and that's when I realized its never too late I found a way of life that I could achieve my dream,"
says Ruma Roka, aged 54, who runs an institute for young people with hearing disabilities.
She spends her work day teaching young deaf adults, training them to find mainstream jobs in banking and hospitality.
Roka's work is physically and emotionally draining and after a long day, she looks forward to her chanting session.
"They (the young deaf adults) have gone through so much rubbish and torture in their lives, kids are not getting employed, I wouldn't not be able to survive. I would run.. I would have a compassion deficit. When I go home and I chant I appreciate my life," Roka says.
The Buddhist phrase "Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo" means the law of cause and effect.
Repeatedly chanting the phrase was started by a 13th century Japanese priest named Nichiren Daishonin, who believed that it would enable chanters to realize the "inner Buddhahood" that lies dormant within every human being.
The chanting itself does not require much.
Practitioners sit facing a blank wall or in a place where they will not be distracted.
Ideally, they would face an altar containing the Gohonzon.
Some loop a string of beads over their hands that they put together in prayer.
Chanting is done with the eyes open, with the beads helping to focus on the sonorous sound of the invocation.
Hindus who chant on a regular basis say they see no conflict with their traditional religious beliefs because the basic tenets of all religions are the same.
Gaurav Saboo, 34, works as an executive in an international bank and puts in long hours at the office each day
He has been chanting for 15 years, and credits the practice for his success.
After he cleared his accountancy examinations at the young age of 21, his career has soared.

Its most dramatic step toward the mainstream came early last month when Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi named a new coalition cabinet, formally allying his long-governing Liberal Democratic Party with New Komeito, a political party created by Soka Gakkai in 1964.
Public opinion polls have shown widespread disapproval of New Komeito's entry into the government. For many Japanese, still shaken by the 1995 nerve gas attack in the Tokyo subways by another once-obscure sect, Soka Gakkai has many of the markings of a cult, and crosses the strict divide between church and state established after World War II.

Many people uneasy about its rise regard both the religious group and the political party as little more than the personal instruments of Soka Gakkai's longtime leader and now honorary chairman, Daisaku Ikeda. An enigmatic figure who has called himself the ''anti-authority'' but clearly relishes meeting world leaders, Mr. Ikeda, 71, travels the world with his message of peace, even as his followers have sometimes used violence to deal with critics.

That Buddhist chanting originated in Sanskrit or Prakrit (Pali) in Buddha 's days in India. I am wondering why Indians in Delhi are reciting in Japanese? And Horengekyo 【法蓮華)means Lotus Sutra (Saddhama Pundrika Sutra in Sanskrit). Some Buddhist sects are denying the originality of it as Buddha's teaching.

      @rishabhrox1 Před 2 lety +1

@@saddha1 Wrong. The fact that you had to immediately draw a comparison to Hinduism shows that you know little about Buddhism and its Dharmic connection to Hinduism since time immemorial.
Anyways, Hinduism exists in the hundreds of languages of India, with Sanskrit only taking prime importance because of Vedas, but there are numerous texts in local languages which people still speak today like Awadhi, Braj, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Indonesian, Thai, Javanese and guess what...even PALI, which Buddhists find so important themselves.
So the comparison with Hinduism was unnecessary.

      @Khine Nein Lunn
Indians in Delhi are globalized citizens, much like Indians in most of the metro cities like Bengaluru, Chennai and Mumbai. Such people often are exposed to foreign cultures more so than the rest of Indians and hence, they feel comfortable and actually really like incorporating elements of cultures from outside India in their lives.
Buddhism did originate in India, however today, India is not a powerful enough country even for Hindus, let alone Buddhists who today are very miniscule in number. Indian Hindus still consider Buddha as part of their pantheon of Gods but....they have lost their cultural touch with him because of absence of a strong Buddhist faith and culture in a significant majority of people anymore.
Because of this, Buddhism today is seen more iconically with North East Asian countries like China, Japan, Korea or South East Asian countries like Vietnam, Thailand or Cambodia, since it is a stronger part of the people's culture there. And this is why, Indians themselves are learning of Buddhism back again from these countries. It's almost like a karmic circle completing, first India propagated Buddhism to the East, now the East is bringing Buddhist philosophies back to India, a perfect example of cultural balance and harmony.

If you wish to free yourself from the sufferings of birth and death you have endured since time without beginning and to attain without fail unsurpassed enlightenment in this lifetime, you must perceive the mystic truth that is originally inherent in all living beings. This truth is Myoho-renge-kyo. Chanting Myoho-renge-kyo will therefore enable you to grasp the mystic truth innate in all life.

Hi... You can start chanting using you tube... First listen to the words and then start chanting. Chant as per your own speed and comfort and set your own timing. Also Google the Bharat Sokka Gakkai.
In the meantime, with your permission, after you send me an email, I can connect you with a Member in your city. They'll be able to explain it more and give you a prayer book that will help you with your meditation.

Chant wherever and whenever you want it. In the beginning, you may no be able to control your mind. But as you chant more and more NAM MYO HO REN GE KYO your mind become serene and you begin to focus on the Gohonzon (mantra/NAM MYO HO REN GE KYO). This state of life is called HOKKE ZANMAI which is the most enjoyable state of faith devoted in the Gohonzon (NAM MYO HO REN GE KYO).

Pooja Sharma Anytime, my friend. Chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo (practice Daimoku) works all the time. Citing two most important chapters of the Lotus Sutra (doing Gongyo) is normally in morning and evening.
A mind now clouded by the illusions of the innate darkness of life is like a tarnished mirror, but when polished, it is sure to become like a clear mirror, reflecting the essential nature of phenomena and the true aspect of reality. Arouse deep faith, and diligently polish your mirror day and night. How should you polish it? Only by chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo.

I am here trying to point out the difference between poison and medicine. We should not talk about what you think and what I think but what Nichiren Daishonin taught us.

      Don't be so arrogant, please.
Be responsible for what you said! Provide the documented proof that supports your shallow view to slander Nam Myo horenge kyo.
I was in Soka Gakkai for almost 70 years. I am the last generation of the Toda school.
If you believed Nichiren Daishonin, how could you deny the advent of his life?
How can you even possibly pick the general point of view(Sou) while deny or ignore the specific point of view (Betsu)???
I left Soka Gakkai because the organization went against the will of Nichiren Daishonin.
After Soka Gakkai abandoned the one great secret law and redefined the three great secret laws, I could not slander the core doctrine of Nichiren Daishonin.
Before you give your wrong accusation to my comment, respect Nichiren Daishonin's will. Otherwise, you never get your enlightenment according to Nichiren Daishonin. Reply to Soya

I don't believe the cult organization that calls Nichiren Daishonin Buddhism as "Nichiren Buddhism" what slandering to Nichiren Daishonin. Toda sensei never call Nichiren.
    Always Nichiren Daishonin.
SGI hides Daishonin's true identity by calling him "Nichiren"
    SGI destroyed his core teaching.
You must chant the Daimoku of Three Great Secret Laws.
Study Gosho if you have time to read your leader's SGI sokaism.
I left Soka Gakkai because they deviated from the core doctrine of the Daishonin. I was a member of Soka Gakkai about for 70 years. This is so sad that I must criticize the organization I devoted.
