    Just weeks ago, my party had a run in with a group of drows and we ended up falling. My character rolled a 1 nature check and thought each one of us were dying, so he did what any warrior does. He *charged* into battle to deal the finishing blow or *die* .
    I managed to frighten two of them with an magic item and kill one. The surviving fighter helped me and killed the fourth one. Just after all that, we realized our teammates were just sleeping, not dead.

    OK, for this encounter i was playing a human monk way of the open hand ( we were all monks) and we had come across some scrolls, one of which was a scroll of the cantrip light ( i know a cantrip spell scroll) we had no luck selling it so it was kind of just on me and for some reason i decided to try and cast it.... as a monk.... so the DM said OK roll for arcana (nat 20) told me to roll on wild surge, person within 60 ft gets fly cast on them, casts on my shadow monk companion, he then proceeds to fly above the giant and hit it with crossbow bolts till it dies while my character is trying to not have a brain aneurysm
    (Fly is concentration I WAS NOT A SPELL CASTER)

    Hate to be THAT guy, but:
    *puts on reading glasses specifically bought so that I could unabashedly be "that guy", then pulls out rulebook*
    The drow poison from OotA requires you to fail the con save (DC 13) by 5 or more in order to fall unconscious. Given that the Storm Giant has a Con save of +10, failing by 5 or more would be impossible, even with a natural 1. This is done specifically so that ultra-powerful creatures cannot be felled by something as simple as basic poison. Now, one could rule that a natural 1 is a critical failure, but that brings up a different problem. Damaging an unconscious creature, even one knocked out by Drow poison, wakes them up. The first guard that successfully hit the giant would have immediately doomed everyone as the storm giant wakes up to find a bunch of little people poking it with needles.
    In conclusion: kek.

      @bricefos Před 6 lety +38

      Was it a stone giant or a storm giant? Because if it’s a stone giant a natural 1 is exactly what it would take to fall asleep

    • @Pompadourius
      @Pompadourius Před 6 lety +29

      Natural 1's are critical failures on saving throws though. Just as natural 20's on saves are critical successes. And the giant being unconscious would count as it being helpless, thus subject to coup de grace rules.

    • @DavvyChappy
      @DavvyChappy Před 6 lety +14

      While true that it's an automatic failure, it's a DMs discretion on whether or not that constitutes the added effect of the poison being activated, as it would be impossible RAW for someone with a high enough constitution to be affected, although, again, it's up to the DM.
      Also, there are no coup de grace rules in 5e. While an attack against an unconscious or paralyzed creature has advantage and will do maximum damage on a hit, it's very unlikely that a storm (or stone?) giant would be instantly killed by a single attack, and once it's damaged, it'll wake up, and the unconscious rules will no longer apply.
      Fun story, and it's totally reasonable to forget the rules in the moment of something funny happening, but I don't want anybody getting the idea that this is actually some secret tactic to kill a giant at level 2.

    Was DMing a party on an island continent that's rife with war. Our party starts off well with some chaos here and there. Long story short they are all wanted criminals and the monk wants to adopt an orphan. "I'm not sure if you're fit to be a parent." The caretaker says. "Don't worry I'm harmless as a fly." 5 minutes later he's helping his Bard and Barbarian friends burn down a major port city in the kingdom they are criminals to. So much for trying to be a lawful Good around a bunch of Chaotic Nuetrals.

    I actually have a pretty funny story for the Out of the Abyss campaign as well. None of the other players could ever figure out how to get out of the little cells we were kept in (we were all new players to the game). So i looked around my cell and found a fork under my bed. I then decided to pick-lock the cell with a fork. Everyone thought it would fail but i rolled a natural 20 and unlocked it with ease. I am a Goliath Barbarian. I then run to the nearest building like thing in the area and find our stuff in it. I had no weapons, just a fork and an enemy was guarding our stuff. So I charged him and stabbed him to death with a fork. The next time we played that campaign I played a Wood Elf Rogue and we ran into the giant 2 headed stone giant. I ran while my party decided they wanted to fight it. There was a bard, a cleric, and a ranger. Somehow we made it through with no heavy hitters. My entire party was unconscious when I ran back, shot the giant in the face with a poison tipped arrow and scared it away with a natural 20. I then stabilized my party and gave them each a healing potion.

    Okay my DND brethren I have a problem.
    I just hit Level 3 with my Dwarf Barbarian Grom and everything I do is lore appropriate.
    but I'm at roadblock right now you see in XGTE there's the New Paths for barbarian.
    the storm rage one will not fit into my dwarf barbarians back story but the ancestral guardian and the Zealot fit in perfectly. because his whole story is that his entire keep was killed by a ork war party that was teleported into his hold. ancestral Guardian I could probably say that it's the spirits of the last defenders roaming around in his head aiding him in his quest to find the princess of the keep who was the only one who survived the onslaught, other than Grom himself (plus it makes sense that dwarfs have ghost I come back dwarfs are very stubborn.)
    the Zealot path I could say it's Moradins rage at the death of an entire keep of his people is being channeled into his Champion Grom. this makes sense because Dwarven gods are very vengeful.
    problem is that I don't know which one to go to and I don't want to look at the stats and be like "oh that's what I want because that will make me stronger by x amount of damage points" what do you guys think?

    One time i was playing a campaign with some guys from school, and this necromancer had stolen some stuff from a store in town, so we went after this guy in his dark evil tower. There was nothing in the first floor, the second floor had these chests that flew open and they were full of disembodied hands, which surrounded us. Our Dragonborn threw our gnome bard (named tinklewidget fizzlespazz) across the room while tinkle sang a song that buffed us, when suddenly all of the hands fell dead. We reached the top floor and there was the necromancer standing over the body of an ogre. The necromancer disappeared And the ogre came back to life. It started to attack us, and at one point I, (a tiefling sorcerer) set my javelin on fire and threw it at the ogre, our halfing ranger shot three arrows at once (they all hit) and our Dragonborn fighter jumped on the ogre’s back and blinded it by stabbing it in the eyes, while Tinklewidget played the flute furiously in the background. The Dragonborn killed it by sliding under it and stabbing it in the crotch...

    Me: the stone giant literally can’t be knocked unconscious by drow poison because they need to fail the dc 13 con saving throw by 5 or more to fall unconscious and the giant has a plus 8 to con saving throws so they would just get the poisoned condition.

    • @discreative6603
      @discreative6603 Před 6 lety

      I believe proficiency and ability scores only improve the attack, not the damage. However, I think some spellcaster abilities can improve spell damage or at least the number of dice.

    • @ch3ls3ab0t6
      @ch3ls3ab0t6 Před 6 lety

      Stovie Weems When you roll to hit with a weapon, you add your ability score modifier plus your proficiency bonus (provided you are proficient with the weapon). When you roll for damage, you add your ability modifier, but not your proficiency bonus (unless you have an ability that allows you to do so). For a spell, you add your spell attack bonus (which is your spell casting ability modifier plus your proficiency bonus). You do not add your ability modifier to the damage unless the spell description says you do.
      If you're DM-ing, you should really read the handbook at the VERY least.

    20 seconds in the video, I had to stop watching. Not because the video is awful, but because I'm playing Out of the abyss right now! Leaving a like and saving the video to see it bout, don't know, next year maybe?

    I dunno i'd propably not have the giant fall unconcious after one hit, i mean the poison is strong enough for humanoids but a giant twice the size of even the orc in the drow prison.. hmm... also what is it with people giving up on Out of the Abyss? My Party also kinda just lost interest in Gracklstuck.
    Guess the pacing is just way off with barely anything happening early on that really puts pressure on the party.

      @snakept69 Před 6 lety

      I think it was wizards playing it safe. The main draw of Out of the Abyss is the alien underdark and they tone it down hard. Gracklstuck, besides the name is basically a more evil dwarven town.
      Also the initial hook is good, but the party should have a goal in the underdark besides escaping. It's not exciting, they should have to do something in there. Like find that sunlight blade relic before returning to the surface. Or finding someone else that was taken hostage and rescue them. Escaping works really well for the first few sessions but after that just feels like you are dicking around. Why bother with the Druegar? just sell your stuff and get out. Why bother with anything if all you are doing is escaping?
      Problem is encounters scale assuming you do all this stuff that is essentially meaningless. There should be something you really needed from them hence why who do this work. Even then it's kinda boring as all you are doing is being errand boy.

      Yeah it's just that it gives you no reason to even try to find out about the demonic corruption going on unless you randomly stumble upon a ritual or so the PCs have no idea what might even be remotely weird about the underdark, well more than usually that is. Most adventures either clearly define the big bad you are working against in the early parts of the campaign like Curse of Stradh or just are based on plot hooks that make your characters want to stay in the region and explore, while in OotA your first most logical goal is escape and get back to the surface/your settlement. There isn't even someone trying to hire you, all in all the story would be better fitting with a Call of Cthulhu style hook where you willingly go to the underdark to investigate the corruption.

    I understand that you're following RAW for poison however the DMG is just a source book and the DM has final say and regardless of lack of preparation a stone giant would get a bonus vs. the poison and the effect ends immediately when the giant takes damage.
    Further more the sleep poison works similar to the first level sleep spell and can only effect 5D8 hp. So regardless if the stone giant's save vs the effects of sleep poison he would not fall asleep.
    He might fight at a disadvantage but your logic on how this type of poison works is totally wrong.
    Let's start with placing an ancient red dragon in the place of your giant.
    Using the same rolls made a natural 20 to hit and the dragon rolls a 0ne to save vs the poison.
    Allowing the dragon to die in this way is the dumbest thing I've ever seen a person do.

      English is a Germanic language, so sometimes things from German come over to English. In German ie is pronounced more like ee and ei is pronounced more like I. I have always heard Tiefling pronounced like teefling. I have no idea where you're getting this other pronunciation.

      Jake Anderson To me, it just makes it less impressive. I’d rather hear how someone did something awesome, because they were actually clever instead of roll 20 to win.

      Scott S. The roll is only part of it, the other part is the description of the action, the description is the funny or the cool part but the roll just says if your funny or cool action worked or if it failed horribly
