  • We visited and spoke to Turks in a known street and "it's Istanbul" in London, one of the biggest Turkish communities in the UK, we had no idea that you can find everything here they would sell in Türkiye and the Turkish restaurants and cafe's here are superb. Welcome to Green Lanes in North London

AT LAST !!!!! Thank you to Mick & Trudie for showing Green Lanes. On visiting London people get drawn into the city/west end tourist traps, and end up leaving London complaining how expensive everything is. Not in Green Lanes you won't. As East Enders, we have been using Green Lanes every week for nearly 40yrs. It's 15-20mns drive, including traffic, from St Pauls/Square Mile business district and worth every bloody penny to eat out there and . From fresh daily hand made cakes/bread ( Bakers to use : Yasar Halim - Antepliler ) offering beautifully decorated & boxed fresh cream cakes for £3.50 each to even finding the Rare & Historic " Rum-Baba " doughnut, that sadly seems to have disappeared from English bakeries. Your spoilt for choice on where to eat dinner & the are a few "no go " restaurants you need to avoid, but as long as you avoid the ones near the train station and eat further up in the ones near/around Yasar Halim Bakers your be fine. Prices have gone up since Covid, but compared to me treating my visiting Canadian relatives to eating in Wagamama's costing 6 of us over £300 to all eating out along Green Lanes for less than £180, with doggy bags taken home because the was so much left over, you can enjoy a fantastic night cheaply & be reminded of how lovely the Turkish/people food are.

Lots of Turkish people in The Netherlands. They are very welcome immigrants and most of them very hard working entrepreneurs owning small businesses. Of course things like doner and lahmacun have become regular Dutch foods. The Turkish community seems to have managed to really intergrate in to the the country well, while keeping their own culture and identity alive.

It depends where you eat, there are lots of bad kebabs, doners etc. around turkey but if you know where to eat, you would absolutely like it. Also shop owners in different countries alter their food for their customers, doesn't matter where you're. That can make you like more food in your country because it's close to your used taste. I was in Berlin last week, I nearly hated all Turkish food I tried that but probably Berliners likes it. About portions, sadly turkey's economy getting worse and food quality, portions are dropping down.

Turkish culture has been understanding of the traditions and identities of different nations throughout history. The Seljuks created a Turco-Persian state. Jews were expelled from Spain and took refuge in the Ottoman Empire. Also, while there were sectarian wars in Europe, Christians were more peaceful in our land. We knew how to adapt and were able to combine many different cultures and languages within ourselves. No nation has ever descended from the sky suddenly. Can you tell us the identity of those who lived here 10,000 years ago and built Göbeklitepe? Be assured, each person takes something from the others. This is the rule of the human history, accept it and stop crying.

I would like your assistance in suggesting appropriate ways to refer to the fusion of Turkish and Kurdish cultures or identities. I have learned that in Turkey, such fusion is commonly referred to as "Türkiyeli." However, I am curious to know what would be an appropriate translation to English. Anyway, the shortened form of Turkish citizen or Turkish resident as "Turkish" is also eligible for me. Finally, it makes "Turkish Kurdish" who is a descendant ethnically Kurdish and has Turkish resident or comes just from Turkey.
As a respectful and curious individual, I would like to use appropriate terms when referring to this fusion of cultures or identities. I appreciate any insights or suggestions you can provide.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
