this is the best tutorial ive seen on dreads. kudos. just one thing, wouldn't crocheting too close to the roots end up ripping the hair at the roots? that could be bad because thats irreversable damagein time you could cause the roots of your dreads to be so weak one day you may just rip a lock off by the roots
I have been looking for a video like this for so long! Thanks so much, I actually understand what people were talking about with the whole crochet thing now - I have 2 dreads now and they're already gorgeous thanks to you! Keep on keepin on, love!
Oh man- How i wish i found your video before this morning!! i just dreaded my husband's hair- and i'm not thrilled with the outcome thus far. very fuzzy and i did use wax. BUT i am going to spend however long it takes to crochet them into the tightness that *I* prefer like yours! My husband doesn't care- he loves them as they are, but i would rather him look well dreaded rather than someone who hasn't groomed himself for years! LOL!! thank you for your tutorial!
Part 1 and Part 2 tutorial is amazing. It's exactly what I've been scouring the internet for. I've done dreads before, but didn't do as much research. After over a year I took them out. And now I'm ready to make the commitment and do it correctly. This is the perfect tutorial, exactly what I was looking for. Thank you. Your dreads are so beautiful and amazing!
I absolutely LOVE the look of your hair. It doesn't look like it stinks (meaning it looks nice and maintained). My hair is only about 4 inches longer than shoulder length right now so I'm in the research phase while I wait for it to grow more. I'm 34 and have wanted mine dreaded for at least 15 years. I'm finally at a point in my life that I'm living for me and doing as I damn well please. I'll hopefully start on mine in about 4-6 months. I've thought about it for so long, it's past time to just do it!
I already commented on part 1 but I feel much more confident after watching your video, before I wouldn't trust myself doing it myself but the steps you do totally seem like something I could do.
Loved the video and your relaxed attitude. Definitely more of this needed in the world. My hair is about two inches long now after deciding to grow it after lots of clipper cuts and bleach blasting! I have a long journey before undertaking this method but it's one of the best methods I've seen. (No chemicals needed)
Absolutely beautiful! I wish there was as much info on dreads back in the early 2000 when I got mine. I might still have them, but nonetheless, I hope to one day have beautiful dreads like yours.
Thank you!!!!! this is the exact method im going to use on my own hair, your dreads look greaat and i love that you dont need any products just dedication to the dreads!
You there, lady? You are beyond awesome. :) First, I've always wanted dreads but haven't been brave enough - I have very thick, somewhat curly hair, and I'm not entirely sure I have the dedication to proper maintenance (as it is I wash, towel dry, ponytail, nothing more). Your's are absolutely gorgeous though! Secondly, you're an incredibly talented recording artist. (Oh, and I LOVE your wall hanging!)
you have amazing talent, I love your music and your artwork, also, beautiful dreads. I've been trying to work up the courage to do a few myself for a few years. ♥
I wish I had the balls to do this to my hair. Dreads look awesome on you! If I ever get the courage to do it, I'll be following your videos. Ps- Love your music!
she takes all the fun and spontaneity out of dread locking, locking is supposed to be natural, and messy, and fun. It is fun just watching your hair do what it naturally wants to do. My advice is to not use a crochet needle until your dreads are at least 3 months along, and then only sparingly. Like maybe once. Enjoy your locking journey. It is supposed to be a joyful experience.
I was just watching the video and then realised I was really getting into the music...I wondered who it was. Derp! I remembered you said the music was your own, so I would just like to say that you are very talented!
Alright, so , I've been thinking of locking my hair for forever.. and I hafta wait for my hair to grow out, as I've been shaving the sides of my head since I was in the 7th grade! Haha, but I just hafta say that I like the crochet method, and the way you've explained it, it makes it sound easy.. but I know, I've got a LONG road ahead of me, til I'll have dreads as beautiful as yours! Thank you!
OMG!! i was going to pay a thousand dollars to redo my dreads for the third time. the first two time i did it i had a rookie do it and my hari got all destroyed and the second i had a panick attick. thank you for this, this was the most effective way of doing them. thank you. i just want to keep my bangs
I'm like you.. I've seen every single dread video on youtube.. and let me tell you... This series of two videos is the best. (: Great teacher. I want my dreads like yours.. when I make them I'll make a video so you can see them. (: Thanks for the tutorial. ♥
I have dreads at the moment and I got a full head in just over 5 hours! However the person who did it was a wax nut! I have nothing against wax but some people just need to stop! I think the next time I get dreads I will defs do it this way! You're dreads are awesome!
Beautiful job . mine are 4 years old using this exact style . solid tight clean dreads . Some advice for people starting out Maintain !!!!! pop your locks , WASH YOUR HAIR , Dont put crap in it like honey .
Hi & Hello Melissa, your music is amazing & you make very entertaining videos.. The lyrics described you as a Pisces & we Pisces are very creative daydreamers ; ) I enjoy your dread videos; you make it look easy. Dreads aren't for everyone but they look really beautiful on you. I'm much older than you, probably your mom's age & have three daughters.. I can't believe I'm saying this but if their hair looked like your hair, I'd encourage dreads on each of them.. Blessings, Elizabeth
This is amazing! I've been looking for a way to maintain my dreads beacause they've started to look fuzzy from all the loose hair. I'm ordering my crochet hooks right now.
Thank you for taking the time to make this awesome video. I am dreadding my hair right now and trying to figure out how to deal with the ends and just make the whole dread better. I am having my family dread my hair right now and then I will go back through and maintain them with the hook and tighten them up. Im glad I got my family so Hopefully they will help me keep my sections for the first few months
Hi, me & my boyfriend are really interested in getting dreads.. But we need more lessons i guess. We need more informationy on how to do it. Out of all the dread videos i have watched, this one is by far the best. Your dreads look great. Thats exactly how i want mine to look. I wish i lived near you so i could pay you to do them for me because youre so good at it. lol
you have super awesome dreads! im gonna make mine in like 2 weeks and im so excited because ive waited so long :P I really like the way yours came out to be, im most likely going to try doing the same as you did :D
Nice video and nice locks you have, I have locks too but I just twisted my Caucasian hair into two strands and used a lil wax on everyone of them, I didn't back comb or separate and rip. I just kept twisting them into locks every chance I got, they look great and its only been since last Feb. 2012. I had locks 5 yrs. ago but cut them off and started again cause I was lost without them, LOL
Im reading ur lock story on the internet. Really Nice the way u Wright that story. And combine IT with these video's. Im learning a lot. Have my partails for almost 2 weeks now. And maybe in going to do al, but i take my time to think about it. ts my own journey. Glad to find ur video's. And u have beautyfull dreads girl. Good Luck with all the things u doing 😘
Yes more vids please. I'm sorry if I missed if you told us what size sections you made but they look like 2"? Great vids and perfect timing because I'm going to do mine this weekend and it's good to see you omit the twist and rip.
I've never used that specific shampoo, but I do use a residue free shampoo. I loved Dr Bronner's peppermint shampoo--it is natural, residue free, smells amazing, is very soothing to itchy scalp, and lasts a long time.
Sick sick sick dreadies.By far the best method demo I have seen to get a tight start.Your fingers must hurt after crocheting? If you crochet that much you must never be able to comb them out?
Love ur vid. Def put me more at ease & feel so much more informed on hw to do this, shld I do it. Ur locks are beautiful, by the way. Thnks for the vid, it was an absolute great one. :D Hope u mk more, if anymore are needed. Thnk u soo veryy much... ;)
the best tutorial ive seen, it's the crocheting technique i was looking for. Have you any tips on putting dreds that have been cut off back into hair, my guy whines that im snapping the hair when i do it. Peace
It is possible, but using the crochet hook makes a huge, immediate difference. You can see at 2:29 in this vid how the dread looks before its crocheted. It is thick and spiky and much looser. After it is crocheted, it is tight, loose hair pulled in, and will hold up to washing much better, thus lock faster.
This was extremely helpful. Thank you so much for posting. Also, I LOVED the music and thought you said it was yours. I would love to get my hands on some. Is that possible, or is it just for your own private use?
This was a very good video and your dreads look awesome but if there is a way you could make a video just on crocheting, because most of the video your hand is hiding what you're doing. Thanks great video
Hi! So this is by far the absolute best dread making video I've watched, and I've watched dozens.. I was just wondering, how necessary is the crochet hooking step? Is it possible to acheive dreads with the back combing and palm rolling alone? Because I'm truly awful at crocheting, the amount of times I've started a dread, started to crochet and then just combed the whole lot back out is ridiculous.. I don't mind if it takes longer for the dreads to mature, I was just wondering if it's possible..
Your video's are great and really helpful and your dreads look great. Could you go into root maintainance and show how you keep them looking so nice and what you wash them with. Also the ones that you didn't backcomb as tight (that are longer) did they lock-up ok or do you recomend doing them all as tight as possible?
I love both of your videos! I was just wondering how you did it a little at a time, did it look weird? and how did you manage having some dreads and some "normal" hair at the same time?? Thanks again!
No, a needle and thread won't do anything. the time you spend going to the craft store (or ordering online), then practicing &perfecting the crochet method will save you MONTHS of locking time. MONTHS of not looking nappy. Its really super ridiculously worth it.
I'm working on another video covering maintainance. I would recommend making them as tight as you can without considering the length. If you try to make them longer, ie looser, they'll unravel more and will take waaaaaay longer to lock. Tight is best.
I don't know how much it would cost, but I'm guessing it'd be a lot. It would take at least an entire day, if not more. You'd def be in that chair for over 8 hours.
I've seen that you can unlock dreads by soaking them and combing them out. Is it any more difficult to unlock the hair when it's been crocheted as opposed to just palm rolled/waxed? Thank you for this marvelous information, your dreads look just perfect!! Can't wait to try it out.. :)
If you want your dreads to "look good" don't rip and twist. Crochet. Crocheting is the only way to have nice, tight, locked hair from the get-go. Any other method I've seen takes months to look "nice". Or you can use some kind of wax/product to slick all the loose hair down. (I never have, though.)
A friend parted my hair, it would have been too hard to do it myself. We did it in one inch sections (some a bit smaller) in a brick pattern. I have 58 dreads.
Okay this is great....just wondering, cos you didn't do the crochet hook til you got to the front of your hair in the video. Do you do that to each dread? or just the front of your hair/bangs line?
Do you kind of aim with the crochet hook? Or is it just like a in and out process not even minding where it goes? I have such a hard time understanding crocheting the dread.
Hey! Well, first I have to say that I love your dreads, and mine were made exactly like yours, but I want to ask you what is the time interval between the maitenence you do on your dreads. Waiting for your answer :)
Ack!!! Love this method... How hair type is similar... But for the life of me I can't get this crochet thing down, all I do is turn my nice tight back comb dread into a loose root fluff ball. What am I doing wrong?
When I had dreads my tips wouldn't round like hers and other peoples do, they kinda just curled at the ends like my hair does undreaded, but just don't roll them in your palm and try to make them round, but they still could end up round, it just depends on you're hair.
Ok THANK GOD i found this video, the rip and tear is NOT working out for me. But i have a question. I dont have a crochet needle nor the time to go out and get one, so does needle and thread work just as well?

This has to be the most helpful video I have ever watched.. Thank you so much for posting this vid.. Time to start growing out my hair!!!!
So many years later and this video still holds up, thank you for posting!
Just so you know I've probably watched about 20 dread making videos and so far, yours is the best. Thank you :)
I have been looking for a video like this for so long! Thanks so much, I actually understand what people were talking about with the whole crochet thing now - I have 2 dreads now and they're already gorgeous thanks to you! Keep on keepin on, love!
I love your dreads! This video has given me every bit of information I needed and was looking for in dread making.
Your tutorial is excellent. I'm glad I watched this before starting. Definitely gonna take my time when I get started.
Love YOU! Love your dreads! I was scared to get dreads until I watched your video. THANKS!!!! Can't wait!
I just started my dreads...I have long hair, your video has been the most helpful thank you.
Oh man- How i wish i found your video before this morning!! i just dreaded my husband's hair- and i'm not thrilled with the outcome thus far. very fuzzy and i did use wax. Has to be one of the best dread videos I've seen. your dreads are amazing 😍
the dreadheadhq lock sculpta is VERY user friendly. And it's much much nicer to your hair than a regular crochet hook.
I have dreads at the moment and I got a full head in just over 5 hours! However the person who did it was a wax nut! I have nothing against wax but some people just need to stop! I think the next time I get dreads I will defs do it this way! You're dreads are awesome!

hi, awesome dreadlocks!! so i was wondering whether your technique causes your dreads to thicken on thin over time as they mature? Thank you!! :)
wow great job i love your dreads!!!!
did you used any specific shampoo????

yu really got it goin' on girl...I'm Subscribed =)
beautiful girl with beautiful dreads
rasta^.^
@rootzrebelz808 it makes all the hairs the stick out stick in a little more and it makes them tighter
Do you think this would work on thin hair.. I have semi curly but thin hair.. but I think your dreads are beautiful
I don't know how much it would cost, but I'm guessing it'd be a lot. It would take at least an entire day, if not more. You'd def be in that chair for over 8 hours.
sick dreads.. do u have dandruff problems.. do u have a way to not get dandruff?
I've seen that you can unlock dreads by soaking them and combing them out. Is it any more difficult to unlock the hair when it's been crocheted as opposed to just palm rolled/waxed? Thank you for this marvelous information, your dreads look just perfect!! Can't wait to try it out.. :)
u look beautiful !
Is that your song in the background? It is lovely. And your tutorial (both parts) have helped me, so thanks!
A friend parted my hair, it would have been too hard to do it myself. We did it in one inch sections (some a bit smaller) in a brick pattern. I have 58 dreads.
i loooove your dreads. how many do you have?hope you reply
Thank you for your video
how long did it take you to know that you were sure that you wanted dreads???
great vids... beautiful dreads... what do you use to wash your dreads? do you think dread head HQ's residue free dread soap would be a good choice?
