    When Bruce does it it’s with “intent” as in he’s going to use it. When other people do it it’s just a show, like a party trick.

    Another possibility here is that the slower shot camera was running slightly fast which slows it down during playback at 24 frames per second. The faster shot was perhaps running at exactly 24 FPS which appears accurate and faster. They always talk about (since the Green Hornet days) over cranking the cameras to better capture his movements. Hard to know really.

    Been a huge Bruce fan since 73, I taught Nunchacku years back, but these two clips for me were both speeded up, just camera 2 will have been set at a different speed as it won’t have been done in the past editing room, but in camera. The cameras will have been under run which when played back at 24 FPS will give a faster image.

      I don't think he was a showman.
      I think he was a Master of the Martial Art, and his whole message was that if you can master the orient's eastern thinking of the Martial Art, you can master the psychology of not just your opponents but the psychology of your friends and the public where you know what get's a effect and psychologically stimulates people via actual truth and reality, and you'll also know what parts of truth and reality DON'T get an effect or even have general value. So he wasn't a showman, that indicates he's a "con man", no no he was just a genius of the human condition via Martial Arts. He understood deeply the human condition so much that he knew it PHYSCIALLY, meaning the art of the body's anatomy and it's expression and he knew the human condition mentally, meaning our fears, our hopes, instincts, habits, desires and strengths. And both these deep perception of the Physical + the Mental for being human he had directly, according to him, from Martial Arts. So, sure I guess we can say he was a "showman" but only as a direct result of being a Martial Art master.
      "As a writer, as a poet, as a penciller artists, as an actor....alllllllll these I have learned...FROM Martial Arts". - Bruce Lee

    Most explosive kick and hand speed ever of Bruce not faked or cranked. To name a few.
    1."Way Of The Dragon" The kick to Bob Walls hand, then the fake low then to the head. (Mind boggling)
    2.The "Big Boss" Ice factory scene: back/hook kick following that zoom in on Bruce's face, just after he stabs that guy on the ground with the knife. (Unreal!!)
    3. "Fist Of Fury"...The fight with Bob Baker, the part of the scene where Bruce shows that insane closing speed kick to the knee, while returning to the starting position without any telegraphing movement. (Unbelievable athleticism! and power!)
    4. "Fist Of Fury" part of the scene where Bruce circles around Baker to his right while delivering the side/front kick to his head. He starts of the movement with the hand feint, then the kick to head follows. It's totally seamless and very realistic. This follows the kick to the knee I'm referring to in the same scene. Could be the best fight scene on film (My Favorite). (Mind - blowing kick speed, puts Super Foot Wallce to shame, and he's great.)

    Was aware of the two camera angle shot of the same scene it was pretty much understandable .. good observation on the speed up bit.. I think it was a conscious decision during editing to show the speed progression from level A to B. Quite likely they didn’t have the time to reshoot this sequence again and to be honest it never looked bad on screen compared to silly speed up action scenes on other Kung Fu movies made in Hong Kong or Hollywood /rest of the world. The editing of ETD was pretty good and kudos to Warner Brothers for presenting us a timeless classic that has stood the test of time and will continue to do so till the end of time. Of course without Lee, the movie would have been pointless. Rewatched ETD last night on Blu-ray and it’s incredible. ❤

    Let me educate you about filmmaking. The Chucks were made out of polyester and very very delicate and they kept falling apart so they had to film it slow. That’s why his eyes kept blinking and it is sped up. Jim Kelly took a pair home and they fell apart in a couple of days .

    Bruce Lee LIVES!!!!!!!!!

  • @paulpolpiboon9535
    @paulpolpiboon9535 Před 3 měsíci +1

    It's so odd for someone to notice something like that lol.
    But in all honesty, that's why rehearsals are sharply practiced. When you compare the two different angles, you Stripey had observed that every little facial expression or slight facial tick, and then every movement of the nunchuck maneuver and handling are both the "same". But Stripey THAT can easily be from SHARP repetitive rehearsal. If you practice a thing over and over and over and over again and again, and you have the dedication to detail that Lee has for a scene and moreover the vision that he wants to get across deeply on his human expression from every snarl to every lip curl...multiple angles of different takes WILL look identical.
    At the least: it's not impossible.
    For example, in Way of the Dragon after Bruce gets up from being defeated in the colosseum and he does that whole slo mo dance, feeling + gauging Chuck out, at the very end of the slo mo dance you see him do that iconic little Bruce Lee move. He does like a shake or twist.
    Now to you and me that seems so original and unique that it can't be repeated...but if he's exacting and meticulous as we know him to be you might not be able to tell the difference between 5-10 takes of that little move, the shake/twist thing. I'm just sayin that needs to be taken into account, is all I'm sayin.
    Now let's say I'm right, he can just duplicate the whole scene to a "T", then that would mean he had more energy in the other take where he was much faster, probably because it was the earlier take, where you're fresh and full in the tank. And that the slower take was actually afterwards where he's lost some energy.
    So that's the reality that should be considered as well, but Stripey YOU could also be right here and someone indeed saw it was better to speed up the other footage, but the OTHER side of the coin here my friend is that the first angle was actually SLOWED down, because the frenzy of speed is too fast for viewers to appreciate and grasp what was happening (as you said Nunchucks was completely new to the world, people would already be mesmerized by the new thing let alone too high of a speed).
    So one OTHER possibility we should consider is that both angles had the super high speed that is Lee's own human power, but to open up the introduction of this foreign weird nunchuck item, perhaps it needed to be slowed down enough in the initial seconds for viewers to grasp the scene.
    And as we all know, slowing down Lee's footage is not a new thing for The Dragon. His footage frequently had to be slowed down for the camera frames to show it. Anyways, that's my rant here, sorry to talk your ear off, but all in all another great video Stripey. Hope you enjoyed that Bruce Lee convention you went to.

Meaning it was filming at a lower speed maybe 18fps. I think Bruce would have known this when he watched it in post. It in no way takes anything away from the great man himself, but simply highlights the tweakery involved in many of our best loved films. An important thing to note though, is Bruce died at 32, just imagine how much more gifted he would have become wielding nunchaku, if he'd have had the opportunity to live till old age? Imagine that? At that time, people were not doing the tricks that you see now, what Bruce is doing and how he's handling the chucks was actually pretty standard, but was good technique, and some of it is actually more innovative than people realize, like his use of flipping and switching into the reverse hold and the shoulders and hips to bounce the chucks off. I know he also practiced striking and hitting things with the chucks, using them as an actual weapon, and it shows in his handling of them when he strikes. Many people today practice the hand rolls and flipping, but lack the coordination and feel to actually strike and retrieve again correctly.

Also during final battle when Roper backfists a guy. Same sequence used a few moments later, closeup & from slightly different angle. Never knew about the speeding up though. Nice find. Excellent video again Stripey. A couple of points to add for you. They only had two cameras for filming Enter the Dragon. Gil Hubbs mentioned this in some interviews. While editing, many shots were repeated from the 2nd angle to pad out the action. Examples of this are the opening moves in the fight between Williams and Parsons. Bruce doing a same spin kick on O'hara and Ropers backfist in the big battle. One possible answer for the different speeds is the 2nd camera was cranked lower than 24 frames per second. Also Bruce Thomas noted that the nunchuks twirling in Fist of Fury was sped up slightly because Bruce appears to be blinking quickly. Whatever the answer, Bruce was simply brilliant.👍

    Cameras on the day could have been recording at different speeds say standard 24 FPS and possibly 20 FPS. Doing it in post, pre digital age would have ment dropping frames and it wouldn't look smooth. It may have been played around on later releases digitally. But always felt it looked slightly speed up even though I'm a huge fan of Lee.
    Either way it's still a remarkable action sequence.

    Ive always had suspicion or two that some of Bruces scenes may have involved some sped up footage. Again this is film making afterall so it wouldnt bother me. One that comes to mind is in Big Boss at the Ice factory when Bruce first starts fighting. He tells everyone to stop then challenges them thugs to fight him, at which point one walks in with a knife. Within a split second Bruce has kicked the knife out his hand then nailed him with another kick so fast and smooth that it looks almost inhuman to me 😂

    Hello Stripey ! Now as a fellow Bruce Lee lover I admire the respect show his legacy unlike some geezers around with beards but just a thought for you there is a flip side to that coin ,did you stop to think that maby one of the cameras were allowed down and the other one was normal speed which would agree with what Brandon said in the 1992 interview in Australia that his Dad was so fast they had to slow the cameras down or otherwise it would be a blur I know if beardy said the word s we call out BS. but without being a total fan boy and considering they were Brandon's words I realisticly believe it's 50/50 it could be 1camera was slowed down or speeded up but 1 thing I'm sure we can both agree on is nobody is as fast and just simply natural looking with them than Bruce it's almost as he was born with them attached to him 💯👍 ps class act love your channel mate

    interesting, well spot on Stripey.
    I always thought that there was only one camera, as seen in the archives and making of ETD due to the low budget.
    it might also be the technical speed of the angle side camera...or just an artistic editing choice.
    OR maybe the face camera was slowed down 😬.
    But the truth is that Bruce can do exactly the same two Nunchuk routines in one, with different speed...because he's simply the best ! 😌

    I have read through all the comment's here, and again no one has mentioned this. The very first DVD's released, had a little box in the left hand bottom corner on the back. In the box was the Image of a Movie camera on a stand. Over the top of this, Is a Number. These are the camera angles that you could change to In real time, as You watched the movie. Or You could watch the entire Movie with one angel only. This got scrapped after a year or so. So not many know about It now. It was why Phillips/Sony got the money to develop and master DVD's In the first place. As It was the Porn Industry that loved this new Image changing In real time. So put all the money Into It. Nice reveal Stripey. I knew about the two Cameras thing Years ago. They even showed the entire Movie from one Camera angle In the cinemas, and no one noticed Genius. Keep Looking, They are out there.

    Stripey,
    We'd like your opinion on the the Bob Wall fight in the WOTD in the new territories scene.
    The scene where Bruce does a fient front kick to Bob's hand and then hook kicks him to the head.
    Do you think it's slightly speeded?
    As for the Enter scene, i picked those chucks up at the Norman Borine World Of Bruce Lee Museum visit in Birmingham in 92 or 93.
    I couldn't believe how light they was.
    A few ounces.
    Now, considering the arm power Lee had, moving them at full speed like he was known for, would have made them look super fast due the power when he was moving them.
    As regards the Suzuki nunchaku fight, part of it definitely looks jumpy.
    As regards Bruce's speed, one has to only look at the Charlie Chan screen test and that was filmed at normal speed and his flowing movement speed is totally out of this planet.
    Also, look at the way of the intercepting fist episode from Longstreet.
    That double kick he demonstrates to Fransiscus looks like his legs were made of rubber.
    Mind boggling.
    It's a question worth putting to Andy Staton at this years event in Leeds.
    He knows everything, or nearly everything on Bruce.
    Very knowledgeable man.

    Y’know Stripey, slightly sped up a couple seconds or so, it doesn’t matter to me because this is the real Bruce Lee, doing what he choreographed. Robert Clouse most likely sped it a bit. It takes nothing away from what for me is my favorite fight scene of all time. The way the nunchaku is used in the context of the entire scene is brilliant, even what Bruce does with them once his is trapped after the fight. Yes there are a lot of fast flashy routines martial artists perform in demonstrations and on screen with the nunchaku. Bruce in Dragon, Fist of Fury, Way of the Dragon, the existing Game of Death footage, made it an art with style and intensity, even a touch of humor I don’t think anyone has come close to since

    Good spot Stripey! The second half is clearly cranked up. The next question is: did / would Bruce approve? My thoughts are he wouldn’t: in the only movie in which Bruce had complete control, nothing’s speeded up. True, the darts are a bit hokey, but I think that Bruce used these as a necessary mechanism to get rid of the guns…

  • @GINKBB
    @GINKBB Před měsícem

    Unless I missed it, would you please let us know, where the second camera footage came from? I have never seen nor heard about until now. Thank you. Also, we should all agree on our terminology. When something appears "sped-up" on screen, it is "Under-cranked" shooting say 20-22 FPS (normal speed is 24 FPS) when action appears in slow motion it is "over-cranked" an increase in FPS typically 48 FPS or faster. Manipulated "speed" onscreen, is never actually "sped-up." The camera is really, "slowed down" during the actual filming. Therefore it is filmed with the pre-mediated intent of the particular sequence appearing FAST. Multiple uses of "Under-cranking" are present in every single Lee film. All of them.

  • @BRUCEJJ66
    @BRUCEJJ66 Před 3 měsíci

    Interesting. Question, though: how would they have "sped it up"? Many of us know about the practice of "undercranking" the camera in Hong Kong action movies, filming at 21 or 22 frames per second rather than the standard 24 frames per second so that when the film is played back at 24 frames per second the action looks a bit faster ... but if they did that in this case & we're able to compare the same action from the two angles would we be able to see, upon frame by frame examination, where a few frames were missing from the "sped up" bit? I'm not saying Bruce was above undercranking/wouldn't resort to "speeding up" (I kind of think he did it in The Game Of Death nunchaku sequence, at least), I'm just wondering by what method (wouldn't it have to be either through undercranking or removing frames in the editing process?) it would have been done here. Anyway, interesting observation, Stripey ... up until now I thought I had examined every frame of Enter The Dragon closely! :)

    Is it possible that the speed has something to do with like NTSC and that is where some scenes look speeded up? ie transfered to PAL etc.
    We have all heard that Bruce was filmed he was to fast for the camera to pick him up so they slowed it down so maybe they speeded it up afterwards?

    Good work stripey. I knew it was two takes of the same routine but thought the second angle looked faster because it was facing Bruce.
    Watch the Suzuki fight in FOF, a part of that looks sped up to me. When Bruce and his opponent are facing each other, they then attack each other with Bruce spinning the chucks in circles before tucking it under his arm. Suzuki seems very quick and slightly jerky in his movements.

    Hi Stripey
    It’s possible the first part runs slightly slow I suppose
    However the camera does cut to a different angle halfway through
    Could it be two different takes of the same routine spliced together.They probably did several takes of the routine before Bruce was happy.Happiest with the first part we see and happiest with the second part but another take of the same routine which Bruce did slightly faster
    .Or even in the editing they cut out a few frames so that the timing is slightly ahead? Don’t think our brains would register 3 frames or so being removed in one set of 24 frames
    I don’t know..still brilliant though 🙂

  • @UKRetroReels
    @UKRetroReels Před 3 měsíci

    So I have a theory, and as a filmmaker may be able to shed some light on this. As someone has rightly mentioned, when working on Western productions Bruce was subjected to having sequences shot at a higher frame rate so they could slow it down. The way this two shot setup is filmed, you have the MASTER SHOT (MS) which is the wide shot off to the side, and the MEDIUM CLOSE UP (MCU) direct to camera. My instinct as a director is that the MCU would have literally just been for the nunchaku swing. There is an MCU insert of him deflecting and taking the nunchaku with the kali sticks, but this is a different shot as it's also angled to the side.
    Now the theory comes in with the Master Shot. This is exactly the same shot that carries over from the last two guards he takes out with the kali sticks -- including the INSANELY fast kali attack with multiple blows. Now somewhere in this shot, there may have been a moment that got lost to Bruce's speed resulting in them cranking frame rate to on the camera to 36fps to slow the MS down to 24fps in post production if they needed to. I've tested this on Final Cut Pro and although it's not COMPLETELY accurate due to fps settings, the MS is between 8%-10% slower than the MCU.
    I then sped up the MS by 10% and what you've got is an almost IDENTICAL level of speed to Bruce's nunchaku work on GAME OF DEATH.
    I don't think the ENTIRE MS is slowed down, but it feels like the nunchaku swing definitely is, rather than the MCU being sped up.

    • @UKRetroReels
      @UKRetroReels Před 3 měsíci

      Just to add, if they did JUST slow down the Master Shot of the nunchaku swing, my only thinking as to the reasoning for this is that they wanted the moment to last longer. And considering the sequence was relatively short, the only way they could make it look like one long sequence was to slow down the master and seamlessly hide it in the edits back and forth to the MCU. It would have been a lot more noticeable to slow down the MCU as it's directly to camera. It's also the MCU that REALLY demonstrates Bruce's speed in this scene.
