saw them in PA a few days ago and my god was it epicc...the lights were amazing synced with their music...hunger of the pine was their opening song and the lights for that were just amazing

+HyPeR Gal they're not "mediocre performers" if you watch their other live performances you would know that they're amazing. This isn't an easy song to perform live.

The variations in vocals (pitch and frequency) in the recorded version are quite big and difficult or maybe impossible to perform live.
But they surely are hypnotizing!

The syncopation of the rhythm makes the drummer sound off, but he is actually on time and in tempo with two exceptions which are the drum fills... SO he isn't the one making it sound bad. The song is just a very slow one so naturally a band will tend to fall behind live. That's part of the reason why they chose that beeping noise to be in the song... It's like a metronome.

the drummers not actually off rhythm I don't think? He's doing a syncopated beat, it's meant to be on the offbeats. It's sounds odd but is right. I like it anyway, kinda adds to the feel of the live version for me at least :)

I'm guessing the part that's throwing you off is the transition from the hi-hat to the cowbell. Ignore the bell and count with the snare/bass. You'll see that he's on the beat.
He's intentionally making the cowbell sound off beat; that's what syncopation is. He's clearly very good at it.
Thom Green is a gifted drummer. Quirky rhythms (such as this) are his niche.

The complaints about the offbeat drumming on this video are weird. Go listen to the studio version of the song with good headphones; you'll hear that same syncopated cowbell there as well.

Im optimistic, i prefer to think that this incredibly talented guys will work better themselves as live performers, and not just throw shit to them, their music is outstandingly original. they just need to look inside their music and put it out correctly. (all the vocals need to correct that pitch and the entry of rithyms has to be clear a secure)

The rhythm is pretty much spot on, but he maybe should've used cowbell for accents instead od cymbals, they sound kinda soft. The bigest problem with alt J's live performances is the fact that their songs are very slow and minimalistic, so there is 'room' for every mistake to be heard. Also, a lot of drummers will say it is much easier to play a mid-range tempo than a slow one, and you can see that here. Also, the vocalist is bad :D. Still, they make really good music, but need to work on their live performances
