I was reading a updated story...A Texan calf roper has been disqualified from the Calgary Stampede for "aggressively using his rope on his horse."Tuf Cooper was disqualified for the remainder of the rodeo Wednesday on the grounds of "mistreatment of livestock."
This was 5 years ago. He did not hurt the horse, he was trying to get him to work!

People really think horse are so damn sensitive they can never be touched, another horse kicking or biting him is a lot worse than a spanking on the butt, and no he doesn’t hit the horse all the time, every once in while they need reminding and that’s the end of it. The same people crying would get pushed around by a disrespectful horse and eventually kicked in the head or stomped into the ground trying to give it a hug and a kiss. These horse are treated like royalty 99% of the time.

I come from a rodeo family and all Tuf was doing was giving his horse a little over an under and what are they going to do next disqualified the barrel racers for using a over and under ?

the difference is he's training his horse ... barrel racers aren't training their horses they are adding speed.

This is too far! He was using it just like they do in barrel racing! Ok, so does that mean that barrel racing is out too? I understand that people want to stop animal abuse, so do I!! However, he wasn't using the rope as punishment, he was using it to get his horse to speed up and make up for falling behind the steer! If these "rules" keep popping up, there will be no stampede and that is terrible!

Tawni Blanthorn the judges disqualified him after this saying it was abuse and neglect. He didn't compete the rest of this event.
Yeah he was disqualified. I'm not sure that he should of been. It was a little more than normal, but either way he was disqualified.

Sorry to break it to you pal. All Calf ropers do this at small rodeos and in practice. It is to get the horse going. They don’t do it all the time to be abusive. Just when their going slow.

Horse wasn't doing what he or she should been doing. It's Calgary not your some small town rodeo where there's $1,500 bucks to be won. Horses need a spanking every once in awhile. He didn't hurt the horse and keep in mind a horse weighs from 1000 pounds and up you can't baby them like a child if you do that's where you get into having issues and land up in the canner!!

@Chad Gochis steer roping is a PRCA event you can literally get on the PRCA website and see who is making the steer roping finals. When the PRCA was first started there were only 2 events which were steer roping and bronc riding, the other events came several years later. The only reason steer roping isn't held at the NFR is because the arena is way to small, and there are a bunch of dumb liberals that are more worried about a roping steer instead of an actual endangered animal. Steer roping is held at hundreds of rodeos all over the U.S. and not just PRCA rodeos, within 2 hrs of where I live there are at least 20 rodeos with steer roping and that many if not more jackpots and stand alone ropings.
If they think you roped them too hard they WILL disqualify you

+Linda Craig Stock contractors come to the arena before the rodeos and those calves are run down the arena several times while people on horseback make a line down the middle of the arena so the calf learns where to go. Not to mention at the pro level they get the best roping calves available who have all been roped hundreds of times. They're trained to do that. No "painful stimuli" needed. Plus if they used painful stimuli, you would never see any calves getting turned out without being roped because they refuse to leave the chute.

I grew up around horses, I have capacity to understand some value in maintaining heritage and I have family and friends connected to the stampede but I'm done the trying to see both sides of the fence, it's still so shameful to feel I have to associate with this aspect of humanity. And yes there's so much other violence in the world, yada yada...I've heard it all. It's still herd mentality ego fuelling disgust.
Did it ever occur to "you" that there are people like me with a fortunate/unfortunate high level of empathy and see animals as incredibly sentient beings in their own right? But we're criticized and deemed crazy for having the balls to stand up and say something we feel so strongly about?
