Genealogy is the study of family origins and lineage. Due to the history and effects of colonialism, many folks from previously colonized countries have a hard time tracing ancestry.
Haitian genealogist, Jerry speaks to me today about the work he does in helping Haitians across the diaspora to trace their family roots via the Haitian Genealogy Facebook group.
In this video, we talk about the steps to take in order to trace family origins, the difference between genealogy and ancestry DNA tests and more.

    Nice!
I'm an amateur. Started with my own family. The San Juan Bautista church in Trujillo Honduras has a list births and baptisms going back to 1806. For other families it's goes back further. The church has placed it's records online. There is a Haitian element in my life. In 1833 a great great grandfather married a Haitian women with a last name Peri. I haven't traced the Haitian side yet. This was good. From your Garifuna friend.

I've been interested in finding as much as possible about my family. I started doing ancestry in 2016 and have been addicted. I love finding out new information in the search and the finding is very satisfying. When I share some of the information with my family members, it is the biggest joy to see them remember people from the past.

Good video. I'm new to genealogy search and as far as I know I don't have any Haitian ancestry but when I took a ancestry DNA test recently, dozens of 5th cousins on my paternal and maternal side came up as matches. Some of these families are still currently in Haiti. I was excited but am trying to figure how. Is it possible that I might of have some Haitian ancestry and not know it?

Wow, that is quite an interesting discovery. Definitely something to look into some more so you know for sure but given that u said some of the families are still currently in Haiti, it’s likely 😊

@@FreedomBiafra that's what I figured. With Louisiana it could either be that you had Haitian family that came to the area or you are connected to Natchez Indians that were sent to Haiti during the Natchez wars. Many Haitians are descendants of these Natchez . Some of them came back to LA but most of them stayed in Haiit. My family is from Haiti and Louisiana .

That would be for a much later video. This video is an intro to the concept so those who aren’t aware of the resources available can get started.
Also it couldn’t have been possible for me in this video as we literally just met… plus, I rather not share my family stuff on the internet…
Maybe one day, I’ll share a little… but not now

[3]And they repenting and groaning for anguish of spirit shall say within themselves, This was he, whom we had sometimes in derision, and a proverb of reproach:
[4]We fools accounted his life madness, and his end to be without honour:
[5]How is he numbered among the children of God, and his lot is among the saints!
[6]Therefore have we erred from the way of truth, and the light of righteousness hath not shined unto us, and the sun of righteousness rose not upon us.
[7]We wearied ourselves in the way of wickedness and destruction: yea, we have gone through deserts, where there lay no way: but as for the way of the Lord, we have not known it.
