- james naismith created basketball, but that doesn't neccesarily mean he thrived in it...
i hope you guys enjoy this one, it took LOTS of time

That's always been a favorite bit of hoops trivia for me: "Powerhouse Kansas basketball has had just eight head coaches in its 125-year history. Which is the only one who had a losing record?" Of course, the answer is the dude who invented the game...
Its really common in video games. I know someone who was a high level developer for overwatch and he has been hardstuck in bronze since the first ranked season. The creator of smash bros is also pretty mediocre at the game as well
Dr. Naismith’s coaching philosophy was literally “F it. We ball!”
I love that so much.

@@rayneozier how’d my nuts taste
Naismith in the interview sounds like someone doing an impression of what Naismith would sound like
☠️
He sounds like a Simpsons character
Look up teddy roosevelts voice
Naismith created a game; everyone after him converted it into a sport.
the junior jon bois (and bobby broccoli) comparison here is the highest of compliment. good stuff!!
viewing notes! 🖊👀❤🔥:
1:51 - If Kansas were to go hire a basketball coach tomorrow, and he stayed there for 15 years before leaving, he would bring the average coaching time down for the school.
5:55 - To be fair, Yale didn’t have to play against harvard this year, another college football powerhouse at the time, and Yale’s arch rival. This is because Harvard was unable to host the game, so the teams captains publicly argued about it in letters that were hilariously published by newspapers. The argument basically went harvard saying hey we can’t host the game, can we do it at your place, and Yale saying uhmmmm no so you forfeit, and Harvard forfeiting. That but in really fancy words.
15:50 - Eventually they cut a small hole, not big enough for the ball, but big enough to poke a stick through and hit the ball out. This is a rule that lasted for many years somehow, even after the net was invented and it’s actually unclear if they did it for so long to preserve the peach baskets like I just joked about, or if just literally no one thought of it to cut out the bottoms, but that just doesnt seem possible.
27:30 - The coach of the Ajax team also later said one of his common strategy’s was to get a small lead, then hold the ball the rest of the game, a tactic that wouldn’t be eliminated for over 50 years until the invention of the shot clock. So he could’ve been doing that to piss off Naismith and Kansas as well. This also makes the final score unclear. I assumed it was marked as a 2-0 game because that is the standard with any forfeit, no matter the score. However, knowing this strategy of the Ajax team, it is also possible that when Naismith and the Kansas team got angry and stormed out, the score was sitting at 2-0, and part of Naismith’s anger was because of the “keep away” strategy being performed on him, something that would not be negated untilthe invention of the shot clock wayyy later in 1954.
33:57 - I dont wanna make it sound like he didn’t care at all about sports or basketball, the guy was a lifelong education instructor, he did serve on basketball rules committees and other things of the sort, he just wasn’t obsessed, and he tended to shy away from competitive sports, that’s again from his hall of fame page. Jim had other interests, religion, and teaching, basketball wasn’t even his favorite sport, the guy preferred wrestling and gymnastics if he had to choose, but they were all just kids games for fun.
It’s not fully clear, but Naismiths’s words often made it seem like he was against any non recreational level of sports, though we don’t know just how against he was
I just found you and I love this style of video and hope to watch more in the future! Excellently succinct and enjoyable!
this is like the most tiny correction ever and this video is amazing but the creator of the rubik’s cube is named Erno, not Enro.
Always exciting to see a new Boislike channel in my recommendations. Even more exciting when it’s from a good writer with good production.
Nice work.
this series is PRETTY GOOD.
Another tidbit: I read in a book about Indian high-school basketball that Naismith was invited to the Indiana state championship game in (I think) 1915. The book says he was absolutely astonished at the sellout crowds at Butler Fieldhouse (some 15k), couldn't believe the sport had gotten so huge, and in in such a short time.
I can fuckin taste the Jon Bois influence in this, its absolutely excellent, hope you keep developing stuff like this. Its great
He's way better than Bois. I do not understand why everyone likes that guy so much. Original production, but awful narrator and wildly stupid opinions. I just don't get it.
Was coming down to write the same thing. 😆
@@saulspeaks2557
How is his narration sytle bad and opinions stupid?
Just found your channel, this is some really high level stuff, it’s criminal this doesn’t have more views
Great video! I’m a Jayhawk who comes from a family of college basketball fanatics. Kansas tends to get overshadowed by other blue bloods because of our lack of championships compared to our winning %, but we can always say our worst coach was the inventor of the game lol
To be fair, the best players and coaches are usually not the ones who invent the game. They redefine it.
Hopefully Naismith understood that. If I were him I would at least be comforted knowing that I made a game good enough for other people to outsmart its creator.
@@kaijudirector5336 I’m sure he does even in spirit.
Excellent video! I love that there is more than a little John Bois influence here. What program did/do you use for the graphics? Somehow this made it on to my feed with about 200 views, so hopefully the algorithm knows it is quality. Subbed and liked, now to see if you have more videos.....thanks!
thank you so much for the kindness! i use blender for the 3d editing which is the base of everything in this one. then i export it into premiere pro and just add any other extra stuff like the highlights. glad you enjoyed!!!
Probably Blender, you could use Google Earth if you are a psychopath though.
This felt like a legit secret base video, good job on the editing and storytelling
I want to say that this video has a lot of potential to go viral. The title is amazing and intriguing, the editing is great (especially for a smaller youtuber), and the thumbnail is also pretty good. I hope I can come back one day and see this video with a million views.
This video was great, reminiscent of and clearly inspired by Jon avoid’ SB Nation’s videos. Thank you for giving me a ton of info about the game and the inventor of the game that I never knew!
Gives me a huge Bobby Broccoli / Jon Bois feel. Great stuff!
Me too and I absolutely love it. Actually, the thumbnail in this style was enough for me to click onto this video right away. Amazing, that Jon Bois artistic style is growing deep on the CZcams. For some reason it's so comforting to me.
This is actually so funny i am writing my thesis right now in western Mass sports and a lot of it is focused on Naismith. Love the channel!
It should also be noted that western MAss also might have a claim to inventing baseball. In 1791 Pittsfield Massachusetts passed a by law banning the playing of baseball outside the new meeting house they just built. This area is so rich with sports history thanks for shining a light on my home region! i hope to do the same :)
i absolutely love this style of editing !
this was so good man, can't wait for future videos. love finding gems like this.
This was...Pretty Good!
This is what I always wanted! More Jon Bois secret base type videos, this reminds me so much of pretty good! Great video
I've definitely spent time thinking how cruel it is that certain historical figures will never be able to know how massively influential their creations became. Plopping Naismith down in the front row of game 7 of the NBA Finals just to watch the look on his face would be impossibly priceless to me.
Another banger to bless the feed 🙏🏻
keep up the great work brother, longer informative videos on sports are one of my favorite things to watch and honestly you are doing great man your future will be full of success
this video was fuckin fire bro keep it up
Can you imagine if the janitor did have Naismith's initial idea of goals? We'd be playing boxball!
This is the kind of sports content I'm looking for. You took the effort to dive deep, as a guy who thinks he has a pretty good grasp of NFL history I had never seen "the grim reaper smiles on the goalpost" and it's incredible.
And of course diving into the personal aspect and not just the information, very well done, very thorough, hopefully it goes viral!
this is top tier content man, keep it up!
Watching this video from Lawrence right now! Wonderful video - criminally underrated.
In Canada we have these things called “heritage minutes” that air on the tv…. There is one of the story of basketballs creation…. Only a min but worth the watch
I expected the history of basketball to be discussed but not this deep.
Good job for the one who chose this title.
The Jon Bois inspiration is apparent
This is one of the greatest videos I’ve ever seen
In fairness, this isn't TOO shocking. This was the man who had to have multiple games, and SOMEONE else point out that the hoops need holes in the bottom.
Got to visit the Basketball Hall of Fame last year. Really cool place.
1 hall down, only Cooperstown and Canton remain
Duke would be close but really, they were DEFINATLY NOT called "blue bloods" before Coach K. They were an inconsistant team that though they had spurts of greatness here and there, were never a powerhouse in any sport before the mid 1980s
The presentation/production on this video is top notch, Keep up the good work!
How does such a small channel produce such a high quality video good shit
Pretty fun jon bois esque video. Very well put together and there is something i enjoy about this style. Great job!
Criminally underrated channel keep up the great work!
This is some incredible stuff. If i saw this from a 3 million subscriber youtuber i wouldnt bat an eye
that’s so kind, thank you!
Hydn!!! Keep it up! I cannot wait to watch your rise as the algorithm inevitably finds your talent!
You’re a legend! Keep grinding.
This is so high quality I’m surprised you only have 4.6k subscribers
This was a GREAT video!
I got so lost (in a good way) in your video, that by the time we got back to KU, I forgot that the video centered around them. Excellent storytelling!
Edit: wtf you have less than 3k subs?!? Boy you about to pop off!
First video I’ve seen of yours and it sure won’t be the last. Good work
Best basketball video i seen in a long time
You better get a silver play button before I do. You deserve it, and then some. Extremely underrated, your stuff feels Bill Wurtz mixed with Jon Bois and I love it
how do you have so many subs?
@@fccyclingtristan I guess people think I'm funny and they like my voice or hat. Can't think of anything else
@@HenryDaNinth you have no vids with 500 viesw+ but have more than 10k subs?
@@fccyclingtristan I'm a shortstuber at the moment, my phone is over 4 years old and only cost $100. It can only handle so much, being the only means of uploading that I have
This video reminds me so much of early jon bois videos. One of the best sports videos i have seen in a while.
Such a great video and presentation, deserved way more views
This is good content! Surprised to see its at less than 5k views! Keeping doing whqt youre doing and that will soon skyrocket!
what a video, properly done
beautiful video, keep going with this style of editing & visuals it looks amazing
I never even knew he was a coach. This video is so good dude
That was beautiful. 🥹
This was a well done video.
Earned a sub. This was fantastic
I’m so glad this was recommended to me, this is amazing content and brilliant editing. I hope to see you grow more. I’m subbed and will make sure to catch new videos!
This video is so good! You deserve more recognition
Some people may not like the cold but look at what the cold gave us: 2 of the most prestiged sports in history!
This video deserves a million views at least. May you have great success!
Great to see how fast your account is growing 🔥
liked and subscribed. this video is so amazingly informative and entertaining, I am grinning ear to ear right now. I will not be surprised if you hit 100k subscribers this year if you keep this up. honored to be able to say I was here at 3k subs and 460 likes. good shit man.
3:24 ALL CAPS WHEN YOU SPELL THE MAN’S NAME. PAY HEED.
A smart man once said all because yours first don’t make you the best
Reminds me of old Jon Bois. Keep up the good work
Love the Bobby Broccoli visual style and narration!
Finally!!! A sports channel with a decent narrator and good writing. You got my sub
Great video, high quality content. But one error at 6:15 : his name was Erno Rubik, not Enro
awesome video, very high quality. subbed!
Not the first to say this, but it really is a tribute to Jon Bois' filmmaking.
20:53 I went to AA Stagg high school in California
Holy shit, why is this video so good?!
70% of the video and still no creator of basketball sucking at his own game anywhere near, why am i hearing about volleyball?
Such a well-made video! I am shocked that you only have 4k subscribers. Glad that this video got recommended to me, as it was engaging to watch!
Hope you get more sub this is fire 🔥
Not a big deal but fog allen didnt coach Wilt. He did recruit him, as Wilt had to red shirt his freshman year that was fog allens last year. He was forced to retire due to age. So he didnt get to coach Wilt. Just as a side note Wilt is also in the hall of fame for basketball but also Volleyball.
great great video dawg love the jon bois influence and your spin on it. Small suggestion is just to work on smoothing out the audio a bit
i appreciate you man. also agree 100% with the critique, i’m trying to figure it out but i know it doesn’t sound elite. probably gonna try a new mic.
How has this less than 400 views?
great editing/graphics! one thing that i noticed though, you spelled/read "erno rubik" wrong
That connections from Naismith to Michael Jordan is crazy 🤯
HYDN FOR LIFE

Glick street Honolulu Hawaii. These dudes where connected to the YMCA in Hawaii.
great editing
I know a Jon Bois desciple when I see one
It’s not that weird of a concept, Harvey Nasa never flew a space shuttle…
Great video! Keep it up!
Hey by the way Hydn please tell me how you made these SB nation looking like animations and stuff. I wanna know how you make them and what app you've used. I would like to make one soon in the future.
You deserve more subs

Need to replace IU with MSU.

I LOVE this video but i feel like i should just let you know that the inventor of the rubik's cube is named ernő not enro
