- Peter is almost finished his blacksmith shop. All that remains to do is to finish chinking between the logs and the rather daunting task of making the bellows.

I can't get over how much work you and Cathy have done by hand in such a short space of time. You and Cathy have, hands down, produced the best channel on the interweb. Funny, though, when you start using it, you always think it should have been a bit bigger. My lathe doesn’t fit!

I have volunteered at a US National Historic Site for the last 28 years. They have "2 giant bellows in the BS shop there and they work quite sterling. They also heat the shop with a 6 panel stove made in England. The fort was in use from 1829 to 1849. You have a comforting channel in these times we live. Thank you. I appreciate you.

Your right there James. I’ve owned a few over the years and they produce some really good light.
You MUST be 'tickled pink' Peter! You've accomplished soOOOOoo much and it all POPS! Hope you fetch a nice deer for the larder...even though you have a lovely one at home already (Catherine)! If a horse ever comes by to drink from your whiskey barrel...perhaps you may find it drinking more than usual! LOL! My hub was in concrete 4 years and 2 get the hang of it...seems 2 B in the 'staying active' with it. Found the info on lamps and the progress of lighting, quite interesting! Funny how time seems to putter along and then 'BANG' a kind of 'push' seems to catch us up to where we should be (my take). To ponder; "The years wrinkle our skin, but lack of enthusiasm wrinkles our soul." (Socrates). My how 'young' you are! Thank-you 4 sharing...health and God Bless!

I’m sitting by my wood stove that my great grandfather bought new in 1873 a cylinder stove and it’s still all original and nothing is missing works fantastic still.
So many of those old stoves were just discarded. Nice that some people kept them!!

I am as pleased as you are with the work you have done, Maybe even a little more. The satisfaction of a job well done is like nothing else. Good job!
I have seen my great grandmother cutting wicks and making 6 candles at a time. LOL...I have also seen my grandfather "steal" her wicking twine so he could have some fishing line. They had working electrical lights but swore it was easier to light a candle in the middle of the night than it was to get out of bed and turn on a light. It wasn't unusual to walk into their house in the winter and see them sitting around doing what they were doing by candle light. Better believe they had flashlights though. Big heavy metal flashlights! Granddaddy would say a nice heavy light can make short work of a wounded coon or kill a rabbit straight out of the (rabbit) box. Every room had at least one and so did the table on the porch. I don't think I ever saw them use one though.
It is a great feeling of satisfaction. Candle light is such a warm and comforting light. I can understand why your great grandparents were reluctant to give them up (or just didn’t)!

That is one fine structure to be proud of I can’t believe you got it up and done so quick? For the record I worked a 12 hr rotating shift schedule from days one week to nights the next for 27 yrs. Glad it’s done!! Lol

A town near me restored a blacksmiths forge and they had an open day last week.
Went to it and it brought back memories of old times. The bellows made a great sound and a good flow of air. A couple of young apprentice farriers made shoes and shod two horses. One of the restorers said that the most difficult and time consuming was making a new bellows.
Your forge is coming on fine.

A rainy cold November day here in southern Ontario. I was just thinking of how great it would be to spend a few hours out in that shop with the stove going working on a project and a hot coffee.Keep going Peter always enjoy watching.

The shop looks Amazing!! One of the best rustic shops I've seen. One thing I'd like to point out, In the 18th and early to mid 19th century Blacksmiths did not do farrier work. The trades were separate. Blacksmiths started doing farrier work in the later 19th century to supplement their income because the industrial revolution was supplanting their traditional work. They were having a harder time making a living. In the early 20th century, the Blacksmiths that remained (usually in small towns) were not only farriers but also the town auto mechanic.

Hello Peter, love the work you are doing, as a reenactor and blacksmith myself. Here's some info on building a bellows, you want the bottom chamber to open twice as much as the top chamber, and when the bellows is fully opened it shouldn't exceed the width at it's widest point. for the top and bottom boards, you don't want them too heavy or too light, too heavy and it'll be a dog to pump, too light and it won't make enough pressure to feed the fire. just some things to consider. good luck!

Got one in the freezer, Ian and leaving for Manitoulin Island this coming Friday for a weeks hunt up there. I’ve forgotten, are you a hunter?
Appreciate your efforts and dedication! I have yet to make it out for deer season this year. Normally I have gone at least a couple of times during early bow season. Gun season opens this weekend and I probably won't make it out until later in the week if I am lucky. I hope you have success in your hunt. May the ancestors guide and protect you. Looking great there. That stove looks almost just like the one I just put in my shop. It will about run you outta there some days. They heat really well. My workshop in in the old buggy barn outside where they used to keep the old carriage and horse. Door is too low for my truck, so it became the shop. It's a fun place now.

Well Joe, should you ever find your self in this part of the work, we’d love to host you. I am kinda pleased with how the shop is shaping up. I have a modern shop with grinders, cut off wheels, welders etc, but, I plan to immerse my self and figure how they did stuff back in the day.

What can I say ... looking so good ...
I lived in a house that was built in 1750 or so .... the firer place took up 25% of the house , very old farm house .it had a firer place in every room .... but unfortunately the firer place could not be used , to much smoke leak threw the bricks . still had the arm that moved in and out and the " holes " , I do not remember the name ... place were the bread was baked on the side of the fire place . Many stories about the house and many noises ,

I just bought some coke from a blacksmith that has his entire shop in a single car garage. Never seen a better more organize shop.

The shop looks awesome. I had that same stove in my 12x12 hunting camp and if it was in the low teens it would still make you open the door some. I think it might surprise you how much heat it puts out.people forget how much heat the pipe itself puts out.had to stoke it every 2 1/2 or 3 hours or so but they are great little stoves.good luck hunting I’ll be out myself next week. You sure do great work, I would love to have a shop like yours. I have a book by Aldren A. Watson, it's a book on blacksmithing and it has a section in there on building a 5' Bellows. The size could be adjusted if wanted. Just thought I'd mention it.

That stove might surprise you. They have similar ones in drafty uninsulated 16 x 16 primative cabins we stay in at deer camp in Allegheny State Park in NY. Warms them right up. Shop looks great! Nice place to work. Enjoy!
Your spot on, they do throw the heat as they are made of cast but, darn thing is pretty inefficient when it comes to wood consumption. Thanks for the compliment on the shop, I’ll be spending a lot of time in it.

We once owned a home built in 1816. I became a collector of oil lamps. And used to have lamp night once a week mainly in the winter. We live in a modern log home now. And just have a couple hanging.

About his fireplace, my Dad said he wished he had started at the top, so the brickwork would have looked good at the living-room hearth.

Another good video. I'm impressed with the 10 weeks timw frame. I do have a question regarding l;ighting and your work bench/ gun building bench, where will you get adequate light from when the shed doors are closed in the cold weather? Building a gun by lantern light is frustrating at best . Most of the old gunshops I have seen had a window above their bench for adequate light. Quite a few of the oldtime gunmakers worked at it in the winter when there was less demand on their time as opposed to the growing seasons.

Lighting will be a problem. I’m contemplating windows and where they should be. I’m going to need young Jonathan Gregor to come back and give us a lesson.
North facing window gives the best light.
The stove is big enough for a boiling pot as well. Thereby, giving you the ability to boil down rawhide into glue and such.
And make a cup of coffee!

Well my friend very nice very very nice well done I can't wait to see the bellows and I can't wait to see you banging out the steel on this thing because I'm going to model some of your stuff I'm a plagiarism some of your your ideas that you've been pushing for and put them in my forge I'm going to need to you know down the roadways maybe get a mailing address so I can send you some stuff that I've made just so you can give me comments and you know and see what if I'm on the right track I'm going to try to make him some more tomahawk heads and some knives and a lot of candle holders and things like that but yeah very nice you're you're a very good Carpenter I wish I had all your skills nice to hear from you again on and good luck deer hunting mine won't come around until end of December first part of January I got I did get a late tag but it's a doe tag but that's fine and Danny for me deer meets deer meat and I love I love deer meat stay warm it's really cold here where I am we got some really really heavy snow a couple feet on the ground seems to be melting away but it's going to you know the temperature is in the 17teenand it's been that way for a couple of three or four days so I got enough wood in and all that to get me by but where were you and where was I 25 years ago you know I was working as a logger for a while and and I didn't think I was really going to go this whole route that I am but thank you for your everything you've done on the internet you guys are awesome

Thanks my friend and you guys have a good hunt too be successful it's meet in the freezer that's why I'm going when it's going to be freezing cold outside cuz meet in the freezer and there's a lot of those on this property in the back side on the other side of the river I absolutely am odd with your capabilities as a carpenter and your knowledge about the old ways and the things that are happening back in the 17 and you know 1700s it's beyond me but I'm learning more and more I'd like to carry this on the same way that you're doing that's about a year or two down the road so God bless you guys and I'll see you later

There is space between the pipe and the wood and the pipe is supported by fence wire.
What did they do about mice? Shop is just cool....

To bad I didn't Know you 5 years ago. I shop closed down the road and a real Set of Blacksmith Bellows went for $ 200.00 Peter I have the same wood stove but is an original T Eaton's that sold for $7.50 in 1913 in my garage. Good luck hunting keep the powder dry.

Preserve the wood logs with both outside and inside?
I painted them with a vinegar and iron filings solution.
Did you use high temp mortar?
No. The fire isn’t in the chimney.
Don't sit your barrel directly on the ground . That white oak will rot quickly put three rocks under them.
