I have my Erode set to 6x and i rarely reset my tracks in practice. it is great practice for riding rough terrain even on simple tracks

I run all my testing sessions in 5X. It makes the flat tracks far more realistic. It also makes new lines viable when you make consistent ruts in the flat corners.
I run 5x deformation on singing player so I can get fast on rough tracks and in turn be faster on smooth/clean tracks online

It's only currently possible to lower the terrain, rather than *displacing* it, because in order to displace terrain, you must first compute all sorts of factors, including force, volume, vectors, etc. . Simply put, it's a real pain in the ass, and a GPU performance killer, to boot. With the way things are done now, it's simply too many lines of code, which are being asked to figure themselves out in a tiny span of time, which saturates GPUs and CPUs in a hurry.
Running enthusiast-grade hardware would make almost no difference. The core processes/hardware are still too inefficient to do such a thing reliably. If you want evidence of this, just look up a video of Snowrunner (which is a bloated, stuttery *mess* of compressed .xml directories). When you force it to run uncompressed, it barely functions at all. Their terrain-deformation does rise up as well as drop, but just like everything else in Snowrunner, it's all over the bloody place. It doesn't behave like mud at all.
