    Hello Uncle D,
Yes, “Là-bas” means “over there.” J.J.G. discovered Sirima singing for people in the subway's corridor in Paris. Seduced by her incredible voice, he proposed her a duet with him (Là-bas, so). Unfortunately, her companion of the time, very jealous, killed her with a knife two years after. If it was not, maybe Sirima would be now an international singer like Lara or Céline (?). Sad story…
This song talks about the first migrants to America. But, like you say, it can be transposed to all migrants who search for a new chance in another country or in a metropolis of their country.
You should try “On ira.” (We'll go), “Né en 17 à Leidenstadt” and “Juste après.” 3 beautiful songs of J.J.G.
    Peace, folks.☮👈😎

it's the most beautiful JJG duet of his career, knowing that he also sang with Céline Dion but the version with Sirima is legendary especially knowing the tragic end of this singer

    Cordialement

One of the greatest song of JJG... on his greatest album, imo (Entre Gris clair et gris foncé)... unfortunately, Sirima was murdered 2 years later...
In the same album : "C'est ta chance"

You got it, as usual ! It is the theme of emigration like the previous “Long is the road”. The theme of departure is recurrent in Goldman songs (not always emigration, but leaving), perhaps because he is a son of immigrants. Another examples, “On ira”, and in my patreon requests “Puisque tu pars” (live and subtitled for once 👍)

Hi D, very good react. Thank you.
"Là-bas" speaks of the need to escape and the dilemma between the hope of a “better” elsewhere and the loss of one’s loved ones. He dreams of a more fruitful life, she offers stability, rootedness.

    You got it!
For the story: few time after the song came out, Sirima was murdered by her boyfriend and, except one’s with Céline Dion and maybe in few other occasions, Goldman don’t sing it anymore

He sang the song alone live, with the audience doing Sirima's voice. It must have been very moving.

Many of the French songs you've heard are about the United States. This one is about immigration like "Long is the road"

About the video, I think they are in Mexico (the country) and he leaves with other illegal immigrants to cross the border to reach Eldorado.

You(ve spotted the thing. Imigrants. Leave your native country to find a better life (may be). Of course, in the subtext, the american dream, but it's not the only way. May be other country, a european one... Anyway. The plot of the song (and the video too) : I will find a real job, I'll send you money and prepare you to make you in. But there is no certainty that it could word as it's planned.
    Thank your for your work.
