I have seen news footage of a Canadian police sniper shooting a pistol out of a man's hand but the circumstances where very specific.
    1. The situation involved was a man waving a gun around in an aggressive manner. He'd fired some shots but he didn't appear to be targeting any bystanders or the police who were trying to deal with the situation. It looked like a genuine case of someone trying to commit suicide by cop by provoking them into killing him.
    2. He was outside his home in the driveway and it was broad daylight.
    3. The standoff had been going on for some time and the man was getting tired. He finally sat down on a chair resting his elbows on his knees and dangling the pistol between his legs so the pistol was essentially braced in place and, if the shot accidentally triggered the pistol, the round wouldn't be flying towards someone else.
    4. The shot was fired by a police sniper with a scoped rifle and not by a regular patrolman with a service pistol or carbine.
    5. The shot was fired at less than 75 meters (roughly 80 yards) and the shooter had roughly 40 seconds to make adjustments and time his breathing cycle.
    6. The pistol was a large frame semi-automatic (possibly a Glock though it was hard to say for sure) so it was a fairly big target. The sniper also had a good angle so there was little danger for a ricochet hitting the man in the legs.
    7. Judging by how quickly other police moved to tackle the man this had already been coordinated and approved by the negotiator.
So yes, in a one in a million situation a police officer can shoot a pistol out of someone's hand. By should we expect a regular patrolmen with a service pistol, shotgun or carbine to do it against a moving target in poor light when missing could mean an officer or a bystander being killed? Hell no.

Shot guns where also very popular because you can use bird shot for greater Variety of game being birds.
Solid shot for large mammals, buck for buck/deer literally.
The Winchester model 1887 made over 3 dozen bird species in about a week before the USA put laws in place
Daniel Myron LeFever 1883 hammerless shotgun had great influence on this Winchester.
Britain & the continentals foresaw this hunting problem before it occured & britain changed bird laws as far back as the 1820's in responce to the hammered black powder shot guns that became common in the 1790's made notable Joseph Manton considere3d the father of the modern shotgun from 1766-1835.
Needle fire hammerless shotguns of all sorts existed as far back as the 1830's in Belgium & France.
Though centre fire rounds existed since 1808 they where had no caps till the French clement Pottet in 1829 that where only perfected till 1855 due to many problem especially concerning safety for the user.
Oldest centre fire hammerless shotgun I am aware of is a British Joseph Lang 1864.
Have seen older European centre fire shotguns but all had hammers to my knowledge.
Really America got into Shotguns quiet late compared to Britain & the continent.
Yanks love their pistols like revolver they try to take claim through colt of 1835 but The first percussion revolver was made by Lenormand of Paris in 1820 and the first percussion cap revolver was invented by the Italian Francesco Antonio Broccu in 1833.
Black powder revolvers go back to late 16th century Europe & 15th century china with no surviving examples.
Communist china destroyed so much of their history.
only writings out side of china remain sadly.
Germany has most of the oldest Matchlock revolver example I am aware off.

As a person who worked as a police officer for two years, you’d be absolutely SHOCKED by how little training police get as a result of lack of funding.
I attended one of the highest rated police academies in North America, the “Department of Public Safety Training Academy” in Sitka Alaska. The training period lasted 4 months, and amounted to little more then a crash course.
Once on active duty, we only received firearms refresher training once per year. We were SUPPOSED to be able to request ammunition to practice at the range on our own time, but we NEVER had any extra ammo to spare for such a luxury. I was also supposed to receive ongoing training multiple times throughout the year as a new officer, but we never had the budget to actually send me…
Also, most of the time, I was literally the only officer on duty in my area… no backup to call besides a whole different department.
People seriously have no conception of how desperately underfunded AND understaffed the majority of US police departments are. And the whole “defund the police” movement made things a whole lot worse.
Just remember that the next time you see a video of a cop screwing up, or not knowing the law in his area. They basically showed that dude a PowerPoint presentation, handed him a gun and a badge, then put him on permanent night shift (rendering him basically delirious with exhaustion).
      What a world.

There has been trick shots. In the past that were quite amazing. Annie Oakley was something out of this world. With her aiming and shooting abilities. Some of her records still stand today. The reason she was so good at shooting was mostly practice. She started shooting at a young age. To feed her family as she got older people would talk about how this little girl could shoot and handle different guns. She shot lever action rifles and pistols with deadly accuracy. She would put on shows in towns and make bets with the very best shooters of the time. She fell in love with a sharp shooter and joined the Wild Bill show and traveled to England to show the King and queen her abilities. She was one the could shoot a gun out of someone's had. She would shoot a cig out of the mouth of someone everytime. Ya she used special ammo most of the time. Like I said before she is one that could easily shoot a gun out of the hand of someone. I think she had an act where she did just that. It was a very expensive act so they dropped it out of the show. Also they had a hard time predicting where the bullet would end up. Hitting bystanders on accident. There were quite a few people hit and even killed from ricocheting bullets. These were never published. If they were it was always the fault of the person standing in the wrong spot. Today we know that ricochet bullet can't be predicted. Back in the 1800s it was the people hits fault for standing to close. It's amazes me how different things were a hundred and fifty years ago.

Doc Holliday did it once. Ain't that a daisy?
Most of the time-for less skilled combatants who actually care if they survive- if a bullet hits the hand, and the hand is held in front of the body, the bullet could pass through the hand and hit the torso as well at most ranges and angles. This would result in wounds to the hand AND center mass.

I remember a local incident, probably late 90s, early 2000s, where an armed man was held up in a gas station. The cops sent a dog, but he shot it. Next the cops shot him in the leg, but it didn't stop him either. After being shot in the other leg did he go down and later die at the hospital. As for weakness of old pistols, there's historical cases of British officers emptying their revolver into an attacking enemy and still getting struck with a sword or a bayonet. One reason some preferred to carry large caliber, single-shot pistols instead.

    • @SilntObsvr
      @SilntObsvr Před rokem

This was the exact reason for the rush-to-production creation of the Smith & Wesson Model 1917. American troops in the Philippines were reporting that the .38 Colt revolvers they had were failing to stop charging Moro warriors -- they needed something bigger! The US already had the perfect choice: the Colt 1911 (1911A1 wasn't quite out yet), but there weren't enough of those pistols yet available for the need. The ammunition, on the other hand, had good supply, and S&W already had a double action revolver chambered for .45 Colt; all that was required to shoot .45 ACP was milling the cylinder to accept the rimless round on moon clips. Done, shipped, and lots of American's *didn't* get chopped up by bolo wielding crazies.
And this was much of the ammunition that fueled the caliber wars that continue to the present, more than a century later.
Still, to the point of this video -- even competition shooters can't shoot well enough to reliably hit a gun in someone's hand in the time an incipient gunfight allows, never mind when the gun hand is moving or the light is bad -- and cops in general are NOT competition shooters, most of them are just about good enough to stay qualified.

i think Mythbusters tested this as well if i recall, more from the physics question of: will a bullet from one gun impacting another gun have enough force to knock it out of someone's grip? dont remember how they ruled it or what season/episode it was from, but i remember them rigging one pistol to shoot at an old revolver or something iirc. i dont think they really accounted for surprise/reaction to impact shock though. or for how whats probably more likely to happen in that situation is that you're gonna shoot a hole in somebody's hand/wrist/arm.
i remember seeing that SWAT sniper clip in its entirety waay back in the day too, where he shot the gun out of the guy's hand on the plastic chair. the guy was basically sitting in the chair and threatening suicide in the middle of the street, and police were afraid he'd decide to point/shoot at police in order to trigger a "suicide by cop" scenario, and they'd tried talking him down and were not getting anywhere. i believe the sniper himself suggested attempting the shot and was surprisingly approved, and succeeded! he wasnt at a crazy-far distance away from the target as far as sniper-shots go, and it shows how powerful a sniper-rifle is from how that revolver went flying out of the dude's hand.

      @FieryCheeze Před rokem

Re: Mythbusters - IIRC, they ruled it plausible under the right circumstances. They obviously couldn't completely account for the human factor as they're not going to start shooting at humans. But IIRC the robot hand couldn't hold onto the gun, especially when hit from a perpendicular angle. Getting hit straight on was harder to shoot out of the hand since most hand grips are designed to go backwards with recoil anyway.

Yeah one those countless "fancy but impractical" shooting tactics from Hollywood, is it technically possible, sure, would it be likely to pull of in a realistic gunfight intentionally, not really.
Another one of those fancy trick shots that Hollywood thinks is common tactics would be shooting a feeling suspect in the legs in a way that's non-lethal, could it be done maybe, but you'd need to hit a specific spot to miss the major blood vessels in the body to not have the suspect bleed to death before they hit the ground, so it's not really a practical non-lethal option.

I would say that if a gunman were to deliberately shoot a gun out of another's hand, that would end any gun fight. It's a total boss move. The disarmed man would have the option of picking up the gun and getting just a as accurate a shot to his noggin as he attempted to do so. He'd either surrender or, if given the opportunity, run. Like killing someone with a thrown knife, I'm sure it's happened in real life. But like a killer knife throw, hardly more than once in millions of gun confrontations.

There is a chance for a one hand usable gun like a revolver to make the opponent drop their weapon. But at that point, the gun is probably powerful enough to knock the man out cold with a well placed, but a million times easier shot to the chest.
If you got something like a 44 or 50 caliber revolver, hitting the opponents arm or the gun in any way is going to take them out of the fight. But at that point, they could very easily just bleed out in a matter of seconds, so just go for center mass.
