    Ok, I'm a DYI guy. About a year ago, I installed "Add on" Enclosed blinds to a 15 light door. The extra weight caused the door to "catch" at the top, side. I've been meaning to "Shim" the hinges, to stop the sagging, ever since. I wanted to double check the shimming procedure, and ran across this video. At first I was skeptical, thinking that I would pull the screws right out of the door by prying on the hinges. But after watching this somewhat effortless procedure, I thought, what hey, if I strip the screws, I can always go back with longer ones. Long story, longer, This method worked GREAT. I pried carefully, and did not strip the screws. The door opens and closes perfect! Thank you, Joe!! Great advice!

    Thanks for trying this technique! In some cases, this way will not work, depending on your gap behind the hing, or not. Sometimes other things might have to be done to the existing door jamb in order to make the needed corrections, but I have used this method on numerous occasions & thought I should post it. Glad you found this video! Joe :0

    This is a great video, we recently replaced our front door with a half lite, I did not replace the frame but over time it started to sag as the new door was much heavier than the older one. Love the tips you give. Most videos tell how to "adjust" the hinge because the door rubs on the side of the door frame. Well my problem with more than one door in my house is that the door sticks on the top of the frame. I don't see any videos yet that shows how to adjust a hinge for this type of offset. I know a door planer will work, but if I wouldn't have to go rent one just by adjusting a hinge, I`d rather do that.Thanks

    • @VideoJoeKnows
      @VideoJoeKnows  Před 8 lety

      +YoMoma777 How about using a belt sander? That would work good. There is not a door hinge that adjusts for your dilemma. Your house has settled & is now causing the top of your door to hit the door header. i would not suggest you remortising your hinges. Yes belt sander would do it. Make a straight line & use that as a guide when using the belt sander so you get a straight line from end to end. If you don't have one you could rent one of those cheaper than a door planer plus it will be easy for you to use. You will still need to be careful mind you, but easier I think than using the door planer. Thanks too for your kind words re: tips! Good luck with your project & let me know how you do! Joe :0

    My door latch was too low and missing the receiving hole so I just took a free paint stirring stick from Home Depot and loosened bottom hinge from door jamb then broke off about a 1/2” of paint stirring stick then slid it behind the door jamb hinge then tightened it down and now latch and receiver lines up perfectly! Takes about 2 minutes and it’s the perfect thickness! Try it!

    Worked perfect...though because it's winter and I didn't want to remove the door, I removed the trim next to the hinges and pulled just the top pin. I adjusted the top hinge barrels on the door like you demonstrated and then reinstalled the pin. The lock and deadbolt now engage with just a gentle push. Thank you! .

      Wow cool but too bad you removed the door trim since then you would have to reinstall it caulk it paint it etc not to mention if it would've cracked when you went to remove it as I have even seen some guys just remove the pin & bend in place however I've never done it that way before so I always remove the door, heavy or not, then do as I show on video before reinstalling. Can you determine if any of the shifted portion of the door jamb might be able to be resecured in order to lessen your gap issues? Sounds like your wall has severely shifted. If you have a crawl space under your house, you may want to get in there & check out any floor issues in that same area. You could also shim out the top hinge but then the bottom of the door may rub but I would rather cut that off than the actual side face of the door. Look at it & make your decision & go for it! The hinges were tightly in, so putting a longer screw did not solve it for me. I found that this it was sagging/catching at the bottom vertical edge. The trick was actually to make the top hinge slightly looser (so that the door twists slightly clockwise) - this did the job.

  • @TheOpelkoenjas

    You could also use some cardboard or a very thin piece of wood on the lower hinges to lift the door. Unscrew the hinge from the frame (not from the door), put the cardboard underneath it and screw it on again (lower hinge and maybe the middle hinge, depends on the gap it needs to cover). Sometimes you'll need to adjust it a bit (trial and error), but it should do the trick too and it's a bit faster (not having to lift the door out of the hinges every time you need to adjust it a little bit more). Of course this depends on how big the gap is and how much the door rubs onto something. With big gaps your method might be a better way. But with my method you can't really screw things up (bending the knuckles to far or crooked, etc) when it comes to smaller gaps and less rubbing.
    But otherwise, neath trick! It's embedded in my brain in case I ever need it.
    Cheers!

    • @VideoJoeKnows
      @VideoJoeKnows  Před 8 lety +2

      +TheOpelkoenjas Ha! I just had to use my bend knuckle on hinge method this afternoon as a matter of fact & it worked fine! Your method could work to a certain extent depending on how much gap there is when the door is closed. Lots of times there's not a very big gap at bottom of door jamb where door closes so you can't do this to raise the door up high enough. Usually the top of the door has already sagged so that's why i go work up there first then see what I have to do after all my efforts have been exhausted at the top portion fo the door. yes I have other methods of fixing a sagging door & it just depends what the door has to offer me as every door (gaps etc) is different so knowing what to do & when to do it is vital. Thanks for your message!

    Instead of using a screwdriver on the hinge pins, I use the cutters, just like you did with the nail. You get all the benefits of using them on the nail plus, with the screwdriver, it could slip off and gouge the door.

  • @VideoJoeKnows
    @VideoJoeKnows  Před 11 lety

    That's a very good question. I wish I could see your door first hand. I do know that stained glass insert panels are heavy & this could've caused the door jamb to shift slightly &/or your home is going through some settling that may have caused the door jamb to slightly tilt so the door wants to swing open if not all the way closed. Are you needing to push the door into the frame since the door edge is hitting the door jamb edge? Joe :0

    Thanks for this great video. Our back door has been sagging for years. We tried putting the cardboard type things in the bottom hinge to straighten it out but now it's too far gone. The door has shifted again and it's hitting the floor and not lining up with the deadbolt lock so we can't lock our back door. Yikes. Hi, Nice video and explanation. Thanks. Wouldn't it be necessary to pass a pin/ rod while you are bending the knuckles individually? I am afraid I will not be able to bend them by exact equal amount. I might have missed it if you had placed one. Thanks for sharing. And please don't be apologetic about the explanation, I am the person who needs all the things talked to me. So Thanks for that too. Regards, :-)

    • @VideoJoeKnows
      @VideoJoeKnows  Před 8 lety

      +Priyam D You're just going to bend the hinge knuckles on the door only. Do just a little then try to do each one the same amount. Pretty easy to do once you start doing it. Then get your eye down there as a site & see if they look all about the same. Put the door back up & see how it fits & if it looks like you need to tweak the door hinge a little bit more you will then have to remove the door & try again. I don't always get it perfect the first time so I take the door down & go at it again so I know I've done the best I could. You can do it! Thanks for your comments! Joe :0

  • @VideoJoeKnows
    @VideoJoeKnows  Před 11 lety +1

    Look at your door where it swings in. Is the door sagging to where the top side edge of door is hitting the edge of the door jamb? If it is, that is also what might make the door want to swing open since the door is now not plumb (vertical level). Do you have a gap between the top hinge & the door jamb more so than the other 2 hinges? Watch this video again & ask yourself if your door is doing pretty much the same thing. If you need to, send me more info. Thanks for commenting. Joe :0

    Hi, we just bought a 26x80 pre-hung interior door in Frame, the frame is level but it tilts left. I've tried putting shims at the bottom hinges to bring everything closer. It feels like it's very springy and doesn't close properly with the shims.
    The minute we removed the plastic align tool that's when the door dropped prior to installing everything.

    Yes you could just tweak the center hinge a little too as you have mentioned. Lots of times though I don't & it still comes out fine, depending on how much your door is sagging, & how old your door/hinges are since older hinges have just a little slop in them so the middle one usually doesn't bind because of the slop you already have in it. It's a great way to adjust your door. Just make sure to keep pressure on the hinge as you tweak it so the hinge screws don't loosen up. Joe :0

    We had a new stained glass insert installed in our front steel door about 9 months ago and now it doesn't close properly. We have to keep it bolted or it will swing open, and you have to push the door into the door frame to bolt it closed. Which adjustment method do you think would work best?

    • @VideoJoeKnows
      @VideoJoeKnows  Před 7 měsíci

      Sounds like your door is heavier now for sure & that happened to cause it to sag just a bit & now you have to close the door into the door jamb as it sounds like the door might be rubbing a bit on the door jamb. You could try the method I show but I would try something else first & I have lots of sagging door videos on my channel that will show you other ways to go about fixing a sagging door before this method. Go to my main CZcams channel page then click on playlists & scroll down to doors & they will all be in there. What should I do if the door is hitting the very top of the door frame and the very top of the side door frame. The door at the top is hitting both surface when I close it.

    • @djtheory
      @djtheory Před 10 lety

      I don't have much of a gap to work with. When i adjust the hinge the top hits even more where the door won't shut at all and the side still touching also

    • @VideoJoeKnows
      @VideoJoeKnows  Před 10 lety

      Sounds like your door has really expanded with all the wetness in the air this winter. You could get a wood rasp at the store & rasp down the edge & top....or a belt sander. The idea is to attempt to make the repairs without having to damage any of the door. worst case scenario you'll have to sand/file down the edge &/or the top. I hate doing that though. Not sure how nice of a door you have or if it really doesn't matter....? If you think you can't do it, then the other way is to call in someone to do the repairs for you....but then you're talking some money.....depending on what they say etc... Thanks for your comments. Almost always this is due to the screws in the hinges are lose. Don't bother with the hinge pins unless you absolutely need to take the door out of the frame. Just tighten the hinge screws.

    • @VideoJoeKnows
      @VideoJoeKnows  Před 8 lety

      +Alex Abarca Your house could have settled a little & caused the door to not close properly. The weight of the door should really not be an issue but because the door is not brand new, the door jamb could've loosened up, the hinge pins could've worn a little causing the door to sag a bit, could be other issues as well like if you have a paneled door the door slabs could be moving around since the door is not brand new. Check it out a little & you should begin to see why your door is doing what it's doing. Let me know how it goes. Joe :0

    Any suggestions to fix a sagging storm front door? I see it catching on the bottom plate.

    • @VideoJoeKnows
      @VideoJoeKnows  Před 10 lety

      Those storm doors can be tricky to adjust after they are installed, as you can't do them the same way in which I show for a regular type door. You'll have to remove the mounting screws & move the metal storm door jamb over so you can adjust accordingly. I hate those doors to adjust later. Hope you don't have the screws that can't unscrew. If you do, you'll need some small vise grips to remove them. Then use some different type of screws or even use threaded bolts & washers, for an easier install. Make sure to predrill your holes so you don't break/twist off your bolt heads. Joe :0

      Mine seems to also have a thin metal rod that the door is aligned by. The metal rod goes from the top to bottom, but is not connected at the top of my door. I can manually lift the whole door and its fine, but then the door slides back down and then catches on the opposite side of where a person walks in to the house.

      @rmdyjoe Před 10 lety

    YOUR FIRED! Get rid of that stopper. that style stopper will continue to bend that door hinge as the door makes contact with it because that style stopper depends upon the metal hinge itself to stop the door at set range. That style stopper is the problem that will eventually bend that hinge in the opposite direction undesired to the direction you just bent it. thus, causing the door to be back at square one> the same issue. Remove that style stopper and install a fixed floor stopper and that problem is solved.

    • @VideoJoeKnows

      Your fix for the door is fantastic and I love it. I just mentioned the stopper because i have had many issues as stated with theses same stoppers bending the door hinge when they are stressed with minimal pressure in many.cases. I would use your technique as it is a great alternative than more time consuming options. My house has several piers due to foundation settling. I need more. So i have doors that wont shut and leveling the house with more piers will fix it. but in the time being I am going to use your remedy because once the house is leveled i can just bend the hinge back to its original state without adjusting the square of the door or frame. NO your not fired. that was my humor is all.
