    Long post alert for the benefit of all after personally doing a blind test between Bose, Marshall, and Soundcore:
    I was looking to buy a Bluetooth speaker recently and saw a lot of CZcams reviews on Bluetooth speakers - particularly Bose Flex and Marshall. I finally went to a store in Dubai and checked out Bose SL Flex, Bose Revolve plus 2, Marshall Emberton, Bose SL Mini 2 (SE), Soundcore Motion plus, Soundcore x600 and Soundcore Motion 300. I took a friend of mine and did a blind test with him, switching the sound between multiple speakers. My thoughts:
    Bose SL Flex vs Revolve plus vs SL Mini 2: Flex was smaller, but it gave stiff competition to Revolve in the sound dept, in fact sounding better than Revolve sometimes. The revolve has a very sweet tone and we felt it polishes the harsh sounds and gives out a smooth output, which you may not want while listening to say a live concert. The Flex may not be as sweet but it had incredible clarity and fullness, and given the price difference it did not make sense to go with the more expensive Revolve which was 2x the price of Flex. The Revolve’s micro USB proprietary charging was also a put off for me. The Mini 2 Special Edition was crap as I could barely hear its sound even in that small glass room.
    Vs The Souncore x600: x600 sounded great with the Spatial audio on, but it's not as portable, and didn't sound as good without Spatial Audio.
    Vs Marshall Emberton 2: Emberton was good but it simply could not match upto the Flex in giving those punchy outputs with clarity.
    Flex vs Motion 300: I was almost sure to buy the Bose Flex by now, and for the heck of it I tried the Soundcore Motion 300. I was blown away by Motion 300's clarity and power given that it's much cheaper than the Bose Flex. We played Hotel California, some Bollywood songs, instrumental music and chants on all speakers, and Motion 300 competed neck to neck with Revolve and Flex, in fact sounding better many a time. My friend who came along with me is into music production, and even he was surprised by the loudness and clarity of sound reproduction by Motion 300. It sounded better than Revolve most of the times, and went neck to neck with Flex (sometimes sounding even better). I finally ended up buying the Motion 300, and super happy for the purchase. I am sure there are better speakers out there but those could be more expensive. Motion 300 to me gave the best bang for the buck without compromising on sound quality.
    Negatives: My only big gripe is that both the Flex and Motion 300 don’t come with the 3.5 aux input (damn you Apple for starting this trend). And Motion 300 is a heavy speaker which is surprising given its size. I am not a sound expert but sharing my honest views as an average listener. Hope this helps

    • @DavidGomesinsomnia
      @DavidGomesinsomnia Před 6 dny

      Very well done comparison between the 3 speakers. And I totally agree with you on one point in particular and thats the gripe element..I really needed that 3.5mm Aux port..it might be a deal breaker for me as far as Motion 300 is concerned..I almost bought Motion 300 but held back because of the lack of 3.5mm aux port..I finally settled for 2 Tribit Flow speakers, in stereo mode, where Im not having to push them too hard, say, abv 60-65% volume tops. Not my finest purchase but if only Motion 300 had 3.5mm port, i'd have most certainly gone for it. Cheers!
      P.S.: I also got a pair of Earfun Uboom Ls and I have to say, they sound might good, punches way above their weight and l really like Uboom L's sound signature..its punchy and weighty..using the pair in stereo mode..very happy and satisfied with this purchase compared to the Tribit Flow.

    I have the Motion+ and have used it every day at work for a year or so now and have had a few others but keep coming back to it. Is there anything that is in the same size range and/or price range that competes with it? I wonder why there aren't more speakers with more defined tweeters in addition to the standard speaker arrays so commonly offered. I got the boombox looking Motion offering and it was such a direct step back from the Motion+, immediate return. But yeah, seeing these it piqued my interest and was curious as to what else is out there similar to the Motion+ or a little better but still in the same general form factor. Heck, for that matter, I'd like to see you do an update to the Pound For Pound series, see where all these things are actually chalking in at, those were super useful videos I felt. Thank you Alan ❤ I was hoping for a comparison between the Flow and the Motion 300 and you even threw in the Flex in, for an in depth comparison 🙏
    The Soundcore Motion 300 surprised me in a good way here, I was expecting weaker, distorted bass from samples in some other videos but it goes a tad lower and plays somewhat clean instead here.
    Its midrange sounds fairly musical, with a sort of reasonable frequency response and possibly lower intermodal distortion than the others. That'll be my choice then!
    Do you think it's possible to make its frequency response flat with the semi-parametric EQ? I calibrate all my speakers with REW & UMIK-1 so I plan to do the same with that one 😄
    Shame that the Q of each band can't be adjusted, it wouldn't be particularly hard to implement.

    • @alanrossreviews
      @alanrossreviews  Před 8 měsíci +6

      these speakers all sound dull as hell when really tuned flat, there isnt the dynamics or actual range in such tiny speakers to be able go that route. what you end up doing is simply layering eq upon eq which ends up a mess. using their own app you dont have the leeway to go full flat. of course if you smooth the hell out of it on a graph you can appear flat but really its still wavy without smoothing, remember their so called parametric eq is based on signature mode, you dont get a blank canvass to tune. if you stick this in xtra bass mode and fire some bass heavy tracks at it you will still hear some overdriving, its not totally clean sounding, signature mode is ok though.

    • @supercurioTube
      @supercurioTube Před 8 měsíci +2

      @@alanrossreviews I don't think a speaker would necessarily sound dull when tuned for an accurate/flat frequency response.
      But then for speakers where the bass rolls off above 60Hz or higher I agree it's favorable to boost it in order to simulate a neutral tonal balance.
      Probably it helps to increase high frequencies on that one as well as they drop quickly off-axis with this type of driver, also to keep a neutral tonal balance when factoring room reflections.
      I guess I agree with you then 😄 and look forward to play with it.
      On EQ over EQ, that's not a problem. Only the phase response gets a bit messed from the many IIR filters adding up but you typically can't hear that.
      Can you get a coupon / affiliate link? I'd like to order it in a way that benefits you.

    • @alanrossreviews
      @alanrossreviews  Před 8 měsíci

      @@supercurioTube no small speaker is tuned flat for a reason. Every speaker i hear called neutral or flat is either bass light and/or has a high end boost. You need full range larger speakers imho as i said. I think i flogged this one to death but flat by what measurement? A sine wave 1m sweep? Honestly that myth is so flawed. So many factors demolish that myth not least the size of bass waves and how they have to be measured seperatly and spliced in. Flat by industry standard is a useful starting point to understand how it would sound within parameters in a given location.

    • @supercurioTube
      @supercurioTube Před 8 měsíci +2

      @@alanrossreviews ah yes it's wise to define what's meant by "flat" first, because everyone has their own definition.
      For me that would be targeting +-1dB or less around 0db flat line on an average of on-axis & off-axis measurements, for the speaker response itself (in anechoic conditions)
      For indoors conditions, I typically prefer letting the room do its thing, until the bass where I will correct for obvious room resonances.
      For speakers that can be anywhere, well that's clearly more complicated 😄
      But you often see speakers tuning that mix in room, boundary or off-axis corrections in with a lot of assumptions baked in.
      I wouldn't swear too much by industry standard tho after having worked at a speaker company for a few years (you reviewed some of their products). A lot of the sound engineering there was about randomly guessing what is "popular" without actual research, data or process, or loosely copying what competitors do. Sometimes matching what 1 guy with a "golden ear" decided it has to be. So .. yeah.

I couldn't help noticing the extra detail when playing stereo which gets cancelled when downmixing to mono which was more apparent on some tracks than others. Hope you managed to navigate the strap on the 300 eventually. ( I guess you put your Soundcore quid to good use) Anyway should I buy one to add to my apparently never ending collection of these toys? I ordered a Motion 300 a couple days ago and just received it. I like how it's not a clone of the Bose Flex with the stereo speakers. Plus a decent size battery, I think it looks cooler and it's cheaper. I think the extra bit of weight makes it feel solid. The app is useful as well. All the EQ settings, you can adjust the brightness of the buttons, you can turn off the start up sound (YES!). No where to plug in my karaoke mic but you can't have everything for 80 dollars!

    Bose's aesthetic design, metal build, feel of use, weight, size, sound, and no need to EQ in different placements, and overall experience seems to be beyond Soundcore. I LOVE Soundcore, and for a budget travel speaker for sure it's the one, for actual bang for the buck, Bose seems to be the one. Oluv has a great set of custom eqs for $4. My favorite is his "UBoom L" tunings, which gave it detail and brightness in the right areas. I modified it myself to reduce the bass, because I still found it to be too boomy for my ears (just like the Signature tuning). Certain bass heavy recordings that include synths or high pitch sounds, are the best way to test how that one single driver handles it.
      The reason that the bose has clear sound no matter what, is because the driver is pretty well made, bose are known for well engineered drivers, and also they polished the tuning and the passive radiators in a way that the driver doesn't have to produce useless low frequencies that can mess up the high frequency reproduction and fck up the sound quality.. even tho it doesn't have the ability to reach as low as the flow, it really gives the illusion of larger sounding because of that boomy character, especially outdoors..

    I want to buy a speaker from this category, and I am thinking about Motion 300 (maybe also due to its actual price - 67 EUR/57 GBP).
    I am aware of its issues (more or less, because I never heard it in reality). But I want a speaker with some mids and hights as well.
    It will play at least 12/24 hours day/night in the living room, all genres, plus vocals and instruments, mostly at low volume (ocassionally mid volume).
    Bose Sound Flex is nice, but I feel like the bass is too much (plus almost triple price, mono...).
    Although Sound Flex and Charge 5 are maybe flagships, and I love them, I feel like I need something else.
    But I am afraid Motion 300 might be too much of something else (or too less actually).
    However, I want a little feel of bass filling the room.
    I want to use its signature EQ because I keep changing the BT source between multiple smartphones and laptops.
    That's why I don't want to consider its app.
    By the way, do you know if Motion 300 runs ok while being constantly on charging? (I know some speakers either don't function, either have a background noise while charging).

    When you pair 2, what would be better for watching videos? Where ist the latency better with 2 speakers paired? How ist the latency on the Bose Soundlink Flex? I am afraid to buy it due to Bluetooth 4.2 and just SBC codec,. I tried Bose Soundlink Flex from a friend on my MacBook but even with one (without party mode) the latency was noticeable when I was watching videos. I am traveling a lot and I would use 2x where I live and 1x on the road. The latency on Android should be much better than with IOS? Why is Latency on IOS always so bad with bluetooth speakers. Is the Flip 6 better in this regard? Somehow I think it sounds better than the Bose after trying it out at an electronics store. The Flip 6 sounds more clearer and crispier to me but has less bass than the Bose Soundlink Flex. You can EQ the Flip 6 and improve the bass and it works somehow pretty well. How would the Flip 6 be in stereo? Or is it maybe better just to buy a Charge 5? Is the increase in weight worth it and will the sound quality be much better? I think about gotten 2x Flip 6, 2x Bose Soundlink Flex or 1x Charge 5. Could you help me with my decision? What would you recommend for listening to classical music? I also won't charge my phone or use the Charge 5 as a power bank ever. For me sound quality ist the most important thing followed by latency because I watch movies and videos, too. Thank you very much in advance Alan.

    It's good to know Soundcore can still produce a competitive product when they set their mind to it. That said, I'd personally opt for the Flex in spite of its more primative app and sbc codec limitation. The additional cost is worthwhile, imho, for what it offers (but I'd still try to catch it on sale for a better value proposition 😉). I'd still take the Tribit over Soundcore if for no other reason than Soundcore's recent business practices. Thank you for another excellent review and comparison, Alan! 😁👍👏

Coming from someone who largely listen to 70s and 80s rock/metal and the pop scene of that age with an occasional embrace of the alternative scene of the 90s.
