    I don't mind her taking up a different persona for her US debut so long as she puts out good music and also never lose that Chaerin side in her. I won't expect 2NE1 to exist forever but I hope the members never forget what they had together with us Blackjacks all these year. They mean a lot to me as they appeared in my life where I was struggling to accept my differences and I hope it meant something to them as well, the way they helped people learn that it was okay to go against the norm and it was okay to not be perfect all the time.
    Don't lose yourself gurl. Love you since 2009~ ❤

      How do you know that's the real her? In Korea, you have to keep up a certain image, personality, and concept; you're basically a brand to a record company, this is no secret, it is what it is. I'd believe it more that this is her trying to be her true self, rather than vice versa, now that she actually has a say in her music. She's not in the US, doing bubblegum/fake badass KPOP. She's here as a solo artist to do HER.

    • @shannontsl
      @shannontsl Před 7 lety +1

      xmirame If you were onto them since the very start and watched all their behind the scenes you can tell what is real and what's not. Just a simple one would be her habit of bringing a rilakkuma plushie with her on her plane rides. In fact, 2ne1's CL is already different from Lee Chaerin in everyday life so yeah. I was talking about the way she presents herself during interviews and whatnot you can clearly tell that she is holding herself back and putting up a front. How is that the real her when every words she says in these interviews just feels so calculated? But I won't blame her though she should do what she needs to do. I just don't want her to lose herself. This is what I think it's like so don't bother arguing my opinion.

      moonbinfluenza how is she taking a different persona? She always idealize herself in her every piece of music she wrote (I'm the baddest female, etc). That's her brand. Whichever Chaerin we know, is the one Cl put out for the world to see.

  • @yadiaag7771
    @yadiaag7771 Před 7 lety +101

    shes right. It takes so much energy to hate, cause chaos, think and write hateful messages that is pathetic and at the same time wasteful. If people took even half that amount of feelings to say something nice to the things they loved they would create something truly beautiful. I saw her Live in Seattle and words cannot express how grateful i was to see her trying so hard singing so much, dancing so effortless. Shes CL because she created herself as such.
    The years of pain and hard work are and will payoff CL!

      I was at that concert too, it was one of the best ones I've ever experienced. She's got an amazing game on stage. The more people that notice her will inevitably lead to more hate, but also more love. A lot of people on CZcams are sour 'cause they want 2NE1, not CL, which is understandable, but to hate on her because she wants to do her own thing is not called for. Hopefully the positive voices will drown out the hateful ones over time, but until then I suppose it's good for a laugh. CL appreciates the hate in any case. I'm hoping the best for her debut.

    It would be impossible for me to reply to every single comment on here about my thoughts on CL's method in breaking into the states, so I'm gonna make a new comment regarding my thoughts. First, I don't think CL was denying that the US market is a hard one to break. she talks about doing it right, and part of doing it right is taking time with it. It's not like the South Korean market which is much more fast paced and it's just so over saturated. When CL says she's taking time to do it right, she's not incorrect, because time is part of doing it right. Through these past years she's been building connections and becoming more visible to non kpop fans, which is a tedious but completely necessary process. Secondly, I do feel that CL's persona is a bit off putting in general. She talks and sings and raps about being the baddest bitch but that's not her. Yes, a stage persona can simply be a character, but, I'm not gonna put out a rap saying I grew up in Compton and I was in a gang and I drink forties or whatever because that's a legit lie. The difference is that a character can almost be a fantasy or something fake, when Cl's persona as a bad bitch is fake for her, but a real thing for others. And that's off putting, acting like you're about a life when you aren't. I'm not saying she should be bubblegum and sweet, but come on, she's seriously not apart of that lifestyle. Third, I've seen some people say how they don't like CL saying she wants to be a crusader or representation for Asian American women because she's not Asian american and that the stereotype has already been broken. Let me just say that as an Asian American Woman, that it would be completely ignorant to say that the stereotypes have been broken. We do have more Asian women in media, Constance Wu is a great example, but we are still so limited in public figures. While CL by far won't be the first Asian she'll still be one of the few, and we need that. The US is a huge country, I live in Socal so maybe I don't experience too much racial profiling and racism in my every day life but what about Asians in the mid west, Asians in the south, where maybe there aren't very many Asians and they face these stereotypes. Finally, if you're a kpop fan and you don't like CL's work in America that's fine. People need to realize CL isn't trying to bring kpop to America. CL is trying to debut in the American market as a solo artist. She won't being doing kpop. So if you feel alienated because you feel CL is changing too much to fit American tastes, I'm just gonna say suck it up because when entering the American market kpop fans are not her priority. It's the general mass of Americans, that's her target audience and yea you may not like it but respect that's what she's going for. Overall I'm supporting CL in this endeavor, more as an Asian American woman than a kpop fan tbh. It's gonna take time and effort but if she chips away at it I think she's in the right direction.

      Well I don't know why you quote " lifted " as something from her personality when obviously this song is not serious and it's a sample.
      It is not hard to understand that some people act a certain way depanding on areas and people without doing it on purpose. Does it means they are fake ? No, that's just the way they have been educated.
      ON stage : she's the bad bitch, strong aura with lot of enrgy OFF stage : she's just quiet, reserved and nice and everything make her who she is.

    • @nguyengirl7684
      @nguyengirl7684 Před 7 lety +18

      MoussaKendy my point is i'm not really a fan of how extreme she has taken her on stage persona. It's not just lifted. Some of her lines from dirty vibe go along the same lines. She can still be bad ass and strong but in the future i wish she could stop acting like she's from the Bronx or Compton or something because she's just not. I'm not saying these actions are fake, but they're fake when she raps about doing them. Because she's not from that background. For example, dumbfoundead raps about some pretty hard shit, but he's not some "character", dumbfoundead actually lived through that he grew up in ktown and it was rough. Like when that shit Unpretty rapstar contestant truedy rapped about being one of Korea's first black people like wtf she isn't even black like even if she wrote those lyrics herself it's just off putting because it's not her.

      I mean, it basically is a trend. CL got so much hate in her MV (look at the comments) because people who didn't bother to watch and learn about her were crying "CULTURAL APPROPRIATION!!" Many accused her of stealing the black culture. Except, guess what? HIP HOP IS A MUSIC GENRE. IT DOESNT BELONG TO YOU!! That's what that kid was talking about. People who know nothing about CL or her music or her passion hate for her music. They don't know anything because they never bothered to look into her. I myself an a feminist, but I do agree with him. Its become a trend

    • @x3kimchii
      @x3kimchii Před 7 lety +26

      Feminism is definitely a trend when it comes to marketing campaigns e.g. H&M and Dove but outside the corporate sphere, they pertain to real issues too. If anything, I think black culture is the trend here. I watched her Lifted MV again and I don't think she's appropriating black culture (but that attempt at a Jamaican accent tho lmao...) but I guess it's not really my place to say anything since I'm not black. Overall, I think it's unfair of him to reduce feminism and cultural sensitivity to a social trend. Like how idiotic would it be if someone said to me, "oh you're only calling that person out cause it's a trend to be edgy" like no... cause maybe I actually care about feminism because it advocates for the dispersal of rape culture and maybe I actually care about cultural appropriation because I don't think its fair that the media praises Lady Gaga as a trendsetter for sporting dreadlocks but the host of Fashion Police can joke about Zendaya's locks "smelling like weed"

    I just am attracted to strong females, ,
    when I was a lil kid I wanted to be Donna Summers,
    my parents let me down as best they could, I was a scrowny white girl with no vocal range, lol, I took dance from 3 years old till 18, was in cheer, did choreography for my squad, was great with music, arranging, etc.. took that in uni, radio/tv/film,
    I never was a Donna Summers, however I feel my love for, and her music, her inner, outer beauty helped shaped the person I am!!
    if CL, helps girls from all walks of life, she's done a good job!!!
    I don't look at her as a South Korean, trying to do something she shouldn't, she needs to grab life by the balls and hang on tight!! cuz she will have great things happen for her, she's brave, beautiful and Hella talented!

    In my opinion, CL is going to keep climbing the staircase to success and power. Whether its in fashion, art, music or dance, she will keep dominating. Her reputation with 2NE1 has been flawless and powerful, no matter what people say. 2NE1 will always be the reason why she has become so successful in her career; also being how talented she is.-- --The point is that I am a huge fan of the group and really hate to say this but I think this is it for 2NE1. People say that they are still together, and even if or if not peaceful they have a contract to complete. But how strong can you keep a group together if its already breaking? Minzy has already left, Park bom has been MIA due to personal refection/ issues involving her past drug scandal, and CL is on her way to world domination. 2NE1 hasn't even had a single outing together since their 2015 MAMA appearance. How could CL ever possibly go back to a ( I hate to say it ) group who only has real power in Asia ( and us wall flowers across the globe)? The word is that CL is doing this USA debut(domination) in order to get 2NE1...advertising/ a ticket into the USA top hit charts/ a way to improve the groups success and reputation (considering 2014's drug scandal with park bom), but come one..does that make sense? In a way it does, but again CL is the beyonce of her group, and in my opinion, a star shines better on its own. CL might come back for one more comeback but in all honestly, their contract will always have an expiration date. Her true intentions are to succeed as a solo artist.

    Really think she's a sweet girl and I am in no way a "hater", but in my opinion this whole "struggling Asian artist" vibe I'm getting does not match the real situation she's in.
    She is signed with a big label ( plus she's already signed to one of the biggest companies in South Korea) and has one of the most successful managers in the music industry by her side, an already big fanbase, and has connections to many influential people in the music and fashion industry and a high net worth. So I don't know why she's depicted as some unknown indie artist who is struggling to make it in the US. She's got way more than she needs.

    • @enjogior5489
      @enjogior5489 Před 7 lety +3

      Gala Xy it's all about the perspective; from an audience point of view yes, she seems like she's got everything and reached all the goals she needs. But from an industry standpoint it's different, for the artist and the creators it's always about pushing that boundary and America is a tough market to break. By this I mean, if you asked a random person in NYC if they know CL, they probably will say no. its not about the wealth, shes not doing it for that because she has that already; its about taking her career further and America rappresenta that to her.

      Its not so much a "struggling Asian artist" ... starving artist thing. CL has a LOT of money and she's one of the most popular KPOP stars and has been for a LONG time.
      BUT ... its hard for Asians to get respect in America. CL struggles as do most Asians to be accepted as REAL and not just a "little thing imitating the big people".
      Korea has arguably the finest music industry on the planet right now ... and relatively few people are really aware of it outside of knowing about Psy and Gangnam Style.
      When Koreans come here and try to get successful ... they usually get made fun of and relegated to the back of the room. For those of us who pay attention - some of the incidents have been really embarrasing ... for us they barely register ... if at all. Over there - it is Yuuuggge.
      The time TMZ made fun of Asian artists about a year back. Tiffany (who is a Korean-American from San Fran btw) from Girls Generation getting disrespected at the first CZcams Awards when her group won the first ever Music Video of the Year for "I Gotta Boy" ... and some of the ways in which GG were talked to on various TV shows here the same year. The lack of respect Asian artists mostly get in Hollywood - where they've been picking White and later Jewish actors to play Asian parts for a hundred years. Examples - David Carradine getting Bruce Lee's role in "Kung Fu". Scarlett Johansson as Motoko Kusanagi in "Ghost in the Shell". Our media does little to introduce Americans to the myriad amazing aspects of Asian art.
      People in the West want to look down upon Asians - Westerners feel more comfortable with people they can look down on - especially intellectually. That usually doesn't work well with Asians for long - as most folks fairly quickly discover that the "little yellow people" (who really aren't either) can work harder, work longer, focus much better, and have a much higher sense of purpose, pride, and a history of creating culture and high intellectual acheivement when Westerners were still living in caves and wearing animal skins. Asians intimidate Westerners in their refusal to neither accept a low social status as a permanent limitation nor that they need the "charity of their Western betters" to succeed.
      Another thing is ... as a group, they don't do "victim" very well - the harder the struggle, the harder they motivate and as such - they aren't well like by folks who think they need "patronizing" by their "betters". Asians are hard people - they are very smart, they get trained hard (mostly by Tiger Mom's), and they tend to become cold in their emotions in public verses all touchy-feely as public displays of emotions are often discouraged in the more traditional parts of the various cultures.
      Westerners don't know how to emphathize ... or really even relate to most Asians especially with the vast structures of cultural tradition that permiate Asia that are opaque to most in the West.
      So yes, CL is a struggling artist ... as are all the other Asians who come here to try to add their culture to ours and teach us to appreciate theirs with the intent of earning the respect which they ARE so richly due.

    • @GalaXy-no3ww
      @GalaXy-no3ww Před 7 lety +3

      Enjogior Studio I understand what her mission is and I agree with you, it's not easy to make it in the US.
      My point was, I wished she would victimise herself less since she's very privileged compared to unknown, struggling Asian -American artists who won't ever get that opportunity; It seems she's not aware of that.

    • @GalaXy-no3ww
      @GalaXy-no3ww Před 7 lety +5

      MrBabylonandon In my opinion your overgeneralise "the Westerners"and it's even offensive. Not every westerner has ill feelings towards Asians. if that was the case, Kpop would not be so popular and people would not enjoy their culture as they do now. I think many enjoy the rich culture of Asians.
      About Cl, she is not an Asian-American and did not live or grow up in America to even face the racism and struggle many Asians face. I know she lived abroad for a while but I doubt that in those few years she struggled a lot ( although I cannot speak for her).
      Cl also doesn't bring anything from her own culture which would have made her debut much more interesting and refreshing. She just sells an image that she and people from her company have created, but it seems she's comfortable in that, which is fine , but not authentic.
      I think every minority group struggles to get into the music industry and many have to ask themselves whether they want to give in to "white America" and try to emulate their ideal standards, or if they want to embrace their own heritage or race and represent it in that their music.
      Cl, to me, did the first by completely leaving out her culture and being silent about any social issues (except for this interview)and instead trying to assimilate into the American Hip-Hop culture. Overall, the stuff she says is very egocentric.
      so from my perspective, she seems like a really unsuitable candidate to represent Asians in America; I doubt many that many Asian-Americans are going to identify with her.

    CL, I don't think avoiding the main issue is doing you any favors. The reason why it's taking you so long to break into the US market is because it's hard to break into the US market. There are not too many Asians that have done it in any form of entertainment. Also, it would be better to not alienate your already existing fanbase by adopting this entirely different persona just to break into the US market. Be yourself because you aren't doing yourself any favors by trying too hard. You aren't about that life. You are a "bad" girl when performing but there is nothing about your upbringing that was all that "hard" or "badass," which is TOTALLY FINE. Americans rip on anything they feel is not authentic and it's already a struggle to break stereotypes...so please, if you are going to do this, represent Asians better by being yourself.

    • @StrawberryBlond21
      @StrawberryBlond21 Před 7 lety +36

      I agree that it is hard to break into America, but I don't understand why you're saying she has a "different persona" and trying too hard. I've seen this CL since she did The Baddest Female. We all have. I don't perceive anything different. She's being herself.

    • @Yooncelebtarot
      @Yooncelebtarot Před 7 lety +21

      I've been following her since her debut in 2009. Her baddest female persona is something she adopted for her solo debut. I personally feel like she needs to be more true to herself rather than try too hard to be "bad" or "American." I also don't like when she makes sweeping generalizations about how Asians are perceived in America in her interviews especially since she has been living here for like a minute. She talks about the struggle about breaking into America as if she's been doing it her entire life which is kinda bullshit.

    • @StrawberryBlond21
      @StrawberryBlond21 Před 7 lety +20

      Yoonbread Something she adopted for her solo debut? But I've seen this CL since forever. She's not even doing anything risqué or outrageous that I haven't seen her doing before. And it's just like you said: an stage persona that I've been seeing for quite a long time. You don't have to be living in the US for your entire life to know how a race is perceived there. You just have to belong to it. And how do you act american? How is she trying to be bad? I just don't understand where you're coming from.

    • @Yooncelebtarot
      @Yooncelebtarot Před 7 lety +17

      StrawberryBlond21 I'm American...and I am also Asian American...and the fact that she's trying to be some type of crusader of sorts for Asian women is really off putting for me. Especially since she's speaking like she knows what it's like to be Asian in America. Like I've said, she's only lived here for like a minute. I've been her fan for years and I know for a fact that she speaks differently in her English interviews than she does in her Korean interviews. Maybe she's trying to cater to different crowds but it's really off putting for me to see her embrace this different personality as if she's this hardcore, bad ass chick. I don't know her personally so maybe this is a side of her that we've never seen before outside the stage but... it does not really make me want to support her because I feel like she's trying too hard to be someone she's not. 1. Stop talking for others, just focus on the music (you are singer not some cultural icon messiah for Asians) 2. stop making generalizations because it sounds ignorant. 3. Don't pretend like you aren't making any waves because you choose to "do things right." That's not true. You aren't making waves because it's hard to make it in America. Just admit it and it makes you look ten times more genuine. I am also under this impression that she feels like only this type of persona will help her make it in America which is not true at all. I don't know how else to explain it. Just my opinion.

    • @Yooncelebtarot
      @Yooncelebtarot Před 7 lety +4

      Well, CL was cutesy at one point in her life (not cutesy as in Kpop girl cutesy but personality cutesy, go watch her old interviews and 2ne1 TV). But I am not holding that to her because people evolve and she's adopted the baddest female image from her solo debut. She likes it and feels like it represents her the best and that is cool...but I guess I am speaking more or less about how she's coming off from her interviews. She tries too hard to be hardcore...and this comes from how she describes her struggles about breaking the US market and trying to break stereotypes. It's not a good look for her. Look at how people ripped on Iggy Izalea. I just don't want CL to be another Iggy. Just focus on music CL.
