  • How about this for horsemanship? Jockey Tom Greatrex readies himself for the ride aboard Blue Haze in a bumper race at Worcester in May 2016, and then this happens...
    Ready to leave the parade ring and about to head out on course, Blue Haze decides to go all bucking bronco - and make the unsuspecting rider have to earn his fee! Despite the odds, conditional jockey Tom Greatrex rides the storm and manages to stay in the plate - and even dismount and head back to the stables with the horse, who was declared a non-runner and didn't take part in the race. Fair play, Tom!

    I’m just going to say this but if u watch the full video which is about 2 mins long, there was a loud boom/bang and that is what caused the horse to freak out. This was no one’s fault what to ever, wasn’t the horses, the handler, or the jockey. The jockey only did what he that he could do in that split second which was to pull back on the horse. I do agree that he could have pulled the horse in a circle, but sometimes us as humans, we only do one thing, and with the jockey he was thinking he had to get the horse to stop no matter what, yes he could have pulled the horse in a circle instead of pulling head on it’s mouth, but Yes it was “somewhat Horsemanship” but the many thing is that no one was hurt and that the horse was ok. Sometimes you have to do thing in order to keep yourself and other from get hurt and that includes the horse horse as well. It would have been horrible if the rider had gotten bucked off and badly hurt, and now you have a lose horse on the track with a lead road on, that if he stepped on it, it could cause him to trip and fall and maybe even break his leg. I think the jockey was looking at the WHOLE picture, for his safety and the horses

      You cant ride a circle with horse broncing in a straight line The long reins and steady pull were exactly the right thing to do. Keeping that head UP at any cost with a steady pull on long rein was just right. Easy to be an armchair critic. Have you ever even been on a racing thoroughbred?? The power and agility and fitness level are way beyond any lesson pony or backyard horse.

A young horse had me off once when he plunged with his back arched UP strangely to avoid cantering round a corner. I BRUISED MY TAILBONE FROM THAT! I was going to say the same thing. He has an amazing balance up there, but going straight forward is always easier than staying on a turning horse. No stirrups and just a little piece of leather between him and the horse, it would've been very unsafe for him to try and pull him in a circle, especially if the horse had tried to buck during the turn. A loose horse is extremely dangerous for himself and others, so not falling off is very important - he chose the right moment to jump off.

    Had a similar situation happen once on a Gypsy Vanner. He was a lesson horse that my trainer said was "bombproof" 30 mins prior. He spooked because it was very windy outside that day even though I was in the indoor arena. He pretty much turned into a bucking bronco and even though it probably only lasted around 25 seconds, it felt like minutes. I remember just thinking as it happened, I really don't feel like getting thrown off today, and somehow I managed to ride it out. What I took away from that experience is no horse is "bombproof" and don't panic.

    Amazing seat. With bareback riding, you wrap your lower legs around the horse's rib cage and have your upper leg and pelvis moving with the seat. In a buck and bolt situation, you lean back, keep the horse's head up and ride it out. When the horse slows, you get off and calm the horse, then when it is calm, get back on and ride home. You DON'T STAY ON when it slows, you reward this behaviour (slowing);by getting off. Besides which, if you stay on, horse is probably going to go into round two in a few seconds. Get off in the lull, regain control of your mount, and go from there. He did everything right and prevented a very bad situation. BTW, I break horses as a hobby and have been riding off track racehorses since I was 15 years old and I'm now 45. Before you reply some bullshit comment, you need to think what it might be like to ride a horse that's not a perfect little Pony Club Schoolmaster.

      Ellie Colangelo yes, of course. But rip out the horse's mouth is okay, especially when it's 2 years old, in a loud and full of people arena.
      Sorry, but the more you pull on the rein, the more the horse is going to spook. I know it is a racehorse, but a horse will never ever galop as fast as they do in races, and if his "rider" knew how to stay on the horse, well he better let go of the reins a bit.
      The only solution in this kind of moment is : fall down to let the horse calm down itself, which here, was not a good idea, OR the rider let go off the reins, sit properly, and try to stay calm, reassuring the horse. And it worked many times for me, and for a lot of people. It's the same with a little foal.

      @elliecolangelo826 Před 4 lety +3

      L'Univers de ma Pensée most racehorses don’t even start racing until they’re 3, a horse will not spook bc you are pulling on the reins, horses gallop quickly in their fields all the time and racehorses are bred to run, just as a horse bred for jumping will jump. the rider had no stirrups on a horse that is most likely tall and narrow and is currently taking off and bucking, he’s sitting up and back and keeping the head up and the horse actually calms down and stops running, he’s not seesawing the reins or trying to flip the horse.

Just watch videos with other race horses take off. They get bloody fast. And when they ghet headless they have no regards for stuff that is in theyre way. People includet. If a horse thakes off you have to catch it imediatly and not let the rains go. If you let them go that is a recepy for desaster.

    once on the course, an outrider pony may've been helpful...oh wait, that's right, European horses never misbehave or get spooked, except when they do, and there's no one mounted out there to help the jockeys get them safely stopped, or catch them if loose...just this morning 2 races at Strasbourg were delayed - one for a loose horse who ran around for several minutes, and was actually brought back, and made to race anyway - finishing almost last (shocking!), and another whose saddle slipped back till it was like a rodeo flank strap, poor thing was bucking to high heaven, with only a gate attendant to try to control him...horse even fell down, hard, onto his side during this, before they were able to get him stopped (and it seemed, for a bit, as if he wouldn't be scratched, either, as the saddle was reapplied, much to the commentator's horror)
    lead & outrider ponies (& their riders) save lives, they should be as mandatory as the ambulances that follow the field

    I dont know why there are so many comments saying that he shouldn’t have pulled the reins; let me ask you something: if you didn’t have a proper saddle and no stirrups with a wild horse (clearly too young and hasn’t been trained well or at all for that matter) how would you calm the horse and held on as much as this man did? This horse was far beyond calming or stopping, he made his mind and when a situation like that happens it’s almost impossible to do what this man did.
    Such a good job, only a few people can do this.

Eventually they will stop. Also getting off at the end there no, he should have stayed on until the horse calmed down more. I get why he did it but should have stayed on a little longer. Dismounting too soon can teach a horse to buck to get the rider off. But yes good seat.

It comes with the territory so don't bitch at me. Trust me I've been in this guys situation and it was now fun. In my case my friends green horse spooked took off, torn the reins from my heads and went straight into a fence. The same horse did the same thing to another girl months before I rode and she went over the fence and shattered her collar bone. I busted a vertebra in my low back coming off bare back into a wood post ended up under my horse. Looking back now to my novice days I can clearly see what I could have done to prevent accidents like that. I have emergency stops on my horses because I let my neighbors and kids ride them. I don't want to be blamed for them getting seriously hurt and not even just that. I would feel insanely guilty if someone got hurt riding my horses. All I'm saying is that he could have done things a little differently to have a better out come. That's all I'm saying.

I have to bring her head up until she gets tired of her antics, usually only around 10 seconds of running off. Whips or kicking will get you thrown faster than anything, so I just sit there and talk to her until I convince her that my way is more comfortable. Then bring her back up to the arena.
