In order for this video to be better appreciated you needed to have problem spark plugs: problems that you can show either a damaged spark plug, or a weak spark plug, compared to a good spark plug,
Spark plugs either work or don't work. No such thing as "weak" plugs. You either test whether they are working with this tester, or you do a visual check and see if the ends are corroded or rusted. If any of these are true, time to replace. End of story.
@@blackkeymaestro You are wrong. Most spark plugs are resistive. They make them resistive to limit the electrical noise that gets radiated causing interference with the radio and other circuits. They will have a resistance of 5K or less measured through the center electrode. When this resistance breaks down over time and becomes more than 5K, the spark produced becomes weaker as there is less current through the spark. If a spark plug is suspected of being weak, you should remove it, clean the electrode and do a resistance check with a multimeter. If resistance is more than 5K, the plug should be replaced. If the plug is of the non-resistive type, this is not an issue as they will last much longer. Incidentally, they also make resistive and non-resistive wires which suffer the same faults and can be tested with a multimeter as well. You should use either resistive plugs or resistive wires; never both resistive or non-resistive. I prefer to use resistive plugs with non-resistive wires as the wires will have a longer longevity.
A plug that fires outside the engine is not a reliable working test. Inside the cylinder it has to be able to withstand immense pressures, varying temperatures of heat produced by the engine, burn off oil and other contaminants to function correctly. A plug that gives spark not subjected to any resistance may fail under engine working conditions.
I support! Until the very end of the video, I hoped that the author would show how this tester works on broken and faulty spark plugs!
I agree with others. Waste of my time!
I had to smile at the disclaimer in the beginning of the video every gear head I know including myself has experienced that jolt from a Plug or Coil wire ! I have a Uncle that grew up in rural Louisianna and he told me a story about a trick they played on one of the local Bullies that if he was to Urinate on the Spark plug of a running lawn mower it would shut the engine off he said that kid rolled around for a half an hour grabbing his Junk and yelling how bad it hurt the others thought it was hysterical
LOL :)
Better if you put one faulty spark plug to better understand the plug tester response
I would have, if I had one :)
@@screwsnutsandbolts you could intentionnally open the era betwin the + and the mass of the plug to make it not able to do any spark and so "create" a broken sparkplug
Khushal Khan lmao the light is the response! If the “TEST LIGHT” doesn’t light the spark plug is trash!
Prefer Not To Say it is not as simple as it seems, sometimes it may have a weak spark and the light still flashes which tells you there is spark but not enough to ignite the mixture.
@@BeastmodeBeats It's not like you could expect anything else. The light indicates a complete circuit. Light, good. No light, bad. Simple.
This is a good test I believe for a no-start car to see if there’s power going to cylinders as one of the diagnostic steps .
Handy tool !
Wow such a satisfying pop when you took them out

Love that tool. Brought 4 of them.
Yeah I “Brought” one home to after I bought one.

Using same test light all my 8 cylinders had spark, but all 8 spark plugs were shot, gap should have been 40 & they range from 55 - 62 causing po300
Doesn't this just show whether you have good spark to the plug?
It does seem more like an ignition coil tester than sparkplug tester. I don't see how it's supposed to test anything other than signal from the coil, upstream from the sparkplug.
@@khameeleeon this is helpful for vq35
@@khameeleeon if the plug is not actually sparking it won't complete the circuit, thus the tester wont flash
It could also be that the wire is bad and not completing the circuit so this only tells u if you’re getting a spark cause if it doesn’t light it could be a bad wire or spark plug!!!
This test allows you to address both the ignition coil and the spark plugs. So if your coil pack needs to be replaced you’ll know based on no light from the test light. Power goes from the battery, to the ECM, to the Distributor Cap, to the spark plugs which distributes power to different responsibilities of power: compression, ignition coil and ignition relay power, airflow used to pump fuel into the throttle body to send a required amount of fuel to the engine, or fuel pump pressure & power. If too much fuel is sent to the engine your check engine light will come on. It’s referred to as fuel trim and it’s the reason a lot of cars have a check engine light because improperly distributed voltage is distributed to the fuel pump which means too much fuel is pumped into the throttle body.
I do get light , its dim, I think my coil is bad or the battery is week, the
bulb doesn't glow fully like this one.
Using a regular test light should work as well I’m assuming. It just won’t snap into place with the coil pack wire.
@@capitalr8649 The voltage is way higher on a spark plug than a normal test light (that's what the coils do), if you're talking about kind designed to test general electrical stuff in a car. You're likely to fry your light if you're trying this with one of those.
Well explained
How would the figure of the check engine light be, I can't locate it on the dashboard
Will this work on the distributor to?
Good bro thnks...👍

But how can I get this test light in a deep sparkplug socket 🤨

Thanks for testin g the first one but the rest were a waste of everyone's time.
True
mine did'nt work, there is a coil with bulb inside,it was'nt making contact so i just connected fixed
I wonder what the actual timing of the neon ignition delay is. Of course not a problem.
Ppppppppp
I would recommend having a spark plug that didn't work so the video feels more complete to viewers. Also, at least editing the time wasted between testing each spark plug. Good tutorial otherwise.
Thanks for the tip!
Could there be problem with plug but it's still grounding and giving a cercuit?
That's possible
I got one of these, I think it won't really tell you if the problem is from the plug, coil, distributor or battery until you do further checks.
Yeah it’s misleading!!! It only tells you if the plug is getting spark as commanded by the ecu
where do i buy this tool
I thought this just tested spark to the plug. I believe if you placed one end of the tester on a bolt that it would spark just the same if the coil and wires are good. I have one of these as well but never considered it a spark plug tester. Perhaps I am in error?
Thanks for the tip, this was certainly sold as a spark plug tester :)
Does the indicator light change intensity in respect to a weak plug or coil?
I don't think so. I think it only indicates if there's a spark or not
It does ...weak light means something else is wrong with the ignition system
Won’t a regular test light work the same way? Clip one end to the spark plug and the long metal probe goes inside the spark plug wire.
Yeah it's pretty much the same thing
Woooww!!!
N'oubliez pas de démonter la fiche de l'injecteur d'essence au cylindre testé
does this also test the ignition coil?
It will only show if the spark is getting from the coil to the plug
Is that tool usable with 2 stroke small petrol tool engines?
Yeah it should be
My tester lights up for all 8 plugs, but only 5 coils change the engine sound when disconnected, one at a time. All coils, plugs and wires are new, but idle is a little rough.
My car does the exact same thing. Were you ever able to figure out the problem ? I would appreciate knowing. Thanks
@@timothyfrost8807 Yes. For the 3 coils that I unplugged, where there was no change in engine sound, I removed the fuel injectors for those 3. I found a CZcams video on how to test the fuel injectors using a battery, and I found that the 3 fuel injectors were dead. I replaced them and now the engine idles beautifully.
@@ernestgunraj9916 send The link. Of the video
if the light not working ok that means electrical problem??? or the spark problem??or the the engine some ptoblem maybe valves????
It means there is a problem somewhere in the ignition system, most likely a bad spark plug or ignition coil
I’m glad he didn’t use a V-12 to make this video.
are there any V-24/48 or even 96?
Dumb question but I'm asking anyway. Do you think If I buy six of those things and put all six on the motor, will it still work?
lol it probably would work !
@@screwsnutsandbolts I once had problems with a jeep misfireing and wanted to record it while I turned on the ignition to the jeep. I wanted visiual also to see firing order.
Hi, Do you know how to test the bulb for this tester. I got one of this but I got no ohm reading and the bulb is rated 220v. Can you help?
I don't know, sorry.
The bulb is a neon bulb and requires high voltage to work. To test the tester hook it up to a spark plug that you know works. You can't measure ohms or continuity with a multi-meter to check this tester.
I don't think you can get the right ohm readings on bulbs, unless they're on
and that probably doesn't work to well either, probably messes up testers.
@@bikersoncall Thanks for the reply. I still cannot get an ohm reading. But I do get to test it on main voltage and it works. Problem solved.
Does this tell anything about the coil output also ?
It basically just confirms that you're getting a regular spark to the plug
Will this tool work on a truck that will not start? My truck just keeps turning and turning
It should at least help to verify if the spark is getting to the plugs and eliminate that as a cause for the non-starting
can all plugs be tested at once with 4 test lights
I don't see why not :)

Can you use these with a coil over plug style ignition
I'm not sure if it would clip into the end of the coil. If it did, it probably would work. I think..
I am actually doing this now on COP and you just plug it to the end of the boot where is the spring showing, just make sure it has contact between each other in case the side of the tester rod is lose inside the boot and of course make sure to keep distance enough between metal parts and naked conductors.
I think you can test it while spark plug outside the engine too with the tool.
Kennedy Wong Yeah, u connect the test light to a negative battery terminal and remove the sparkplug from the socket which is time consuming, because then you have to get a torque wrench and tighten it back to its torque specification, this is the fastest way!
@@BeastmodeBeats which part of the tester connects to the negative of the battery the outside of the female plug?
will this work with Ignition coil packs?
It's possible but it can be awkward, depending on the vehicle. Check this video: czcams.com/video/i5I_8QIM8iY/video.html
and if it does not flash : what is the problem would be ? the spark plug cable or the spark plug itself ??? i mean how to know if the problem is the cable or the spark plug ?
It could be the spark plug, ignition lead or ignition coil
@@screwsnutsandbolts oh it is a greatful thing that you answered in person. but I still can not know how to know which part is the problem : and if it work like that without detecting the problem , it eans we can use our ears without need to this tool ...
@@worldcollections2839 If you can hear electricity flowing through a wire then you have an electrical diagnosing gift from God. The rest of us mere mortals use tools like this to help us see what we otherwise could not see. The real tool a mechanic uses to determine what part to replace is their brain. Diagnostic tools and procedures just aid in using the brain to find the problem and part to replace.
P.S. This tool is dirt cheap, there's no reason to not have one if you're someone who fixes gas motors and is good at doing so.
I think it would be more correct to say that the spark going to the sparkplug is OK, not that the spark plugs are OK. Just my 1cent.
zing zing Exactly! There is spark
this is correct and saved me making the same comment. this does not test the spark plug but the fire to the plug.
Seriously, I just bought one of these, I bought it to check my coil,
lol didn't really consider checking the plugs, even though it
says spark plug checker, I don't think it checks the spark plugs. lol
👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks !
This particular test only checks for spark going to the plugs. Perhaps you could test your plugs by hooking the tester to them after they’ve been removed.
This tester is in series with the plug - it won't light unless the plug is sparking which completes the electrical path. If the plug is not sparking, there won't be a path for the neon bulb either.
@@TechnoTinker can this be a test of bad wire too? Still learning how this works.
@@hernani1271 Sure. A bad wire or coil could fail to deliver good spark, but this sometimes depends on other factors. Some wires might perform OK under mild stress but fail at higher RPMs. If one cylinder is testing bad, you can swap the wire with a known good wire and see if the problems follows the wire or the plug. You can also swap identical coil packs to rule those out. Don't try anything you don't understand, and don't take to much advice from a random non-mechanic (me) commenting on CZcams.
@@TechnoTinker If a plug becomes shorted, it will not spark, but it will still flash the bulb. A plug can become shorted when the porcelain cracks or if there is a conductive substance running the length of the porcelain; effectively shorting out the gap.
Are you displaying if the spark plug itself is not sparking then there will be no spark in the see-through glass 🤔
Yes, it shows if there's a spark occuring. If not, the problem could be with the spark plug, HT lead or ignition coil.
What kind of car is this???
It's a 2000 Volkswagen Golf Mark 4
This is maddening. Could you not show us the one that is not working perfectly?
does the tester determines if coil is bad and not the spark plug
It's really just to confirm that the voltage is getting to the spark plugs.
@@screwsnutsandbolts thanks , so if no sparks on the tester , either sparkplug is bad or the coil
@@zealot8220 Yes, or possibly the spark plug lead, if there is one
@@screwsnutsandbolts I'd rather stick with an ohms lead check, although you'd figure the spark light in the tester would be weaker if the spark voltage was low.

I'm not sure
@@screwsnutsandbolts I wouldn't thing a mtimeter would be much use for a live test as most meters only go up to 500-1000v AC and the spark is around 16kVAC.. An ohms check of the ignition lead and spark is a better use for fault finding using a multimeter.

This does not test the spark plugs. I just tests the stark TO the plugs.
You’re right it doesn’t test the plug itself cause if that was the case where people say if it doesn’t light up it’s because the circuit wasn’t completed from the spark plug but that could also be the case if there wasn’t any spark coming from the coil/wire!!!!

It's a bit boring watcing you test all four plugs. I liked the first plug: this was my favourite. Plug 2 was ok but 3 and four i got a sense of déjà vu. BUT the reason I sat through the whole 6 minutes was to see what happens with a faulty plug. But no.

you are testing for spark not testing that the plug is good. big difference.
also you say this also works for motorcycles and while that may be true if you rig it up right. it is a pain to use on some because their spark plug does not have a tip that fits this but is much smaller or what is known as a stud type. the tester in the video is designed to use on a large terminal but can be rigged up for the smaller one. it just does not work as well with those.
here is a video showing the different terminal types.

This tests the plug lead not the plug... it only give indication of a spark going to the plug not one at the tip of the plug where you need it....
nah if the spark wouldn t occur, there would be no - meaning it can't light up . so by doing this, you re just testing if the spark occur and it s actually a better way than to test the plug than when it s out cause you can see under pressure how the spark really performs
@@albapor1 your wrong
ok
This tests the entire secondary electrical path. If the current from the coil doesn't make it to ground through the spark plug then this tester will not light. The only way for this tester to light and a spark not occur at the spark plug is the plug has to be shorted to ground either through a smashed electrode that gives 0 (zero) plug gap or a carbon trace.
@@killer2600 I think you will find that your wrong... You can still use this tester with a faulty spark plug that has a lower resistance than what it sould have and the light will still come on because there is still a complete electrical circuit... which gives a FALSE reading. All this does is given a continuity reading from the lead to the tip of the plug. Hence my first post "this only checks the lead" correctly not the plug.
I learned nothing but what I already knew how a plug sparks when they are good and how to check them. You did the same thing over and over and here I’m waiting and thinking ok he is gona show a bad plug and what the tester looks like when a plug is bad.Guess you got people suckers into watching the whole video
