"hardy" plant... *me watching this video because I'm killing mine*
Oh no! What's up with yours?
Lol me! But I watched this after repotting so it’s my fault :(
"Samesies! Wahhh!!"
Same here
Same. Mine leaves keep getting dry.
I've had my parlor palm since I was a kid. So its 40+ years old. It is now just one stalk and at least 10 feet tall! Lucky I have high ceilings in my house. It just sprouted seeds which is always cool. My "life plant" I call it. :)
Woah that's so cool!
I think mine just sprouted seeds. It looks like little yellow beads right?
@@shealeysolutions yes
I’m very interested in buying the plant now. How is it when it come to pest?
Wow amazing
My cat thinks it’s his personal salad bar
I was wondering this!
My parents have one that's over 40yrs old and it's up the ceiling!☺️ I have managed to propagate cuttings from it, from the base of the mother plant has worked the best in my experience. Great video!
Had mine for a little longer then a year and a half and it has gotten huge! It won't stop growing, even in the winter months . It's taking over 😂
What did do? How do you get it to grow like that?
Feed me, Seymour.
I love these plants. I accidentally left one on my balcony during a summer downpour, it was literally floating in its pot when I found it but after an emergency repotting it bounced back so quickly. Definitely the hardiest houseplant I have!
Yes! They can be super hardy! :) Glad to hear yours bounced back well
dude, thank you so much for showing what it looks like without the lights on it. 💗🥰
thank you my mum just bought me one of these had no idea what to do for it. Like your hair too
I'm getting one of these for sure, they are so pretty.
Thank you for the video
I have 2 of these mainly cuz I thought one was dying but i saved it. Lol. I always liked these palms. 🌿
This was super helpful! I think I'll definitely give a Parlor Palm a go! Thank you 💕
Found this really informative will definitely be using tips to revive my parlour palm
Thank you u have one of these plants. Had it for 4 yrs. I love it
enjoying your videos, idk if its exactly a parlor palm that i have but i think its pretty similar. this video was in depth and covered all the issues so thank you a lot for making it!
Aww thank you! If you want, send me a pic on insta and I can try to ID it for you
Good luck palm beautiful name
Parlour palm
Beautiful sharing
Good description
i got 2 small ones for £2 in morrisons earlier, one for me and one for my sister. thanks for this video!
Thank you! My cat goes crazy for my Parlour Palm - more than any other plant in my house. I have a wire 'cage' over it to keep him off. I've read that cats love this plant. Not sure why. Glad to know it's not toxic to them.
thanks for another video that answers all the questions I had
I just got one the other day, this video was helpful thank you!
Ooh very exciting! No problem! Glad to help :)
I got one for my birthday and I am surprised it’s alive The woman who sold it to me who owns a plant shop by the way said to put it in direct sunlight almost every day and I was wondering why the leaves were burning up and crisping up really hard-core. Thank you so much this video has helped me and I’m so glad that my parlour palm hasn’t suffered too much damage and he is salvageable
I work at a plant store, these are my #1 recommendation for a pet friendly plant!!!! Hard to find an easy pet friendly plant sometimes 😭
Thank you so much! I bought one today because it was on sale and spoke to me. I've got it in front of our huge window but it's near the vent so I'll move it.
Very thorough 👍🏾
This plant is so simple but yet I love it! It’s so tropical looking and I love the vibes. Mine is pretty small still but doing so good! I bought it small❤
Excellent video - now I know not to keep it right by the window where it gets quite hot & sunny in the afternoon. No wonder it was struggling. And I’m thrilled I could probably keep it on a table in the middle of a room with a window. Thank you!!
Good info..thanks a lot
Glad you enjoyed :)
thx so much now I can take good care of my new plant mr. Green
Good one, thank you
Great video! Also you can propagate these via root division 😊
Hi!!! I just got my Bamboo or parlour palm 5 days ago my grandma gave me one so i was searching of how to care for it and i found this vid! Thank u so much! U explain good! I SUBSCRIBED!
Aww thank you so much! Welcome to the good growing fam! I hope you enjoy your new parlour palm! They're great plants!
@@GoodGrowing yes they’re so cute i love them!
Thank you❤❤❤❤
I can vouch for them being pet safe. Both of my cats have chewed my parlour palm and thankfully both cats are ok 🙈
I am babysitting my sisters cat and I have caught her munching on my plant also. I was glad t find out it wasn't going to hurt her.
MY cats seem to love them too! I've had to put a wired cage around it now to save it's chewed leaves.
But is the plant okay?!? 🤣🤣
Yes, the plant is fine 👍🏾
My cats ate mine to death.. Glad I bought two 😬 and now I know better than to leave it around for them...
Thanks for the video! I want a palm, just not sure which kind I want yet. Yours is very pretty and healthy.
Yes I'd totally suggest a parlour palm if you want a smaller desk/shelf sized one! They're pretty easy going!
I have bought a new one and i was so stressed i might ruin it. But when i watched this video, it really helped me take care of it! Thanks!
I was getting ready to ask why mine get crispy brown leaves, and then you answered it lol
Despite living in an extremely high-humidity city, I guess my HVAC filters out so much of the moisture that it's affecting the plant. I'll put it on the counter when I shower every now and then.
Mine flowered many times ,rn it has 2 flower stems that I am waiting for to flower :'). I never colected the seeds or did anything with it ,plant propagated itself ,seeds fell into the pot and they grow all by themselves xd. Now when I am more into plants I will help it propagate but just so you know that is pretty easy to care for and even flower. I have mine now for about 10+years and it was my first house plant ,I got it as a gift. You can forget about it and it will be just fine. The easiest plant to care for in my opinion :)
My plant got seeds as well. I haven't try to grow them but next time I will. I love this plant.
What do the flowers look like? I just remember the seeds was green then turned yellow and dropped all over the floor. I cut the new seeds off a few weeks ago because the cat I am babysitting was eating them and my plant.
@@pattirousan403 you can google how they look like :). I'm pretty bad at describing xd
Thank you, usually I do Google stuff like that, was thinking about the weather and must have developed brain fog.
They will flower, mine did for a while. When you talk about low light it might be best to measure the low light with foot candles to give people a better idea of the low light that is being talked about.
thank you! this was really helpful. i definitely need to increase the humidity for my neanthe bella palm, i think. i have a humidifier that i’m going to start using again! :D
So glad I could help :)
I would like to know about Easter/ Christmas cactus
You’re funny , subscribed hehe
What do you do when some of them looks like they're dying and how do you tell if you're giving it too much water or not enough
Hiiii.
That was really great, thanks 🫂🤍
But I have a question: what if we water it a lot?
After watching your video I understand that I water it a lot 🥲
What can I do?!
I think mine has been getting too much direct light and not enough humidity as I live in a fairly dry place. Should I trim off the brown crispy leaves? Add fertiliser???
Mine is almost 3 years old, and for the last year thanks to moving apts now is in front of a south west window, used to face east in the last place, never had an issue or any pests from it :)
It has beautiful names
Many names
Just bought one of these 2 weeks ago! Some of my bottom leaves turned yellow and then noticed the yellow leaves are now turning brown so confused why since I water once a week🤷🏼♂️ it also has a few brown tips so maybe it’s the lack of humidity (dry spring) - would misting a parlour Palm help them with lack of humidity? Should I feed it liquid fertilizer? I’m not sure if the store fertilized it before I bought it so didn’t want to over fertilize
So unfortunately yellowing leaves will always die off eventually. They may be a sign of overwatering. Do you check the soil before watering or stick to a schedule?
Misting could help with the humidity or you could put it on a pebble tray.
As for fertiliser, liquid would be fine as long as it's diluted to the right amount
My Chamaedorea Elegance Palm tree I planted in potted 2 weeks ago I noticed leaves are fading. It is like the leaves are a fade green with with faded white mixed in. It is not a fungus as it looks like a natural color in leaves. I have it under grow light but not real bright. I keep check if needs watering so don't know what is causing it or what to do. Any suggestions would be appreciated
Thank you
Mom had one and made it flower (accidentaly) by watering it with water that dropped from the laundry, so it had laundry sftener in it, and her plant loved it....
Purchased my first indoor house plant ever, parlour palm. How do I prune it? Do I need to prune it? Do I just cut From The Bottom
I just bought one yesterday. It's my first plant so I'm a total plant newbie. It's in a pot with drainage holes and I did the same thing as you and popped it in a nicer looking pot. So here's my dumb newbie question.. inside a sleeve (saw this term googling) how does it drain? Do I need to tip the water out sometimes or does it just evaporate quickly enough? Or do I need to take the plant out of the sleeve and water it then put it back once it's drained?
What does it mean when the leaves have white spots /: I don’t think they’re mealy bugs because they don’t come off when I wipe them which makes me think they might be lime spots? Help :(
What r the little seed like things that grow from them like leaves? R those seeds can I plant them? This is the first time I've had them grow from my plant I've had it for 5 years it's a very tolerant plant very easy to maintain! U was just wondering about those seed looking thing growing!
I noticed mine had some brown leaves. But the soil has moisture. Any ideas?
Hi emma do u have a video on how I can save my areca palm? The tips are brown and some leafs have small white spots on them, im new to plants
My indoor parlor palm plant has flowered 😅 it’s been producing seeds left and right, I had no idea it was seeds until I figured it out a week later.
It’s still producing plenty of them, idk what to do lmfao
haha tbh I'm not sure either but it's pretty awesome that you were able to get it to flower/seed!
Hi Emma, can you please recommend a potting mix? Reviews on Amazon for so many of them say they’re bug infested so I’m struggling. Also, what ratios do you use of amendments? I have perlite, coco coir and worm castings. Thanks so much ❤️
I typically mix my own out of 60% coco coir, 20% perlite, and 20% worm castings. Sometimes I switch up the ratios a bit depending on the needs of the plant I am potting!
Good Growing thank you so much for replying, that’s roughly what I went with. Thanks!
I've not seen any videos about how to take care of an older one of these. They are certainly slow growing in low light. My great aunt has had one growing in her house for at least 15 years and probably longer. The window for that room faces north into a tree covered alley. The tops of some fronds have just about reached the ceiling, but the plant looks healthy and green. Its a trip how static they look and feel in that state. I felt the leaves and thought they were fake plants at first, but then noticed that they had a mild case of spider mites!
I read the nurseries often plant many seedlings in one pot, and they thin out over time. In her pot, I remember seeing that there were 3 stalks. This is certainly a plant that will be nice to watch over a long period of time.
Wow that sounds amazing! I hope mine can live to be that old and big!
@@GoodGrowing I hope so too! They're so beautiful :) This year I started taking care of one that's at most 6 years old that a family member gave to me, so I'm still learning about them. I don't know when I should rotate them so the leaves will grow in normal directions. x) A sudden obsession with palms motivated me to buy some baby ones I saw at store so I can start watching how they grow from that stage as well :3
Hi, great video!! My leaves seems fine but my plant has started dropping to one side. I have started giving it more light but it hasn’t perked up yet. I don’t water it often but mist it everyday. I only have it a few weeks. Any suggestions?
The only time I've experienced this is when my plant was thirsty. They do like to stay a bit moist so maybe pick up the watering. I'd say water when the soil is dry 50-75% of the way down. Good luck!
I am 12 and just got one of these today thank you, this help so much! Do you have to fertilise then
Also could I leave this in a window
mine has leaves that get pale, dark and crispy. what is that about? i appreciate any input
Mine is in a similar spot light but getting brown tips these days. Does anyone know why?
I have a pa!m plant too... Planning on placing it into a palm leaf woven basket instead of it's store bought plastic one. What's yours in?
I’m having a B.t.ch of a time with this plant 😢. Leaves turn brown and crispy 😮.
But, will keep at it and appreciate your input ‼️
What does your moisture meter read when you water it? My moister meter guide says to water if it is at or below 4 but the soil still feels damp. Also the plant card it came with said to not let the soil dry out between waterings?
I tend to water if its anywhere in the 'DRY' section and that usually feels pretty dry too. I find the cards plants come with are tough to follow as it'll depend on so many different things like the light its getting, the temperature, and the humidity
I'm sure you can separate them. The one you have looks like it is more than one plant so you could separate them when repotting.
Thanks for your advice! I was hoping my palm would be happy in a low light corner… 🪴 😊
my palm has been on a decline all winter :// im wondering if the pot is too big, i repotted last spring and it hasnt seemed to like it , but im scared to repot to a smaller pot incase i disturb it 😭😭😭
My parlour plant has leaves drying. What could be the reason for that
Question about pot size - do they like space or to be in a smaller pot per their size. How do they tolerate being (or do they like to be) somewhat root bound? Mine seems... lacking... and after seeing the one you have here I'm wondering if mine is in too big of a pot.
It’s hard to say without seeing but I found my pot to be good size for the plant. Given I have parted with this plant since making the video so long run I can’t say
My parlor palm has seemed to droop to one side and I notice some browning at the base of the stem. I am trying to control the watering and think I kept in too much light for a while. What should I do?
It might have been trying to grow towards the light. Slight browning at the base of the stem can be normal as long as it's not super dark and mushy (that means rot)
Thanks for sharing. Is it ok to water a parlour palm once a month?
Depending on the conditions yours is in, it's possible that it will need water that infrequently, yes. But I'd say better to go off of soil wetness than time as changes in weather/time of year can affect how frequently it needs watering
Can you make a video on how to propagate a dying parlour palm? I want to salvage mine and continue growing it in just water
My plant is falling over. The leaves are green and look healthy but it’s not standing anymore any tips?
what about seed germination?, my chamaedorea gave a lot seeds, but they are so tiny!!
Mine has burnt and dried tips on a lot of the leaves. Overwatering?
I think low humidity is the issue
does too much sun causes them to have dry brown leaves?
💚
I had to repot my baby bella two times because I couldn’t get the soil to drain and the root ball has been staying dripping wet 😭
My final potting is right back in a nursery pot and she seems happy. She is growing and looks happy. Does that mean I hopefully didn’t hurt her?? My last repot was about 2 days ago. How soon would I see signs of shock? Instinct told me to be super gentle with the roots. I put in new dry soil hoping it would absorb some of the water from the root ball soil (which I left intact). However, I did lightly water it after the repotting was done 🤷🏻♀️
You've done everything I would have done. Keep an eye on her in the next week or 2 but I'm sure she'll be very glad to be back in a comfy place with good soil!
I don't have this plant, I killed my last palm plant while studying for the bar exam... Have you encountered the scindapsus trebuii dark form? I had to order one from Indonesia on Etsy...
I've only seen pictures of the treubii dark form and I reallllllly want one!
Ive left mine outside during winter in Australia they have brown tips. And a possum chewed them down to little stubs they’re bouncing back and have a ton of new growth.
sometimes they just need a chop (or a chomp 😂 ) back!
@@GoodGrowing haha
I've had one of these for about two years now, when I got it, it was 4 inches tall and came in a pot mixed with different plants, I separated them, and put the palm in its own pot, now it's about 6 inches. I'm starting to believe that I planted it in too big of a pot. could doing that stunt its growth?
It possibly could if your plant is spending too much energy in growing roots to fill in the bigger space
mine got too much sun and the leaves are yellowing. I brought it inside and now researching how to bring it back to lush green like it was
@goodgrowing Do you know if I can grow parlor palm in leca or pon?
I don't see why not! I'm sure they'd love the moisture & humidity
I have propagated my ferns I started with two small ones about five years ago and now have 6
I just bought one last year I leave my by my big window but the leaf keep turning brown now
I have a palm plant inside and it has seed pod branches. should they be cut off or left on the plant
It's up to you and whether you like the look of them. Do note that the plant is probably giving energy to them. So if you don't like how they look cut them off.
😍🌱
is spraying your plants with a spray bottle every once and a while a good idea? i just got into houseplants and i have a parlor palm and a peace lily
As long as it's a fine mist with very small droplets it can be helpful to prevent dust and boost humidity a little bit
@@GoodGrowing ok thank you so much !
Can't remember ....Great tip 🤔
Did you ever try growing majesty palms? I had no success with those whatsoever. I now have a parlor palm and so far it's doing great.
What about keeping it in my conservatory Thamks
Mine died. On my second now and leaves are dying again. 🤨 moved it to the bathroom, no direct light from the window there, and its a lot warmer in there.
I’m new how often do u water it
Yeah, I have two parlor palms. One is about five foot tall, at 15 years old, the other is about three ft tall at about ten years old. My problem is they need pruned. The old one is so big, it’s like a giant bush. Do I trim the underside, lower branches, or trim the top. I guess it’s not that they are tall, it’s that they have a huge bouquet, for a lack of descriptive words. I need to slim them down. Help? Advice?
hmm that's a tough one! I'd say probs trim from the bottom. Find the stems that are sticking out the most, that you want to remove and cut them as close to the soil as possible. good luck!
Hi Emma, isit the same for areca palm on watering?
Yes, pretty much. But I've found the areca palm much more picky than the parlour palm!
Mine has started to pale and the tips going brown, and it was so healthy for like a year. I split it in Jan and the other is doing fab. I'm so confused 😂😭
It's possible that it's still recovering from the shock of the split. They really don't like their roots being disturbed
@@GoodGrowing thank you for the response. Hopefully it'll bounce back after time! It's the only plant outside of succulents that I've managed to keep thriving 😅
I was given a parlour palm (or that's what i was told it was) by a friend who split her huge one down into several plants. its got two fronds, one dies back as another grows. it looks quite sad at the moment, as you said, probably from the root disturbance. its currently in my kitchen, Im now trying to figure out how to create humidity...thanks for a great video! :)
The kitchen is a great place for humidity as it'll raise while you're cooking. Hopefully in time it will recover from the shock and start growing fuller again!
@@GoodGrowing fingers crossed! Thanks 😁
It's not really slow growing plant, I buyed one a little bit earlyer Crhismas, and now I separate/repot it two for parts (The leaves and the root too), both are live and grow relativly fast... xD xD xD
Amazing that yours is growing so well! It defo depends on the conditions you have for it. Mine is in a fairly dark spot so it grows slower 🤷♀️
On the soil moisture what's the best number on the dry side to water?
I pretty much water if it's anywhere in the 'DRY' range
I think my parlor palm is flowering! One of them has like a green toothpick coming out between a leave.
So what happened now?
@@ggzzmm it is flowering for sure!
@@weatherlicious it must be beautiful !
